Hands Down, The Best Detangler. Spill The Details

I'm extremely basic, but.... Mane and Tail Detangler. lol
I love that stuff. It washes out very easily with sulfate free shampoos/conditioner (since the silicones used in it are water soluble) and it has extracts that are great for hair. Plus, it's cheap!

And when I want to prepoo and detangle at the same time, I make Naptural85's prepoo/detangling mix: A cheapie condish, some ACV, some aloe vera juice and some Crisco (vegetable oil).

ETA: I wear a lot of long term protective styles and wash and gos/twist-outs when my hair is out.
I have also noticed that my hair tangles up really badly while washing if I don't detangle before hand, and my hair doesn't much like being detangled while soaking wet either lol.
So due to that host of factors, I always detangle, then wash.

I don't use a conventional product known as a "detangler" but the following styler and DC has done wonders in preventing me from putting in a leave in or detangler to detangle:

Kj Naturals Jamaican Jelly
I use it as a styler, but this stuff helps make detangling my dry hair a breeze! I detangle on dry hair when I comb my hair out between washes, which is usually twice a week now. I comb out my hair to prep for my weekly braid outs (summer months only). and this stuff just makes my comb slide through my hair significantly easier.

SiameseTwists Sweet Potatoe Pie
Wish I knew about this sooner, but this stuff has done wonders for helping save my strands when I detangle after I wash. I use it as a DC. Significantly less strands in my comb and my hair feels amazingly strong.

It's a 10, or the Sally's knock off Miracle 7.

Awesome detangler but not a great moisturizer is Mane N Tail detangler. I stopped using this for the other two above for their conditioning properties.

Deep conditioning with Obliphica. Which is my new love.

Cowashing in general.

I use the It's a 10 and Miracle 7 the exact same way....after cleansing my hair, wrap it up in a terry turban towel. Let the towel soak up the water for about 5 minutes. Then I spray either of the two in my hand (about a quarter size amount) and then distribute into my hair all over. I like light, bouncy hair, so I don't use much. I then detangle with damp hair using a wide tooth shower comb. Tangles fall apart.

With the Mane n Tail, I do nearly the same routine. Cleanse, dry in a terry towel. After taking the towel off, I spray this liquid liberally all over my hair (not in my hands). Then I wait for about 2 minutes before combing out. This is the one that doesn't have good moisturizing properties, so I'll add about a dime-sized amount of some other leave-in after combing out the tangles. This one is probably the most effective in detangling for my hair...

When I cowash, I use Eden Bodyworks. After cleansing, I dry with the terry towel for a few minutes. I can choose to use a leave-in or not. My hair is still easy to detangle if I choose no leave-in at all. Mostly I use a tiny amount of Schwartzkopf sealed ends AFTER I've detangled. Works great.

Just Natural Skincare Detangler - all natural detangler. The only reason I stopped using it is because of the cost + it can only be bought online and I was in search of something that did just as well on the ground, which leads me to

Ion Leave In Conditioner - best one I found on the ground. Gives me pretty much the same results as JNS (detangling, slip, shine) but JNS gave me shine no matter what conditioner I used prior to. The Ion Leave In gives me shine but if the conditioner I'm using prior to it dulls my hair a bit it won't be as blingy.

Honorable mentions:

- Shea Moisture Kids Spray Detangler - gave great slip but didn't add any shine to my hair
- Aveeno Leave In Treatment - same as Shea Moisture
- Serums - they have been very helpful in the preventing tangles. Glad I started using them but wish I did sooner... The ones I've used (Chi Silk Infusion, GVP Silk Remedy, Biosilk) have all given softness and slip to my hair.
okay ladies, you all have to spill the deal on how you use it, and how often. Dont just drop the goods and leave.

WE WANT the details

I use all of mine on wet hair post wash/condition. The serums I use while I'm still in the shower (put a dime/nickel size amount in my hands, spread it all over my hands and run it through my hair, concentrating on the ends) and then I spray the detangler on before I blow dry. I do this every time I wash/condition.

When I need to do some serious detangling, these are the products I reach for:

- SSI Avocado Conditioner (used on wet or dry hair; beneficial because of its superior detangling ability)
- Silicon Mix Bambu, Pearl or regular (used on dry hair; highly beneficial due to their ability to detangle the rattiest of nests and unravel dreadiest of knots
- Eden Cowash (used on wet hair; beneficial because its phenomenal slip allows me to detangle and cleanse in one shot without stripping my hair)
- NG DCs (used on wet or damp hair; provides a ridiculous amount of slip in addition to moisture and silky softness)
- EVCO + ST Mango Dip/Afrotastic (used on dry hair as a pre-poo; must be used sparingly because it will cause protein overload; beneficial because it detangles like a dream and gives me the silkiest, softest, most moisturized hair ever)

I only detangle once a week during wash day either during a pre-poo or with my DC. It all depends upon what what my hair needs and what I plan to use to meet those needs, e.g., if it requires a kick of protein, pre-poo and detangle with one of the Silicon Mix DCs on dry hair; if it's moisture, do it while DCing.

- Mane n Tail Detangler (for real bad tangles). It performs best if I let it sit on my hair for a few minutes before starting my detangling session.

- Shea Moisture for Kids (damp hair). Simply spray and detangle.

- Cantu Detangler for Kids (dry or damp hair). It softens my hair which makes it easy to detangle and work with. I use this one the most.

- Paul Mitchell the Original Detangler (in shower). This conditioner offers amazing slip and I am able to fully detangle in the shower with it.

I detangle before washing as my prepoo. I:

1. Section my hair into 6-8 sections
2. Spray my hair with water until it is damp
3. Squeeze a palmful of cheapie conditioner (current favorites are Daily Defense Tender Apple [dc], Tresseme Naturals [dc], and Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle) into my hand and top with about half as much oil (right now it's a mix of coconut, JBCO, olive, avocado, and safflower) and mix
4. Apply the mixture to my hair section and finger detangle, then wide tooth comb, then finer tooth comb, then sometimes Denman

So, water+cheapie con+oil is my favorite detangler. :spinning:

The original SM Purification Masque on dry hair was really good. Apply, then sift through tangles.

Nubian Heritage Hemp Oil and Tamanu was my HG on dry hair a while back. Also left me with soft post wash hair. Apply and sift through tangles.

As much as I was unhappy with SSI Peach it did have good slip for detangling wet hair.

All of my deep conditioners usually have "enough" slip to detangle in the shower.

Post wash, APB Hair lotion, though it has too much Shea butter for me. The Cherry Kukui is good too.

My hair's mission in life is to lock. It's also dense, coarse with very high shrinkage. All my products must have slip. FYI, I'm a PJ who needs variety. These are my best detanglers in alphabetical order:

When KoilsbyNature Shealoe leave in conditioner was in a jar, it was the bidness for detangling, dry/wet/damp hair. I havent revisiting since she changed bottles. I heard on the PJ streets the formula changed

I use Soultanicals Knot Sauce on dry or damp hair. Sometimes I break out the detangling brush if its bad but mostly use my fingers.

I'm also a fan of oil topped with any deep conditioner. I let it marinate and then finger detangle.

Qhemet Biologics CTDG is a favorite of mine to dry detangle with.

Wow, KBN Leave In was in a jar? I used the bottle a while back when I first went natural, I think the slip was okay, I can't remember.

@Dayjoy

DDTA!? You still have some of this!? I remember when this was all the rave on here. It was good though. I liked the other one too. Too bad they discontinued it.
Yes! When I first joined I mentioned that I wanted to try this htf con and a very nice member offered to send me some. When the box arrived there were 15 or so bottles in there!!! That's when I knew this place was special. She would only let me pay for shipping. I used it off and on but now I have a sure way to use it and have been going through it quicker now than before.

My Natures Advantage Honey & almond conditioner does a great job on my hair...but quite honestly I rinse or cowash every other or every 3rd day and she never really gets tangled to the point that we ain't friends!

Now DD's hair is a whole 'nother animal. She needs a proper detangler and i've experimented with everything from Johnson & Johnson (WACK!) to KKKT (OK) to our current fave Aunt Jackies and lots of others in between. We like Aunt Jackies because the product is not greasy and it truly does make the hair slippy enough for a stress free detangling session. This product is also an amazing leave-in conditioner and pairs well with my Eco gel for a wash n go with a little bit more hang than usual.
