Well I'm one of those that say cut then grow. My reason is it's just hair and it'll grow back and for me I'd rather it grow back and it's healthly then to continue to let it grow knowing my ends will split even more. I wasn't always like this, but I had a bad hair experience and it just changed the way I think when it comes to cutting hair.:)

OH! Okay...so you got me going off on a tangent for nothing, and you should know how I can be by now. Typing 100+wpm has its advantages and disadvantages. I say definitely don't cut if you are trying to grow long hair and have no damage. You are just setting back your progress for no reason. You gotta take deep cleansing breaths through the "I need a new style" phase and focus on your goals.";)

:lachen: I can just see you shakin' a finger at me...LOL!:lachen:

Your right I do need to focus. I have decided on implementing a new rule...the "SEVEN day wait to do it" rule. If after 7 days I still feel the same, i will probably do it. I get in that "I need a new style, I'm bored" phase and it usually passes within a couple of days.

I confess...I will look for any excuse to cut my hair :( I think I need a 12 step program or something. :perplexed

I'm gonna TRY to grow then cut. But don't be surprised to find a thread like this every now and then :perplexed :lachen:

That makes sense. That's what I want too and like vivacious I'm waiting until BSL or a little past before I cut it.

I'm glad it made sense to somebody! I'm gonna do like you and wait ;)

Thanks for all your input and encouragement ladies :)

I grew mine out past brastrap, and now I'm cutting it to maintain it and thicken it. My ends aren't damaged...they're just thinner than my texlaxed hair because they're bone straight. I have about 2 more inches to go so by the end of the year, all of those ends will be gone, but I'll still have hair that's just past BSL.

Thanks DI, this is exactly what I am gonna do...except I don't think I want hair past BSL...or do I? :spinning:

I like it. It's an insurance policy for wearing my hair down. Even if I need to trim an inch, I'll still be past BSL...that's comforting. :yep:

ITA with your whole post. That's exactly the way that I am doing my hair. Except at waistlength. I will maintain it there for awhile and get trims.

Well, I would have to say that if your hair is damaged, then it would be best to cut then grow. That way you save the hair that isn't yet damaged. But in my case, I am going to grow out my hair, then get a blunt cut. I've been wanting to cut my hair for awhile, but I have some short pieces in my hair that I think it would be best to grow out so that I can have it really even. My hair isn't damaged, just thin, and I've come to the conclusion that I just can't have long hair and expect it to look good.. :-(

My ends are driving me mad, I think I need a cut but I don't wanna. I want to grow a bit more and then I'll cut some. Grow some, then cut some. I've worked too hard to grow it to chop it off.

I am going through the same thing. I dust my ends often and they still look thin to me. I plan on growing my hair to at least MBL and I am going to do a blunt cut right at BSL.

If you are wearing protective styles 85% of the time anyway (as many of us do), then i say grow then dust/cut. Ure ends wont get any worse if they are being moisturized and protected daily.

In terms of an "uneven" look, without split-ends..... its also best to wait and cut, because as ure hair grows out, you'd be surprised at how ure ends seem to look thicker and fuller as layers and shorter pieces grow and catch up. I just think its best to see the finished product before u go cutting all willy nilly. :)

Anyway, if you cut now........ by the time u reach ure goal, that pretty "blunt" look may have grown out naturally anyway, and u may feel inclined to trim again. I'd wait and trim all at once..... nothing crazy, maybe like an inch at the most. Based on ure avatar pic, i dont think you need anything major.

Good luck!

When I was growing out my hair when Texturized I did a big cut and then grew it out. The cut made all the difference in my hair and it really took off from there. Now that I'm transitioning I grow and then cut.

I thought this was going to be about transitioning/BCing. Anywho, I'd cut now cause once I hit BSL (no time soon) I'm throwing away all scissors. Seriously I'd runaway just at the mention of nipping my hard earned tresses. I'd be like this :sekret: whenever it came time for a trim. But that's just me. Get it over with now.

It seems like you're more interested in a different layered look from what you've got now more so than retaining or gaining length. Are you planning on cutting yourself or going to the stylist? I had beautiful long layers once & went to get them trimmed & she gave me short layers:eek:...Yes, I still had length in the back, but the flow was gone. Anyway, I voted grow a little more then trim to be sure you get the long layers instead of shorter short layers. JMHO

I say grow then cut. More growing than cutting of course! I used to trim at least 4 times a year, but I'm thing about reducing it to maybe 2x a year. We'll see. My plan is to grow my hair past my goal. That way, by the time I cut, I'll be cutting to my desired length instead of taking away from it.

I am in the cut then Grow Group. I think that you may want to cut and then grow your hair because
1-like another poster daid once you reach bra strap your aren;t going to wnat to cut. and
2-You don't wnat you hair to look scraggy on the way there.

This is true! However, when I grow and cut, I tend to dust and search & destroy regularly. I only trim after touch-ups, this way Im able to keep some what nice ends and length at the same time! :yep:

I cut my hair a year ago and I now I'm just growing it out. I need to trim the ends only because its uneven, but since I have no split ends I'll probably wait a year.

Cut then grow. No point of growing your hair long if you know you are going to just have to cut off a certain amount of length anyway. Might as well get it out of the way instead of teasing yourself.

I say grow then cut. When I was trying to get to APL, I waited until my hair was slightly past it then I got a trim to even up the ends. Now I'm heading to BSL and I'm doing the same thing when that time comes. The only reason I would cut in between is if there is an actual need for it, eg., due to split ends, etc which I rarely get. I agree with Charmtreese when she said that she only trim after (for me some but not all) touch-ups, this way I'm able to keep my ends nice, neat and even and have length at the same time:yep: - Like having my cake and eating it too:lick:.

Ooooh.......GoingNatural I think you voted by mistake then, because you voted for grow then cut in the polls:perplexed. I know, I know, I actually read the details of the polls:grin:.

I say cut it now.....Cause once you get to BSL......you're not going to want to cut it. Cutting it now....will alleviate worrying about it later.
co sign and also is you dont cut and head to bs your bottom layer will be there and the rest of your hair wont be

I voted grow then cut. My hair grows at wonky speeds so I'm waiting until it's all full SL/little past SL for a blunt cut.

i swear i wanna cut so bad im mbl but my dead scraggly ends are so anorexic and see-through its ashame im jus afraid of my hair being above bsl again ive been there for years and i dont think im trimming till the thick part of my hair reaches lower mbl/high waistlength
