don't want to be bald

I'm down right now because my daughter's scalp is in trouble. She is 10 and has virgin hair. She has been with her dad's family since school has been out. She came home the other day and I washed her hair. It was so matted together in different sections all over in the back. She has been swimming and washing her own hair  She really has no one to do her hair when she goes over there. No hair products of her own and no one to help. I use to take my time and comb it really nice, but no matter what, she would come back like who did it and why. :( But once I was able to finally get out the matted parts and the tangles, I can really see what scares me the most. There are several bald out areas on her scalp at the crown. They are in circled patches, the size of the top of an eraser . She says her scalp is really tender there Now I'm wondering if it's an allergic reaction to something she has used or a brush that wasn't clean or a scalp condition because she is going thru puberty. :(
The only thing I've found so far that sounds like it is

: Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicle roots, where hair growth begins. It is most common in people younger than 20, but children and adults of any age may be affected.

Usually clumps of hair fall out, resulting in totally smooth, round hairless patches. In some cases the hair may become thinner without distinct patches of baldness. This may happen several times.

If someone can help please reply :perplexed

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I would take her to a dermatologist ASAP just in case it's something serious. I wish I had more advice but I really don't know what to say.

I don't have much advice other than to take her to her physician or a dermatologist ASAP. Are you sure she hadn't tried to comb out her own hair and pulled pieces out at the root? If not, maybe it is something like ringworm. Try not to worry too much Yokurt, it will be okay! :)

I agree with the derm recc's, but for the future I would consider sending her to them with cornrows (natural or extension) that are done well, but not tight. And send her with her own hair products. It's a shame she's had to take care of her hair herself.

Thanks you guys, because I have no clue. It's like 7-10 plugs at random at the crown, with no hair root sprouting at all. I'll try to get a derm appt, but I allready know it will take about 2 months just to get a visit. If I didn't now any better I would say she had chicken-pox while she was gone.

For something like ringworm - if it's that, I don't think you would need to wait to go to a specialist to get that diagnosed and treated. You should DEFINITELY take her to see someone asap so you can at least make sure it's not ringworm. Left untreated, that can cause major problems.

I thought chicken pox too, except she wasn't having breakouts other places. My bro had a bald patch on his head when he got the chicken pox, luckily hair did grow back there and the space went away. Maybe you could call your daughter's primary physician and let him/her know the situation, it might help speed up the process a bit b/c you are right that dermatologist appointments may take awhile.

I agree with qtgirl's advice that in the future she wear some kind of style that will keep for awhile, especially if she will be swimming and such. Also, maybe now would be a good time to start teaching her a few things about her hair, ways in which she can care for it quick and easy. It's never too early to learn! :) Good luck to you yokourt, and please let us know how this turns out!
