Tips:
  • Moisturize and seal.
  • Trim only when absolutely necessary (ex. frayed; thinning ends, stagnant hair length, excessive shedding).
  • Protective styles (styles with ends tucked) help retain length.
  • Deep conditioning is your hairs bestfriend.
  • Heat without heat protectant is a no-no.
  • Length retention is more important than growth.
  • Tight ponytails and buns cause tension on hair strands resulting breakage.
  • Detangle gently. If you're making a face while detangling then you're handling your strands too rough.
  • If it doesn't have SLIP, throw it away.
  • Stay hydrated and take your vitamins!!
  • Treat your hair with love and care; it will AMAZE you.

Current Length: Four (4) inches passed waist length
Goal Length: Hair touching, falling to the middle of my buttocks. (A length I have NEVER ever seen before.)

Plan to reach goal length:
Regimen:
  • Braided buns and baggie.
  • Shea butter and Vaseline on ends.
  • Using homemade protein concoction, based on the Green Tea Keratin Reconstructive Formula, EVERY wash day.
  • Never using a brush during the week and only styling with my hands in the morning to reduct breakage.
  • Using Aphogee every eight (8) Weeks.
  • During more blowouts and MICRO Trims (thanks @keranikki !)
  • Using Snoop's Clay Mix to wash my hair instead of shampoo.
  • Consistently covering my head at night when I go to sleep.
Protective Styles:
  • Braid as pictured but put into a baggie.
  • Keep hair covered at night when I sleep.

  • Glycerine, Aloe Vera, Oil and Essential Oil Pre-poo

My goal length is simply to keep the hair on my head. :lol:
Plan to reach goal length:
To hopefully keep doing my mini braids. Some times it's really hard to get motivated.
Regimen:
It's super simple but I don't do anything with any kind of schedule. It's simply put braids in, moisturize with TGIN Green Tea, and seal with some grease. Wash when I have the energy, condition, and air dry/towel dry. Take braids out(when I'm tired of looking at them. Usually not pass a month or two), run around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to figure out what to do with my hair. Give up, put braids back in. 1xyearly relaxer, 1xyearly silk press. No combs, only to part.
Protective Styles:
Usually just mini braids. I'm too cheap/tired/whatever other emotion I'm feeling to do anything else.
Staple Products:Shampoo and conditioners are subject to change, but TGIN Green Tea Leave in and Blue Dax, are usually the staples, sometimes I use Aphogee Green Tea and Keratin Leave in, or another grease to seal.

My goal for 2024 is to make it to full BSL.

Plan to reach goal length:
Keeping a simple routine with protective styles. Will add oiling my scalp on a regular basis to my routine and will try out whipped shea butter as well.

Regimen:
I keep my routine super simple because I don't have the energy for a ton of steps. Also I am my own worst enemy when it comes to retaining any length so in order to grow my hair out I need to keep my hands out of it.

- Keep my hair in long-term protective style - two-strand twists
- Wash hair once a week or every other week
- Moisturize with mist of water, a moisturizing cream, and sealing oil
- Redo and detangle twists to avoid them locking
- Get a trim 1-2 times a year

Protective Styles:
Two-strand twists, buns, knotless braids, and maybe wigs.

Staple Products:
Alodia haircare products. I pretty much use the entire line.

I want to join, but I have no idea what I’m going to do with my hair in 2024. I feel like I need a good shaping haircut, but those are not conducive to retaining length. Or I could just bun/ponytail/puff for 6 months and see how much length I can gain before I get my hair shaped.

Not happy with where my hair is at the moment and I'm ready to grow it long!

Current Length: Most is MBL? Haven't stretched with heat in ages so will confirm with pics next week.

- Blow dry every wash day.
- Take a break from twists, especially small and medium ones.
- Use different parts during wash day to minimize breakage and split ends.
- Oil and massage my edges and nape twice a break to generate blood flow.
- Wash hair every 2 weeks since I am sweating more often and it might help with my acne.

Regimen: When my hair is in protective styles, alternate co-wash, and shampoo every three weeks; in between washes, moisturize every other day and baby the ends. After taking down the protective styles, I will clarify, do a protein treatment, wash, deep condition, blow dry, and retwist.

Natural? I put in an amino acid smoothing treatment about 3 weeks ago. I will continue to use it every 8 to 12 weeks.

Goal Length:
For the year 2024, I want to end it with having BSL after all trims are said and done.

Plan to reach goal length:
For the past few years, I have been predominantly following the guidance of kinky curly hair specialist especially that of BGC and affiliates. Although their advice helped me achieve nice looking hair when worn curly, I found several flaws within their practices when it came to length retention and scientific evidence. So this year, Im giving the general advice from cosmetic chemist who specialize in hair a try. I hope to eventually be able to combine the best of both worlds when it comes to knowledge surrounding hair care practice and style. Basically, this means I want to be able to wear my hair down and coiffed while still being able to retain length by using science from hair care experts.

The Plan:
-The first phase of my plan is to shift my hair philosophy. I will be treating the hair that grows beyond the epidermis of my scalp as a non-living fiber or textile that is chemically dynamic.
-Use a shower water filter and change out filters on time to reduce mineral deposits on hair
-Use hair products that have the optimal pH range of 4.5 to 5.5. This includes shampoo, conditioner and styling products.
-Use conditioning products with slip such as those having silicone as a way to prevent breakage and protect the outer cuticle layer
-Use bond building products with backed up scientific evidence as a way to reinforce strength to the inner cortex layer. Remember these products often do not have any conditioning agent. So if hair feels hard ,it is because these products are often not necessarily meant to work on the cuticle layer of hair.
-Use coconut oil or sandwich method on hair before washing to prevent hygral fatigue
-Use gentle detangling tools and take my time doing my hair.
-Ban the use of Felicia Leatherwood brush for the year
-Focus on scalp health by washing scalp more often and actually using dandruff products
-Use only microfiber towels to dry hair
-Use lower heat on tools along side heat protectants


Regimen: Shampoo, condition and then style all while being gentle.
Straight Hair
-I want to try my hand at round brushing but somehow reduce mechanical damage. Im not sure if that is possible, but doing it can potentially be a "healthier" option for heat styling.

-It seems that thermal styling tools like the flat iron are more of a culprit to hair than a blowdryer. Unlike pressing combs that heat the hair up from the outside in and mainly damage the outer cuticle layers, flat irons heat the hair from the inside out. There is a greater chance of the heat denaturing the protein structure within the cortex and permanently breaking disulfide bonds rather than damaging the cuticle. So making sure my hair is fully dry before I flat iron is highly important. The denaturing process starts at 375F and becomes fully denatured past 450F when hair is dry. Unfortunately when hair has excessive moisture in it, the denaturing process can start as low as 320F. So by reducing moisture and heat, I can better mitigate loosening of my curls aka heat damage.

-I will maintain hair either using something like a sleepy tie or do pin curls. Then cover my hair up with a silk or satin scarf. I currently can not find a doobie that doesn't leave dents in my hairline much like bonnets. Otherwise, the doobie would be a decent choice over or under a scarf. I will also lubricated my ends with a serum or oil.

Wash n Go
-The emphasis will be on using heavy weight gels that can keep my curls elongated while my hair dries. I might start using leave-ins. It has nothing to do with trying to moisturize or hydrate my hair. I just need more lubrication and heavier conditioning properties. I will also use a buff or scarf to pineapple my hair at night. This keeps the volume and prevents squishing of curls.

-I might revisit styling foams again. I spoke with Miche and they suggested that i should apply it on wetter hair instead of putting a leave-in underneath. If this does not remedy the lack of slip, then i will for sure only use mousse with a leave-in. If doing this will allow me to style at night or take less than 30 mins in the morning, I would prefer this to spending an entire day waiting for my hair to dry.

Wash n Plait
-This is for ultimate lazy days. I will either put my hair in one plait or two. I will be slicking my hair down using children's products or mousse. Gel stay wet too long and leave my hair too hard.


Protective Styles: I will be using hair toys (e.g. claw clip or flexi 8) to keep to keep my ends tucked away and to stop my hair from rubbing against things. My goal is to protect myself from common hair interactions with rough collars, jewelry, purse straps, seat belts and the likes. My hair will be wrapped up in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet anytime I'm in the house.

Staple Products:
I'm going to be honest. I have so many products to use up. I'll be heavily rotating products. I can give you an idea of what will be used.

Straight hair: leave-in or blowdry spray/cream with heat protectant, split end mender (protects against split ends and leaves ends looking smoother) and serum or cream for flat ironing.

Wash and go: heavy gel with slip and hold or leave-in and styling foam combo

Wash n Plait: detangling leave-in and a soft hold styling product to slick hair down with.
Leave-in: Luster's Kid Easy Comb Detangling creme or Mielle Pom and Honey Leave-in
Slick Back: Just For Me Curl Peace Ponytail and Edge Control Cream or Just for Me Nutrition Moisturizing Styling Smoothie
Prevent Fly Away in Plait: Just for Me Curl Peace Grip Glaze or Luster's Pink Kids Curl Creation Custard.

Cleaner eating and more veggies and protein + drinking water + vitamins (iron and D) + exercise
Incorporate more scalp, neck, and back massages + better sleep

Regimen:
Pre-poo with babassu oil
Weekly clay washes + ayurvedic powders
LCO with water/herbal tea + DIY leave in conditioner + tallow

Protective Styles:
Two strand twists. I plan on wearing mini twists for 3-4 months at least twice this year.

I took my plaits out yesterday to prep my hair for washing. I hadn't seen my hair in a while and got excited and snapped pics! I'm so happy that my hair has legit now passed the length that it was in my avatar because I think that was my goal for this year.

I'll try to take better starting pictures the next time I wash my hair.

I'm changing my routine up and will try to stretch my wash days to every 2 weeks. Why? Because I don't have the time LOL!!! 3 hours minimum once a week is a chunk of time I could use getting homework done. I plan on putting my hair up in a protective style during week 2. I'm hoping that the lower manipulation will help me retain even better!

You'll probably see better retention because you'll also be more intentional with the little time that you do have for your hair.

People seem to downplay the time factor in hair care. If you don't have time for 50-11 steps, that's perfectly ok. You'll find a way to get things done. I'm at the point where I try to do everything into as few steps as possible. I can't be bothered. :drunk:

Regimen:
Prepoo: Bhringraj oil and aloe juice
Shampoo: Ayurvedic shampoo bar w/ neem
DC: weekly with heating cap using shea butter and Queen Helene Super Conditioner
Protein every 6 weeks,
LOC daily (when wearing a hair bun)
spraying with aloe juice and using the crown and glory method when in braids

Yes!! My routine is so simple. It's the time under the dryer that take forever!

I set my hair on flexirods this wash day, and I'm like why do I bother LOL. The curls don't last and figuring out how to set my hair at night is much more complicated.

Flat ironing my hair is so much easier all around. It takes half the time as rollersetting with better results and easier upkeep. If I'm down to doing my hair every 2 weeks, I may just do that.
