Dreadlock Extensions

Dreadlock Extensions (pics!)

I got dreadlock extensions! :yay:

I just couldn't take all the maintenance of loose natural hair. It used to take hours to wash and detangle my near waist length hair, and at least a day for my braidouts to fully dry. I'm working full time now, and I don't have the time (or energy) to spend that kind of time on my hair.

I had always planned to lock my hair eventually, but I realized that I can't do it the old fashioned way. My workplace is very conservative, and I wouldn't have been able to go through the messy beginning stages of the locing process.

I started researching dreadlock extensions last summer, and was put off at first by the price. So I decided to go with the cheapest stylists in my area that offered the service. BIG MISTAKE! I ended up getting hustled, not once but twice! The first stylist (Asia in Temple Hills, MD - $500) gave me uneven locks extensions that were full of gel, and washed out pretty easily. The second one (Styles by Aisha in Woodbridge, VA) gave me a mess of track glue and kinky weave that took nearly 2 weeks to comb out. (Styles by Aisha was by far the worst. She was late to each appointment, hustled me out of $700, did an uneven rush job, then cancelled the follow up appointment.)

Last month I decided to try again with Organik Nordaz. Her price was steep ($1,400) but I'm finally happy with the way they turned out. My loctician was amazing. We started at 7 am and didn't finish until 1 am the next day. She didn't do the quick, wrap a loc method. Instead she interlocked my hair, using a latch hook and sisterloc tool. She also used organic products, all things that she had made herself.

Here's what they looked like immediately after she finished.

I love my locs now. My morning routine is super simple; take of my scarf, spritz with water, and go. I've been inspired by youtube videos, and doing all kinds of curly looks and quick updos. Wash days are a cinch. And because of the ease and quick styling, I'm finally able to do daily bikram yoga.

I gave away most of my conditioners and leave-ins. Right now I only use organic, sulfate free shampoo to prevent buildup. But even though I'm locked up now, I still can't bring myself to throw away my Denman brush and seamless comb.

And here they are a month later, after yesterday's quick and easy wash. I'll be going back to my loctician in a few more weeks for a re-twist.

Gorgeous! Are you staying in those permanently?

PS sorry you got scammed. The gallery will do those for way cheaper I have heard... not sure though.

Beautiful. They look authentic. So are you locking your own hair as well?

It takes a lot of skill to replicate dreadlocks so I'm not surprised that the cheaper attempts weren't successful.

Yup.

Yes, my hair is interlocked into the extensions, so they will grow out just like real dreadlocks. Every few weeks I'll go back to get them palm-rolled.

Give-up-the-seamless-combs...NOW. :lachen:

No way! I just can't allow myself to get rid of them.

:look: I'm also still holding on to my Cantu Shea Butter leave-in.

Wow, that is so expensive. They look really nice. I've been researching locs on YT and there seems to be so much to getting the right stylist and using the right method.

So they stay in permanently? I don't get it? My sister wants locs and I'm gonna show her this thread. So is that your full length? Or did the extensions add length for you? HollyGolightly
I really like it! It looks so real and not like extensions at all!

Thank you Pook! Yup, they're permanent. If I locked the old fashioned way, my baby locs would have shrunken to around neck length. It also would have taken a few months to fully lock. (It took almost 6 months for my brother's hair to fully lock) The extensions added length and sped up the process.

They're less expensive if you get them shorter. I wanted them long so that I could have more styling options. It was totally worth it because I plan to keep my hair locked for the rest of my life.

It was fun to have loose natural hair for a while, but it's a huge relief to not have to deal with it any more.
