I had a talk with one of my friend’s and she gets most of her natural hair information from YouTube. I believed there is a lot of misinformation being put out to people. She said she avoids any product that has alcohol in it including fatty hydrating alcohols (the ones found in leave ins and conditioners) like cetyl, Stearyl, Cetearyl, just because a Youtuber told her to avoid all things alcohol.
Also, we had a decision on silicones. She said she avoids silicones and use oil to flat iron her hair. My eyes became huge with concern. I told her she was cooking and frying her hair with that oil and that silicone acts a coating barrier to protect hair from heat and give it shine. She cutted me off and rolled her eyes at me. Yes, silicones are not that great to use all the time, but it has some benefits as well.
She’s been natural for awhile and her hair has been sitting collarbone length (stretched) for a minute and she wants it to grow longer. I have way more shrinkage than her (she doesn’t moisturize her hair; and rely on oils to grow her hair from her scalp) and I am almost at BSL length again after a big chop I did to neck length hair last year (second big chop).
Do you feel like there is a lot of misinformation or half information (the cons and not the pros) going around to people when it comes to their hair?
