Low, medium or high heat? I really can't take this high heat but I want all the benefits of a hot deep conditioner. Will I still get it from medium heat?

Tried it with high and couldn't take it so have been doing it the last 4 months on medium for 20-30 mins...still turns out great. In fact, the only difference is that I'm not constantly trying to shield my ears. My hair turns out the same.

Edit: I might be using medium-high...it's a Pibbs on 50

I use my Dryer for Protein Rx's and it's on HIGH but I'm only under there about 20 minutes Max maybe?

And I use my Steamer for Moisturizing Rx's on HIGH.:yep:

I do my DC on low heat. You don't need a lot of heat for a DC. The purpose of heat is to open the cuticles of the hair and that can be done with low heat. You don't need to cook the conditioner into your hair

I agree. I rarely DC with heat, but when I do it is on super low heat. Try it and see if there's a difference. I'm sure you will still benefit.

I've gotten a good DC just off my body heat by slapping a grocery bag on my head and working out for 45 minutes.
Kills two birds with one stone and it's free.

Don't take much lol. No need to put your head in the microwave.

I use high heat for about 5min just to warm it up a bit, then I turn it down to med heat.

15 min High heat the whole time :look:

It's a heat cap and doesn't get super hot. It's probably more like medium on a hooded dryer.

Likewise. My heating cap has a problem with uniform heat and I have to turn it to heat the back anyway. It's not that hot anyway. It's a crappy gold n hot.

TY Supergirl. Although I always use low or medium heat, may I ask, why not high? :yep:

I imagn the high heat could possibly alter the composition of the DC to the point that its no longer effectv? Or ovrcondtiong could occur. Just a thought... I know the ques was directd to anothr

I used high on occasion when my hair was really dried out. I thought it would make the DC 'stronger' lol and penetrate more but what u ladies r sayg makes good sense. It shld be warm enuf to open the cuticles and thats it

Sitting under the dryer now with conditioner and high heat. Never knew high was not good.

The purpose of high heat is to dry the hair and at a faster rate. That is contrary to the purpose of a conditioner. Fortunately the plastic cap helps to reduce the effects of the heat by holding the moisture in.

If you can't stand the heat, definitely try the lower setting. I think you will find it works just as well without all of the discomfort.

Using high heat is damaging. It's more likely to swell (and therefore weaken) the hair cuticle.
... potentially causing hydral fatigue or even the dreaded bubble hair. :nono:

I had fine, bonelaxed hair and followed the baggying/dc with heat advice for, like, five minutes. The experiment was unsuccessful. :ohwell:

I just deep conditioned on medium heat for 20 minutes and it was such a realief. My head is warm, not hot how it use to be but warm. It's funny because I'm not a sweater like if it's 100 degrees out, you can't even tell I'm hot but under the dryer sweat be dripping from under my leg eww. In the shower I go

sounds like you were slow cooking yourself lol. glad the lower heat worked for you.

Dc'ing now...turning down the high heat! Thanks Supergirl! !! It feels so much better! Is there a minimum/ maximum time for dc effectiveness?

If using a dryer, 7 minutes is what a stylist once told me. She said it (the conditioner) doesn't do anything else after that. But I will say, if you're working with a conditioner that's rich in emollient ingredients, you can get more of a "soak" by leaving the product on longer.

For body heat, 15-30 minutes is sufficient.

With most conditioners, there is no harm in leaving them in longer. I wouldn't do it with conditioners that are heavy on protein though.

Medium heat

But when I do use heat (that is not body heat), I use a steam cap so the temperature doesn't really bother me.

Protein DCs with hooded dryer on low (5-10 minutes max)

Moisturizing DCs with steamer on high (not really a hotter temperature, just higher steam output to me; 30-45 minutes max)

I have one of those bonnets that you stick in the microwave to heat, so I guess low heat. It stays hot for 45 minutes. I then stick back in the microwave and out it on for another 45 minutes. I have low porosity hair so it takes a while for the conditioner to soak in.

All my conditioners are protein free. The only time I use protein is after I relax.
