Do you NOW assume....

So I'm sitting here at the salon (typing from under the dryer - doing a DC- from my blackberry), and there is this girl in front of me with what seems to be lovely healthy BSL 4a/3c hair. And I was SURELY admiring it, she has it in a ponytail and it just looks like she needs a little touch up. My stylist goes over and talks to her (she's her client) and I then realize from the conversation she has a weave. Now my stylist is AMAZING with weaves, mine were always perfectly realistic and blended well, so I'm not surprised.

But on the other hand since partaking my hair journey I notice people's hair. And I've been noticing a NUMBER of black women with healthy long hair. And I get that admiration/envy thing going that I wish I had that length but in a good way as it inspires me. But today leads me to wonder just how many are rockin an amazing weave. When I wore weaves I just assumed a lot of other Black women were because "our hair doesn't grow that long.". Now I know better and assume everyones hair I see is theirs.

Anyways just thought this was an interesting conversation piece. So my question for all of you is do you assume that a lot of the women you see with long hair (that looks natural/real and not a HAM) sport their own? Has this been an observation you've made since joining LHCF. Lol. Gosh I have too much time on my hands today.

idk .. I can usually tell who's it is .. sometimes I'm not sure though .. but now I don't automatically assume its weave though ..

I am a lot more willing to give long heads the benefit of the doubt now and no longer automatically assume it's a weave... but I'm a pretty good weave detector so all I have to do is examine it a little more to determine whether its a phony or not :yep:

^^^what she said. i can usually tell, but i don't ASSUME. i have been thrown for a few doozies though... took several glances to tell for sure... :lachen:

Since I love weave spotting like it's a sport, :lachen: if I can't tell it's a weave then I deduce it's theirs.

I ahve been noticing a looot more long hair after I have started my hair journey. It's like G-d is tourturing me.

If it doesn't obviously look like a weave (i.e no scalp visible for miles :lachen:), then yeah, I do automatically assume it's real. Especially after I joined this forum

LOL..naw girl..see it as him showing you it can be done!:)

I used to assume "Weave!" but since joining LHCF I just assume "OOH, pretty, long hair! I wonder what she does?" It doesn't help that I have terrible weave-dar though. One time I asked a lady in WalMart with pretty, thick hair if she got it done nearby because I was looking for a stylist. She just said, "No, I don't get it done around here." Some people are secretive about their hair so I didn't think much about her strange tone. I saw her later and realized she was wearing a wig. Now I just don't ask.

Yeah, I have thought that too now. Since I know healthy long hair on black women is possible like I thought it could be, I assume long natural hair is usually their hair. I've seen so many nice weaves that are natural until I now know that might not be their hair. I've also learned this with puffs. I assumed that puffs, especially if natural, were their real hair...

Same here about the puffs. It never even occured to me that naturals wore fake hair.

I'm noticing the opposite around my neck of the woods. :look: The state of black women's hair is getting worse and weaves are becoming more obvious. :ohwell:

When my hair was long and straight people white and black assumed it was weave or a wig until I wore styles that couldn't be accomplished with a weave or the wigs available (pre lace-front days).

Then everyone just questioned my ethnicity. :perplexed

When I went texlaxed and natural everyone assumed it was my hair...which further confirmed their theories about my ethnicity.

This is why I hate @$$umptions. :wallbash:

Thanks for the responses ladies.

Heck. I thought my weave-dar was SPOT on too, until my LHCF days that is. Now yes I can spot the obvious ones, lol, but then there are these women - A LOT I've noticed over the past few months here - that I'm like dang when did everyone really start growing fierce hair!? I try not to be the one to stare or be all up in yo' scalp (LMAO @ weave spottong sport lol) but its just funny to me now whereas I assume that they all grew their manes.

Heck, its all nice regardless, I'm just patiently working toward the day when my APL-BSL tresses are really mine too!

If I can't tell it's a weave, I assume it's theirs. Round here though, you can spot a weave from 15 ft!!! :nono:

If anyone has weave skills and wants to move to Memphis, from the looks of heads, there is a DEFINITE niche you can fill....

Usually if I see a head of beautiful hair I assume it's hers unless I can tell otherwise. I'm usually wondering what's her regimen?

Before joining this site I would automatically assume weave. However, now that I know better, I assume it's real.

I saw a woman on Friday night at an event with MBL hair and I thought it was all her hair....and as bad as I wanted to approach her to compliment her on her hair, I didn't.

When I was wearing fusion weave so many people complimented me on my hair that I just started to say "thank you" and move on rather than explain the fusion weave process.

You just never know these days unless it's just a visibly bad weave.

It's hard to tell these days b/c there are soo many weave techniques that are really deceiving...and so is the hair..nowadays you can get quality hair that is not all stiff & shiny.....back in the day, it would be kind of obvious but these days, you can fool anyone

So I don't assume but then again, I don't put it past them either LOL!!!

I'm a real life hair stalker just as much as I am a fotki hair stalker. I stare at long hair with reckless abandon! I find that most weaves are fairly detectable. And with my super X-ray supergirl stare I like to think that I can usually tell. But I don't assume unless there is a clear indication.

Otherwise I believe that it is real.

Well, I have a full-head weave with no scalp visible for a mile, so I would surely be victim of the weave-dar.

Other than the no scalp showing, I think it looks just fine. I am not wearing it to fool people, it is merely a protective style so I don't really mind if people know or ask me if it's fake. In fact I love for them to ask so that I can tell them all about LHCF and my regimen.

I know what my ultimate goal is and my hair is healthier now than it's ever been before. I'm in the hands of Reniece and hopefully next year this time I will be sporting my own APL hair. :drunk:

naw, unless the hair is 1b fuzzy at the roots and indian silky #33 on the bottom, I usually assume its their hair. I have gotten out of the thinking that long black hair is rare or something people buy. I know better now. I think a small part of the weave detective syndrome comes from jealousy whether conscious or unconscious:yep:

I have ALWAYS assumed beautiful hair was real. Then again, I've never been able to tell grown from sewn unless I see tracks. :ohwell:

LOL - this is an interesting thread. I, too, have been going through the same thing. I used 2 be a serious weave detective & like the OT, assumed that most long has was a weave. Now I try & give people the benefit of the doubt. So I'll be ready to ask someone are they Niko's cousin & then I'll look again & realize it's a weave. :ohwell:

interesting thread. i was just noticing this when coming back home today for the weekend. in the subway, i noticed that like i swear 75% of the black girls i saw had weaves in. and not only weaves but BAD ones. i'm talking the shinier than patent leather, no scalp visible, or scalp visible but CLEARLY textured hair trying to cover up the bone straight weave type. And it was all the same length! why do people who get weaves in this city go for bone straight hair when its so hard to blend and/or look real? and why is it ALWAYS bsl? its come to the point where i see a girl with bsl hair and i go WEAVE, but if its apl i'll look twice :lachen:

I don't have a problem w/ weaves, I was merely answering the question, no offense intended:grin::nono:

i can't help but to assume that all the long haired girls are weaved up around here. It's sometime obvious  Other times, I can tell right off the back that a girl's hair is real.

they're guilty until proven innocent ;)

I too have terrible weave-dar, and so unless it's pretty obvious I tend to generously assume that the woman in question is sporting her own hair.
