Her: If a client's hair is too porous, you should cut it. The context we were discussing hair porosity was during the perm chemical service (as in curly perm not hair straightening relaxers like Mizani for eg.) If the client's hair is so porous (especially if the hair is dyed) that it won't hold a curl well, then the best thing to do is to cut it off because it is damaged.
Me: Yet, when we talked about heat trained/stretched/overprocessed hair that won't hold a curl, no one mentioned cutting the hair under those circumstances. My understanding is that the hair's elasticity determines its ability to hold a curl and not how porous the hair is.

I asked ' if alkaline solutions raise the cuticle, then what does lemon or vinegar do?' Her response was that they dont' do anything to the hair. I pushed, 'they must have some effect (or is it affect?) on the cuticle. I know some ladies who [caugh] LHCF [cough] put vinegar on their hair to seal their cuticles?' Someone yelled out that they use vinegar to clean chicken lol. Turn the page and low and behold acidic solutions contract the cuticle. The author wrote it, not me....Wow!

Let me give her a little credit and research her statement. Can overly porous hair be repaired? [end research question]

I've often considered going to cosmetology school and I know for a FACT that I would be the most reckless student ever if I go:look:

Here in my University my professors love my inquitisitve questioning challenging nature I tell professors when they're wrong and they appreciate it. Somehow I don't expect the same reaction in cosmetology school:giggle:

hahaha!!! every time your teacher hears your voice she's gonna see

You better stop fighting with your teacher, she really will fail you. Those teachers are set in their ways. You ain't gonna change her mind about anything. You'll just make her mad, then she'll fail you.:yep:

Lol....curious for selfish reasons, what does she have to say about hair that has low porosity? Should we cut too:giggle:?

Wow, my teacher when I went said if you didn't have any neutralizer on hand grab some vinegar for your neutralizer. That was 17 years ago from a Very old teacher though. Ms. George, ahhhhh she reminds me of Madea.

You have to find your own answers these people learn from this Milady book and just teach the text book. Nothing more sometimes.

:giggle: at u showing up the teacher.....

I don't think overly porous hair can be repaired, but I do believe it can be managed, with things like ACV, roux PC, etc.....

I will say that a stylist I admire said that what school you go to doesn't matter...just learn what they are teaching you to pass and invest in training after you get your license.

Nothing is worth arguing with some folks because old practices will always be taught but it's up to individual stylists to take on the extra education afterwards.

Well said!

Overly porous hair CAN be repaired...we do it all the time here. I for one had hair that dried too quickly, and did not hold moisture at all. I am treating my hair with Roux PC (among other things) and saw a difference the very 1st time I used it! My hair continues to get better with each wash...your teacher don't know naaaaan :)

Self Styled,
Yes, she says to cut it. The jury's still out on whether porous hair can be repaired.

JJamiah,
I'm impressed with the out-the-box thinking :)

I'm not too worried about her b/c I've been getting high marks on my exams and she ain't giving me my state exam. Also, I have days where I 'massage' her and other days I really wanna know why she talkin' out her rectum?!

Don't worry 4s, I went through the same thing.....I learned quick fast to keep my mouth shut - take what best practice info I could and learn from them also what not to do.

One of the instructors relaxes every 4 weeks! Now gratefully she did not advocate this for other students, but my surprise was visible.
