Has anyone on this board gone from a short haircut to bra strap? If so, how did you maintain the short style (without using too much heat i.e. curling irons to keep the style) and how did you manage the grow out stage? Thanks

Im almost to bra strap and started really short. I did teh big chop and started from scratch. I would use gel and and water everyday . Also I would condition wash my hair everyday. If i was not using gel i would use tropical wheat germ creme as a leave in. Till this day Im still using gel and water . I changed a bit my routine added oils and tried other products.

I'm not at bra-strap yet, but I was shorter than Halle Berry two and a half years ago, and now I'm 4" from bra strap. When I first got my hair cut, I was getting it curled every week. I'd get a wash, deep condition, and then go under the dryer with my hair combed straight. Then, I'd have it curled. I would wrap it nightly in silk, and other than a small amount of oil, I'd leave it alone until it was time to get it done again. By day 5 or 6, it definitely needed to be curled, but I left it alone anyway, since I didn't own a curling iron. Once it got a little longer, I was getting it flat ironed, and finally, once it crept a little past my ears, I started getting it set again. I have a pic in my album of my grow-out stage--it was a hot mess

, but I knew I was going to go long, so I was anxious to stop the heat (because I had not used direct heat for about 10 years before that, except for the one other time when my hair was that short). I hope this helps

Thanks. I'm just comtemplating when I used to wear my hair in a cute short style, I used to do all the wrong things: use heat EVERY DAY, wash every 2 weeks or so, overlap perms, etc. So it's no wonder that my hair was breaking.

yeah, one word -- wigs. they saved me

i would just wrap my hair and wear my wig cap over it. I didnt use heat except to blowdry and i went soooo long without touching up at one point by just shampooing and getting my hair cornrowed when it got to my ears (my own hair, no extentions) and wearing it like that under my wigs that i didnt realize at the time that i was basically transitioning my hair without even knowing it

on weekends (friday and saturday)-- i would wear braidouts ( this i did when my hair got past my ears. Then on sundays i would shampoo and have it cornrowed for the next week. Easy, low maintainance and i didnt have to worry about my hair looking nice because my wigs were doing all the work for me. -- jainygirl

thanks!!

the best advice I can give to someone who wants to grow hair is...let your hair be....the more you fight your hair the more time it will take to achieve lenght

I would cainrow it with extensions sometimes or just leave it wrapped, I kept heat to a minimum. Refer to my album.

I am by no means bra strap or even near it (yet!) but I know the hardest part is that in between stage. My hair was cut to 2 or 3 inches all over bc it was so damaged. Now its shoulder length(about a year and a half later). What I did was when it was long enough, I wore a ponytail piece in order to give my hair a rest and so I wouldnt use heat. While it was in the ponytail, I would just take it down every week, wash, condition, and put it back up. This is also a good way to stretch relaxers bc I didnt relax for several months at a time(I think I only had 2 or 3 perms for that year).

When I would gently put my hair up and attach the draw string ponytail, I would tie it down with a scarf and it dried pretty straight. I dont think my hair would have grown this much without my phonytail bc its never been past my neck(being shorter on top) in my late teen or adult life.

Ive been wearing it out since March and taking good care of it and its still growing well and coming along well, but thats due to not using heat to style(only on rare occasions) or blowdrying. HTH!

I did back in 98. I've always had long hair, but I would always grow back to have my hair stay a certain length. Once I stopped relaxing my hair, the length began taking new dimensions.
