Hello All!
I did my BC on April 5, 2010, and I couldn't be happier with my decision to go natural! LOVING IT!
I had planned to not straighten until fall or winter, but my curiosity got the best of me. I lightly straightened my hair this past weekend and had my DH measure for me.
The good: My hair is extremely healthy with no splits or SSK's. Dare I say (knock on wood) that I don't think I get SSKs. We'll see how long that lasts. Other good stuff: My hair was fairly easy to straighten with small sections only using 1 pass.
The bad: I have a MULLET! nono: I absolutely hate it! Can you say 1980s Salt N Pepa/ MC Lyte look-alike! WTH??????? It will be a long time before I wear my hair out in public straightened. This extreme layering from the big chop has to grow out first. Anyone else have this experience?
My straightening method: I cowashed with Tresemme Naturals & Herbal Essence None of Your Frizziness. I rinsed with lukewarm water and gently towel blotted my hair (I usually don't use towels, but I wasn't worried about frizzies b/c I know I wasn't rockin' my curls). I then use Matrix Biolage Leave-in Spray. After soaking up a bit more water with the towel, I applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum and blow dried with my Ionic handheld blow dryer using my Denman. Didn't even shed but about 6 hairs. Impressive. Anyway, once I was blown out (and I am NOT posting that pic...looks like a mug shot! ), I parted my hair in 4 big sections. I then parted each 1/4th into 2-3 sections and pinned the rest up. As I took down a section to begin flat ironing, I applied some Sabino Moisture Block to each section and a tad bit of Redken Heat Glide. Not too much b/c my hair is easily weighed down. I then flat ironed using very thin, small sections using 1 pass of my Infrashine flat iron on about 380 degrees until my entire head was done.
I wasn't trying to get it BONE STRAIGHT, just get an idea of what it looks like now. I knew the top was shorter, but I didn't know just how 80s I looked! It's cool though. I think it's a part of the process. I am just happy to have a healthy, thriving, thick head of natural hair!
Without further ado....pics:
This is me with about 4-5" of hair immediately after my BC (4/5/2010):
This is my almost daily style and texture with conditioner left in it:
This is the 1st section I flat ironed. DH measured me at 7 1/2" back there. I am about 3" away from APL in the back:
This is a side view of the 1st full 1/2 of my head done...OH EM GEE I hate the extreme layering!
This is the back once my whole head was done:
DH claims that the top is 6 1/2" and the middle is 7" and the back is 7 1/2" but it seems way more drastic. Excuse my son walking into the last pic and the blurriness. DH moved when he saw him. Also, excuse my brows...I look like Bert from Sesame Street right now b/c my brow lady is out of town!
Thanks for looking! Overall, I am LOVING the natural side of life! 3 months natural and counting!
Be blessed, relaxed, natural & transitioning beauties! MUAH!
