Do you go to a salon-ever?

Hi all,

I'm curious to see how many of you still go to a salon. I have a good relationship with my stylist and after becoming a member of this board, I requested that she use different products on my hair, and she's even going to start using Chi silk infusion and Joico K-pak upon my request!

I am capable of doing my hair on my own, but I lead a pretty busy life and sometimes I prefer to have her do it in under two hours when it would take me all day to dry my hair condition it etc.

Anyway, have you completely given up going to a salon in favor of doing your hair yourself? or do you still go to a salon ocassionally?

I haven't been to the salon since Sept. 2006 and I've gained 5", cut 1.5" kept 3.5 inches with my hair practices. I think I can do it on my own. If I find that I need to go back to the salon, I'm not ruling that out.

Only for my touch up, and then I leave with my hair wet since I air dry. I do not enjoy salon visits where I live because it is usually an all day affair. They will hem you up all day.

You have beautiful hair :)

i havent been to a stylist in about 2 years!
My mom has been putting my relaxers in and I do everything else..wash, deep condition, rollersets, etc. :) ;) :p and my hair is still thriving and flourishing like crazy. But if u found a stylist who will abide by your wishes then that is good!

thank you! :)

i hear you about the "all day affair" thing....i'd probably give up my salon visits if she wasn't so good about getting me out in an hour or two and did do my hair so well!

Yeah, I still go. When I am feeling lazy but need to wash it or when I want to try a style that I can't do. No matter how I set it, my rollersets don't come out salon perfect so if I really want to look extra special I go. I just always insist on conditioner and no one puts scissors to my head. I am thinking about going this week because I want a wet and wavy look and I still can't do that.

yeah, i think its all about having a stylist that you TRUST and one who LISTENS to you...

I used to. I havent been to one since august.
For some reason my hair is growing faster than when I went to one. I dont know if its because Im taking better care of my hair or what.

My hair gets straighter definatly when I went to one. Im still kinda underprocessing in some areas self relaxing but I know that each time i relax im getting better at my technique.

I figured if I can take care of myself and learn how to self relax why should i waste time going to a hair stylist waiting for her to do my hair, then using too much heat on my hair, leaving the relaxer longer cause my head to start to burn, overcharging me and then saying she should trim my ends and end up trimming too much off.

But ..some people are better off going to see a hair stylist. Its hard to find a good hair stylist around where I live.

I went to get some twists earlier in the month, but before that I hadn't been since October. I used to go to the salon every two weeks though, so these long stretches without them are quite a feat for me.

The last time I went was once for July 4th weekend. I haven't been since, don't forsee myself going unless a very very special occasion and even then I may do it myself.

i'd love to do a relaxer on myself- i'm just terrified! when you first relaxed yourself, what did you use?

lol i was scared as hell the first time i did it. honestly im still scared each time i do it.

I practiced with conditioner. I think it helped. I know that if i relaxed it all at once my hair would be probably tore up and severly overprocessed. I rathr be a little underprocessed than overprocessed.

I learned this technique on here where you do it in halves. like I do the back first and then I put a shower cap in the front so i dont get it wet. After 15 minutes of relaxing the back i wash it out.

Then i take the shower cap off the front. if its wet I blow dry it on cool and make sure its dry. Then I proceed to relax the front and then wash it out.

my mom has her own salon, i only go there if i need a trim or i want to use her professional equip, like hood dryers or flatirons lol

I only go to the salon like once a month or once every 2 months---for style purposes only My hair loves The Famous Dominican Blowout ---the salon I go to is a Dominican Salon.

I just popped in to say that I haven't been to a salon in over five years.

EDIT: I lied, I've been to get braids a few times.. does that count? hehe.

I used to go to the Dominicans every 2 weeks, but there aren't any around where I live now. I have not been to a black salon in about 5 years. I scheduled an appointment with a lady whose card I saw at the bss, her card was very detailed and said she specializes in healthy hair and soft styles. I made the appointment and called her back because I forgot to ask her what products she uses, she told me she uses Motions. I decided to cancel the appointment I am not paying $60 and you are using cheap products.

I hadn't been for years until I went in December to get my roots bleached.
I knew there was a reason I stopped going. My hair came out orange. I could have done a poor job myself, didn't need to pay someone to do it for me. (Although I would have overlapped if I did it myself if my relaxer days are anything to go by!)

Why oh why do I not have any hair expert friends....

Since I did the bc and went natural in 3/05 I have gone to the salon three times.

I texturized in 8/06. I haven't gone to a salon yet because I have really bonded with my hair, found the right products and have more styling options.

I do plan on going back to Balisi really soon for a trim, rinse and some pampering.:)

I haven't been to a salon since Sept. 2005 when I last had my hair trimmed; before then I only went for relaxers anyway, so other than the odd trim, I don't envision returning to any salon on a regular basis.

BTW, welcome to the board, lovegan. Your hair is really pretty.
