P.S. In NY, particularly in Harlem, the only time you have to wait is on a Friday Evening, Saturday or Sunday. Other times you can usually sit right in the chair. They rarely take appointments. In Harlem there's a hair salon on every corner, so you almost never wait. In BK, you may have to wait on the weekend, but otherwise you should be fine.

Even on weekends, I've never waited longer than a half hour in a Dom. salon.

You are sooo right!! i live in harlem and when i first started going to dominican hair salons, I would love the stylists and always wondered why there never were any customers there and how they stayed open for business.

One day, I went on a Sat. b/c I had forgotten my hair treatment earlier in the week. Well it was packed like a can of sardines. I could barely make my way across.

I'm natural so I can't just blow dry the roots....but for the past year or so I got my hair blown out every other week for the most part. It looked AMAZING! I had to stop because I swim in the summer and it would be a waste--plus I thought it would be good to give my hair a break!

I think that some stylits might be too harsh. The NICE salon that I go to uses a very gentle technique.

Ladies, I'm so excited. The only thing is I may fall in love with my hair again and then not be able to find someone here in NC who can repeat the process.

But Tracy if you can find out anything about the salon in Raleigh, it would be great, I'm only an hour away, and I'm up there a lot anyway. Please let me know.

I'm not in Raleigh. If I find a salon it will be in Charlotte, where I am. Otherwise it's all me!

I've only been getting blowouts consistantly for about 4 months but I've noticed that my hair is thicker now. I know most of this is due to me stretching out my relaxer for 9 months but the blowouts actually make my hair fuller because the hair is weighed down with lots of products and the hair is very bouncy. I haven't seen one thin head of hair where I get my blowouts done.

Well here's my plan. Dominicans every week for just wash, deep conditioning, and set.. Every 4th week, I will treat myself to a blowout

Girl, I remember those days. My pockets are hurting now. I'm thinking of going natural myself, cuz I can't afford these $30 roller sets.

This is a little off subject but for those of you who use dominican salons do you prefer it over regular salons? Is it really that much of a difference? I was considering a blowout because I heard it makes your hair so bouncy and pretty. And since I'll be in NYC next month I want hair that my man will want to play in. Can anyone suggest any dominicansalons in Brooklyn? TIA!!!!

Yes, I am addicted to blowouts

You will be amazed at how wonderful your hair looks after your salon visit

Den,

Didn't the RollerWrap Express(AA salon) do a blow out for you.

That sounds like a great plan Denali! Mine was similar except I did blow my roots every week, and then I did a full blowout once a month or every two months or so.

Zora - girl you ain't nevah lied! Just be glad you still HAVE a place to get a $30 rollerset! I can get a cheapish one here but I KNOW it won't be anything like my Dom. blowouts....

Oh REALLY, I didn't know that
grin.gif

I was thinking about alternately between Dudley's Hair Rebuilder (or that Crom Collegen Conditioner not sure) & Salerm Wheat Germ Mask every week..
And taking every fifth week off to clarify and do DRC treatment

How does that sound

No blow-outs because I just colored my hair

Dominican hair and blakc hair is the same...

at least 99% of the dominicans i see in ny..i see no difference btwn their hair and our hair...after all they share our ancesetral traits..

as for the blow outs..i think too much heat in any form will make ones hair thin...esp if someone is using those hair blowers that the dominicans use...that type of heat can be damaging point blank...what the point of long thin hair...

I would love to get this one day. Im just scared my curl pattern wont come back. I wonder if It would look right if I just did the rollerset?

I agree with Tracy. I live next door to and go to school with Dominicans and many, many (not all) of them relax their hair just like many of us. The little 13 year old girl next door to me had shoulder length 4a/3c type hair. Then some time early last year, her mother started relaxing it, this child get's beautiful blow outs every week. She is now bra strap length and her hair is always bouncy and beautiful.

I also think the idea about Dominicans having different hair than we do is faulty reasoning. Dominicans have a range of hairtypes, just like AA's do, and some of their heads can take more heat, and some can take less. But they all maintain their hair roughly the same way, varying in things like frequenecy and in between maintenance, and the health of their hair varies as a result - just like ours does.

Are'nt most Dominicans mixed with African Spanish and native Carib indian blood .. Spaniards do have really thick hair as do Italians , in strand amount and strand diameter , could this be why their hair is stronger than "ours"
Also too My sister lives on 145 th and Broadway in NYC and most of the Dominicans around her neighbourhood have relaxed hair just like my friend Dionne in my album who's natrually 3c 4a has been relaxed since she was about 7 yrs old, At that age It WAS down to where a bra strap would be.

Sounds like almost exactly what I used to do.

Be careful with the Dudley's Rebuilder though. Make sure they use that mositurizing conditioner after - I used to have to do the protein and the moisture myself at home to make sure it was done right - and I never could make clear to her why I needed so much conditioning. I used to jsut walk in with the MC still in my hair and let them rinse and set me. That's when they charged me less too - as long as it was a weekday.
wink.gif
If you don't need anything after Dudley's, then you're straight.
smile.gif

They know what to do with the DRC, so that should be no problem. If they look at it funny, tell them it's like Emergencee (Nexxus) and they'll do the protein/mositure routine.

But that's JUST what I used to do.

That is what this stylist told me. She said our hair isn't as strong as dominicans, and we can't take that type of stress on a regular basis

She said the tugging causes mid-shaft breakage, which makes the hair appear thinner...
I have heard similar stories on this board.
I just wanted to hear your thoughts on this subject.

I know I'm probably late on this thread but if I may add my two cent

I was thinking of this today; when I use to get my hair relaxed in the salon, my hair was a very thin and fine texture. I didn't blow dry to often except to blow out my roots. I felt what gave my hair the thinning & fine appearance was their technique of relaxing. Pretty much they always seem to overlap at least an inch each time and really really tried to get the hair as straight as straight can be (based on my experience). I would think that the straighten alone caused the hair to apprear thinner not so much the blow drying.
