I am debating on getting a steamer for moisture, but not sure if it is worth the expense. Is there a significant difference in the two, or are they about the same? Any suggestion is helpful. Thanks in advance!

I would like to know also. I do overnight deep conditioning every week and i've always wondered if a steamer would be better..

FOR ME - Steamer wins hands down.

I don't like anything wet on my head when I'm sleeping. Causes too many upper respiratory problems. Plus DH and I don't like the crunching sound. And I don't like having to worry about something coming off my head and messing up my pillows.

I tried overnight conditioning several times and it was no better than steaming for 30 minutes. Steaming allows me to quickly DC and move on to finishing up my hair and going to bed.

Overnight conditioning is in-convenient for me. And I believe my hair is better moisturized from steaming.

Overnight DC has its place for some, but not for me.

I'm with Pompous_Blue on this one. To a degree this is a matter of preference. If you don't mind doing the overnight DC then the steamer may not be that impressive to you. For me doing something in 20 minutes and being done with it is more preferrable. I don't want to incur the time to doing the overnight DC and then having to do my hair in the morning. Too much. For others not incurring the cost of the steamer may be more important to them.

If you do a true comparison of 20 minutes condition with steamer and 20 minutes DCing then the steamer will often work much better. If you do 20 minutes condition with steamer vs. hours of DCing then they may be a match.

The only thing that I am aware of that the steamer claims that can't be achieved with the overnight DC is that the steam helps purify the scalp. (Not their exact words but something along those lines).

There are plenty of people who DC overnight, enjoy and are committed to it. Most of it really is a preference and a lifestyle choice.

I don't steam with a steamer but I can tell you that I see better results with hot towels and a plastic cap under a dryer than I do with overnight conditioning.

On a scale of one to ten I'd give overnight a 6 and "steam" a 10. I would think an actual steamer would take my treatments to a 12.
