Girl don't do it!

The Gold n' Hot was MURDERING my hair! My old stylist made me throw it in the trash and get a ceramic.

For those who say no relaxer + permanent dye...I must have some strong hair! I had a beautiful red color on my relaxed hair last year and I never had any breakage problems. My stylist used the CHI haircolor line on my hair and all the styling products and my hair stayed beautiful.

Trying to tie up a scarf in the back too tightly. It will break your nape all up. The same for the front!!

HoneyDew where you been all of my life!! It was only a couple of months ago that I came to this realization! After years of thinking I was doing what was right for my head. As seen in my fotki pics, the bald spot in the back of my head, I notice is where the knot lies.

I was just getting ready to post this! Although I'm not relaxed, I had been trying to color my hair myself and it was always hit or miss. I have a lot of gray and I was tired of the black. So, I researched and went to color specialist. She is on the Farouk/CHI International team. My color came out beautifully! So, to all the ladies that have had bad experiences with color, I would suggest that you go to someone who specializes in color and not someone who buys their color products from the beauty supply store.....

I did this throughout highschool and never had any breakage either. It just made my already dry hair dryer....then again I just learned how to moisturize properly.

Girl, dont:

-Keep a weave in (sewn or glued) for more than 6 weeks. 4 if you still want hair on your head.

-Try to highlight your black hair with African Pride Honey Blonde Kit (after you have dyed it all brown and relaxed the week before! Yes I did this in college several times!!)

-Don't skip the heat protectant when using any kind of heat on your hair

-As a matter of fact, don't use heat. And if you do, only sparingly.

-Stretch your relaxer for at least 8 weeks- your hair will thank you.

-Don't get a silky weave with beady beads sticking out from your sides and nape. Dont get a silky ponytail with type 2+ hair.

I totally feel you! My stylist used the CHI line faithfully and my hair stayed fly. I used to have chicks stop me in the mall asking who did my hair...

If you were previously told that your hair is to soft and or fine for a relaxer believe it. GIRL DON'T DO IT!!! No matter how much you want one.

Do not put off trimming your ends when they need it:whip: . That's just asking for breakage. I did this for years and wondered why my hair didn't get any longer.

Oh dang!! How could I have forgotten the Gold n' Hot flat iron?!? I used to see the smoke coming off my hair and would think, yeah that's it!!...if it aint smokin it aint straightening

Everybody is definitely on point.

Pokahontas--I don't use heat anymore but when I did I sho had a $12.99 iron.
Thick-n-long and someone else mentioned not mixing relaxed hair with jheri curl hair--Thanks for the warning. I sho was thinking...

Treasure, you right about them fonkey phony ponies. I had a drawstring that I used to pull so tight and though my scalp was sore many times I kept doing it for years, until I finally got enough sense to stop that. Don't do it!

Another member mentioned about combing dry hair--used to do it. I was wrong.Girl, don't do it.
Wearing bandanas instead of satin scarf--used to do it. I was clueless.
Serenitybreeze, I sho used to relax every 3-4 weeks if I thought I was nappin up. I was ignorant. Girl, don't do it!
Dkbeauti, I sho used to wear some tight braids thinking if it's tight then it's right. Wrong again I was. I also took out my own sew-in before. It seemed like it ought to have been so quick and easy with no trouble.
Girls don't do it!

Wearing a wig without a wig cap...that's bad too huh? Girrl, I guess I won't be doing it--anymore after today.:lachen:

ooh, it's such a good thing that I found LHCF because I may have been pure bald by the summer. Thank y'all.

Even if your close to bald, don't try to hang on to those dry-split-climbing up your hair shaft ends that have split up and broken off and gone to join the rest of your broken off hair all in your sink, drain, combs and hair accesories.
Free yourself!
It's the hardest thing for those of us who have a hard time believing that our hair really is constantly growing. But you ladies are the proof!

---Girl, don't pour a bottle of peroxide on your hair and go out in the sun as your attempt to dye your hair, "naturally". [yeah I did it:look: :ohwell: :( :lachen: ]

Ok so is it just me or did anyone else do ALOT of the things mentioned in this thread before joining LHCF?

Me!!! (the goldnhot curlers, chemicals, peroxide experiments/color kits, trusting poor stylists, too tight braid extensions, cutting for growth..you name it):blush:

That's why i bumped it up yesterday.

I wouldn't do anything this dumb, but my friend did. ;)

Go to a Beauty SCHOOL to get your hair straightened. On top of that I...uh, I mean my friend let a white girl who didn't know a thing about black hair do it.

At least it had a good ending. As my hair, I mean my friend's hair was breaking off with each handful she desperately went searching on the internet and learned to take care of her hair through www.nappturality.com and the www.longhaircareforum.com

I remember gripping the salon chair in pain and agony...with relaxer burn. It wasn't until much later I realized it wasn't normal. Duh.

BTW, thanks for the scarf fact. :)

forgive me for bumping up this old thread. i came across it when searching for something else. after reading 90% of the thread i have to wonder if i my whole regieme in wrong :(

Dont blow dry your hair with the comb attachment. Trust me on this one, the process is so gradual that one day you will be looking at thinning hair and wonder how did this happen? Someone else on the board got me to realize this!

really? does it matter how wide the comb teeth are? i have been using a comb attachment with my dryer for years and haven't even seen a difference...

what kind of comb we are talking about? is there an alternate way of drying or just air drying or rollers are the only recommended way?

also the comments about the silk scarf knot rubbing out/thinning your hair: how else can i tie the scarf? i have a HUGE head so i tie the knot the in back near the kitchen area but i guess that is a no no? the bonnet never stays on my head either. as a matter of fact none of the scarves or bonnet stay on my head. i tried satin pillow cases but they are on their last leg now from years of wear and tear in the washer/dryer but maybe i should just go back to that?

You can dry with a wide toothed comb. The kind you use for detangling.

About the scarf, someone gave me this tip, put your scarf on and don't tie it. Use an old time stocking cap over top of the scarf to hold it in place. I think the main thing about the scarf is not tying it too tight and alternating the place where your knot is. Sometimes I tie a little to the side, sometimes in the back, sometimes in the front, etc. So the pressure of the knot isn't consistently in the exact same spot!

how else can you secure the pony without messing up your hair? i don't have the elastic band too tight but i do use hair pins to secure it. i don't pull the drawstring to tighten because that is more of a hassel to me. the only reason why i am doing pony ponies to to keep moisture in the ends of my hair.

as for combing dry hair: that is a no too? how else do you detangle? i finger comb sometimes but i thought using a wide tooth comb is ok....

Man I have soo many I could post to this thread! But the one on the top of my list would have to be the lesson I learned from constantly wearing a phony pony.

Stay away from Phony Ponies that require you to (A) put your hair in pony tail (tightly), (B) wrap a hair weave track around your real pony tail in circles....and then (C) stick BOBBY PINS around it to secure the phony pony in place!! OMG...makes no sense huh?? TELL ME ABOUT IT!

After doing this for so many years, I did not notice that I was created a problem. My hair broke, popped, was weak limp and mushy underneath the phony pony. Til this day, that spot is still trying to recover and catch up with the rest of my hair.

That styles that look good, arent always good for you or your hair. My motto...

THAT will have to be mine too! I couldn't really think of anything that through experience I could call a no-no. But yes, those types of phony pony's are a definate "GIRL DON'T DO IT!" I experienced the same thing years ago, swore off all pony's forever.

I'll add, washing your hair in a partial weave. It's not impossible to do it without breakage but it's just way to risky. And the part where the track and your braid meet may not dry properly and it's not a good look. Needless to say the fake hair breaking off your real hair in the process.

ok maybe i should try that. i was feeling the back kitchen area and it does feel kinda thin :( i am nervous as heck now

as for drying with a wide tooth comb i use conair ion shine dryer with the wider comb that comes in the box, althought i have used the smaller one and didn't see many hairs in the comb either

this is a pic, not sure if you can see the larger tooth comb well

wow this thread has me all in a panic at work. it deterred me from coloring my hair or doing anything stupid but at the same time it makes me wonder if my way of doing stuff is wrong

also bristle brushes on hair line is considered wrong too in this thread. any ideas how else you can get those hairs to lay down. i just use the brush 1x to smooth and then put the scarf on to do the rest.

I'm sure this has been said or can easily be assumed, but:

When you notice your ends are raggedy don't go to a salon you've seen often and decide to finally try out...i asked for 3 inches (I was at BSL) and I ended up SL/Mid neck

DO NOT try to go blond by dying your hair TWICE in one day--first with Dark N Lovely and the next with Afriacn Pride's highlighting kit, but i used it as a dye

DO NOT BRUSH natural hair when dry, or any other if it can be avoided
DO NOT go to a scissor happy stylist
DO NOT use a pressing comb on your hair(imo)
DO NOT go to a salon that specializes in another hair type, adn has never worked with someone w/ a relaxer, for your blond color(had to cut about 5 inches or more off there was so much damage)

OMG, in my pre-LHCF days, I have done some horrid things to my head.

1. Trying to wash my NG the way they do in the salon got me matted up SO BAD I had to cut a gumball sized knot out of my hair *at the roots*

2. Slopping relaxer all down the hair shaft instead of focusing only on NG. Can you say massive breakage?

3. Home highlights dye job from a box. Grrrrrlll.... a sistah had POLKA DOTS of bleached spots in the head. Yes. I had to get some of that cheap Bigen hair dye to cover that ish up. I sobbed like my mama had passed.

4. Extensions left in for 6 MONTHS. The accumulation was insane. It was turrble. My hair had grown about 6 inches, but it ALL broke off within like 2 weeks. :( Everyone noticed.
