Good hair means curls and waves. Bad hair means you look like a slave, but I think at the turn of the century, it's time for us to redefine who we be.

For the record, I just wanted to say that most Indian women shave their heads for religious purposes at temples. The temples sell the hair and the women don't get anything in exchange. I would imagine that most of them don't know that their hair has/will become famous on BET, MTV, Hollywood, your hood, etc

This is why we have so many woman still walking around w hot A@# messes on their head because they don't fall in to the "GOOD HAIR " group. It just goes to show u we don't need other races to tear us down we got our OWN .....TEXTURE IS BEAUTUIFUL. Embrace your differences, love what God made you . I don't think God would make ugly hair, just differerent hair . How boring would it be if we all had wist-length bone straight hair. Don't let nobody tell u anything about u is bad....

I realize that there are a number of companies who collect hair from temples and what not for free. But, that's only part of the business. There's a whole other section that preys on women and gives them paltry sums for the hair that they shave off in order to feed their families. And you never know which hair you're getting.
I personally think it's nasty (and a little bit deranged) that a person would dislike their own hair so much that they'd rather wear some random chick's who could have lice and whatever else. But hey, folks gotta get that good hair however they can.

^^^^^ I agree... I think we hurt OURSELVES when we develop "labels" and so-called "standards" of what OUR hair SHOULD look like. Why is it that only Types 1-3 can be deemed "good hair" and everything else is relegated to the "bad" category. All hair is GOOD, it's just a matter of how you care and maintain it. If you don't do it the LHCF, it does NOT mean that it's hair that's "bad" or going "bad", it just means that person uses their methods and we use ours.

ITA. This is a major deal. All hair is good but doesn't look it until one finds a way to make it healthy. African American hair is complex due to the different types and even similar types can be different from each other.

I don't consider my hair good or bad, but just somewhat healthy hair, although some days are more of a challenge than others.
Now a lot of people here will say "Oh, there's no such thing as good hair", etc.. or "I'd never say that". Well there are people here who say that they have one hair type when it's another. I don't go by hair typing...too confusing to me, but I know that there are a lot of people here who are proud of their weaves, perms, etc. There aren't a lot in my area, but when I do come across a black hair magazine, I don't see naturals...what does that tell you about what most people think?

They're probably talking about the silky 3c's. If you don't have that silky shine, it doesn't matter if you have curls and coils, your hair is still deemed nappy and bad.
the term "good hair" itself irks me. Why oh why do people still use this term in 2009??? Just a rhetorical question

In my oppinion good hair is thick and healthy. That is easy to manipulate. Long enough to get into a bun if I'm not in the mood to style it. Good hair is versatile. Afro one day, swanging the next. I haven't figured out how to get my hair to do this yet...but I'm working on it.

People should be careful about throwing that word around, it is actually a pretty harsh insult.

Oh my bad, I should have made myself clear.
I meant a silky 3c...though 3c's are usually still "curly" as opposed to "coily" so they still count as long as they have large enough curls.
