My hair's mission in life is to lock. It's also dense, coarse with very high shrinkage. All my products must have slip. FYI, I'm a PJ who needs variety. These are my best detanglers in alphabetical order:
DIY Herbs with mucilage
I use the teas on dry hair to prepoo or to refresh an old style. The powders are added to rinse out products (cowashes, conditioners, Ayurvedic treatments, etc.)
Burdock root tea
Chammomile tea (apple scent)
Hibiscus powder (sweet floral scent)
Irish moss tea & powder
Marshmallow root tea & powder
Marshmallow leaf tea
Nettle tea
Slippery elm powder
Spiked Ginger Lily/Kapur Kachri powder (incense scent)
Fenugreek tea from seeds or powder (maple syrup scent)
When do you all use a detangler?? I've been trying to think of how to add one to my regimen...
Do you use it before washing?
That's the only way I can think of using one. I usually just detangle in the shower while cowashing with piles of conditioner.

I usually use a "detangler" prior to washing. For example, today I used water and Olive oil to finger detangle my hair.
Water, avc and aloe mix
I detangle after washing. I tend to wash my hair all piled on my head like they do in the shampoo commercials. Then I use a huge glob of suave naturals and finger detangle upside down from root to tip. Detangling before hand is a waste of time for me. Takes me 20-30 minutes adding product on dry, dirty hair and 5 maybe 6 minutes to detangle on freshly washed hair. When do you all use a detangler?? They're not detanglers per-se but they are wonderful at detangling my knots - NG Mango and Coconut and NG Marshmallow Root and Slippery Elm deep Conditioners.
What does the Paul Mitchell smell like?Paul Mitchell The Detangler mixed with 100% coconut oil.
Works very well on matted, natural hair. I've also used Hello Hydration and Totally Twisted with coconut oil and they work but The Detangler is best.
Just Natural Skincare Detangler - all natural detangler. The only reason I stopped using it is because of the cost + it can only be bought online and I was in search of something that did just as well on the ground, which leads me to
Ion Leave In Conditioner - best one I found on the ground. Gives me pretty much the same results as JNS (detangling, slip, shine) but JNS gave me shine no matter what conditioner I used prior to. The Ion Leave In gives me shine but if the conditioner I'm using prior to it dulls my hair a bit it won't be as blingy.
Honorable mentions:
- Shea Moisture Kids Spray Detangler - gave great slip but didn't add any shine to my hair
- Aveeno Leave In Treatment - same as Shea Moisture
- Serums - they have been very helpful in the preventing tangles. Glad I started using them but wish I did sooner... The ones I've used (Chi Silk Infusion, GVP Silk Remedy, Biosilk) have all given softness and slip to my hair.
The original SM Purification Masque on dry hair was really good. Apply, then sift through tangles.
