Ladies,

I've been on my healthy hair care journey since June 05. That is 8 months. I've read threads with ladies claiming to have attained 4+inches of hair in that period and I have not. I've gained maby only 2 of those 4 inches. I know some women claim to just reach a healthy thick hair stage at first, and then they saw the length. I hope that is true for me. I have very very healthy hair! It is thick and not breaking. I am growing out layers, and I can honestly see the progress in my hair evening up. However, I have not seen as much vertical growth as I hoped! Can u ladies please share your growth stories/ patterns with me. Did you get thick and healthy first? I am transitioning, and I have tried all topical growth products mentioned on this board. I have baggied and protective styled. Not much heat, tie up at night and all that. What's da deal? I know the winter growth regression may have s/t to do with it, but any suggestion will be appreciated.

Personally I would love to see some thickness with my hair, my hair is getting longer, but it just gets thinner and thinner. I know that it's probably because I've only just begun learning how to take care of my hair. I had my hair in braids for a 1 1/2 years and it grew SO much, thought I could do the natural thing, but decided to relax w/ Phyto. My hair was gorgeous for about 2 or 3 months, but gradually lost hair due to lack of protein, and massive tangling, and each time I relax my hair is longer but for me I'd rather have shorter thicker hair than long thin hair.

It's really discouraging to look at my hair now, but I just have to believe that since I'm starting to understand this whole hair process due to this board that it will get better.

I wonder what the difference could be between the two of us, if it's just how the hair is maintained or if it's just due to genetics? I don't get it....

I noticed growth 1st & now thickness. My hair was not what I would categorize as thick, but when I trimmed on Saturday I was surprised by how much my hair had thickened.

Sorry u are discouraged! I can relate. I'd rather have short thick instead of long thin. What kind of styles are you wearing? I know Roller sets make hair look thicker as do no heat styles like braid outs and twist. Good Luck in thickening up. Girl dis stuff on my head is so thick! I just need it to grow longer now!

I noticed my natural hair is really thick and healthy. I would use castor oil to help thicken it up and now it is showing lenght. When I wear my hair in twists, it really shows my lenght off. My back is past my shoulders.

This may just be an individual thing. When I started my daily washing regimen after my big chop (last March) I noticed length first. In the past few months my hair has still been making steady progress but about a quarter inch slower per month than it was in the summer. I was thinking it was probably a seasonal thing, but I have noticed recently that my hair feels thicker than I'm used to, even when it's soaking wet in the shower (which means it isn't just an illusion due to the fluffiness of my natural texture). So I may be going through a "thickening phase" now. When spring/summer hits I'll be able to see if I indeed get the increase in speed again.

Don't be discouraged. Hair just kinda grows on its own little schedule; Different sections growing faster or slower than others, differing textures on the same head, slow growth for a certain period followed by a major growth spurt, etc. The best we can do is to continue our healthy hair habits and let it do its thing.

Well for me it seems like my hair will reach a length, then it will thicken up, then it stretches to another length, and thickens up again  So far this is working really well for me. I am watching my hair get progressively thicker with each new bench mark. Thanks ladies for all the tips and product suggestions. I love LHCF

Mine really thickened out first as I gave up heat totally. It was so thin and breaking from being fried almost daily with a curling iron and hot comb (didn't even have a flat iron). Eventually, my hair started show some length then thickened again. I never knew this happens and now since I recognize the cycle, it would be interesting to chart it.

I started my hair journey 07/05. Yes I saw thickness 1st before I saw length. I would say during this time my hair has grown about 4 inches. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. As for me, I found eliminating heat during the 1st few months of my journey really helped. Since my hair has gown out a bit, I do use heat about twice per month but no heat or low heat has really helped speed my process.

When I first started my hair journey, I remember my hair appearing thicker first before actually seeing the length.

If you're transitioning, from my experience, the hair may actually seem thicker but shorter. It is not shorter though; it just may appear this way. This is because your new growth (natural hair) is growing outward while your relaxed ends hang limp (downward). I always found that very interesting when I was transitioning that my hair appeared shorter than it really was. Stretching the strands would give me an idea about where my length was.

Now that I'm natural, my hair is already thick as can be but I did notice my hair appear thicker as it grew (most likely because there's a whole lot more of it).

Since you're transitioning, the important thing is that you keep your newgrowth moisturized and healthy...especially at the line of demarcation. HTH

i am experiencing this now. But luckily i have charted this in my Fotki. Though it feels as like i havent made much progress since last year, i can see thickness is what is leading right now. Hopefully summer will bring me a little length now.

Thanks for bringing up this topic. I never thought about it until now, but I think this is happening to me. This is the longest I've ever allowed my hair to grow before cutting back above shoulders. It's seems to be growing slowly right now, but getting thicker. I haven't had any breakage, so I know I'm keeping what I grow.....I've even noticed some short hairs (like and inch or two) throughout my head and around my hair line. Maybe some dormant follicles just got active.

What do you guys think of that? :perplexed

:) Hey Pretty-girl#1, i started around the same date as you june 05, i ve been completely natural. This april it will mark 9 months i m growing my hair from scratch. in my case i did experience both thicker and longer but i was very aggressive and extreme in my regimen. I noticed that when i always wear my hair out or take only my vits from time to time, my hair takes longer to grow and is just thicker and healthier but i know the abnormal growth in 8months is just due to extreme discipline, i wont lie i had to change my diet and avoid fast and fried foods, incorporate more water, eliminate shampoo, keep my hair in protective styles, take my vits religiously, keep the hair moisturised and keep my hands off my hair all the time so i never know my growth until i see the results within a week or a month.

its hard but my advice to see more length, you have to manipulate it less to avoid any breakage, no heat ,keep it in buns or ponytails or braids, no friction, get a multivit, wash it once a week or twice if you wash frequently, try then to avoid shampooing a lot just once or twice a month. most of the time the hair gets thicker and longer after but to help with length you can take silica and biotin with a multivit it helps a lot to see length. and sometimes when you forget about it but follows your regimen, you be surprised at the length you can grow unaware.

Everytime it gets longer, I end up cutting it because it looks so thin :( It seems like I cant have thick and long hair... le sigh.

That's the way it is for me. I also noticed that I was retaining more length after my transition was complete.

My hair thicken up before I could notice length, even after tasking a shower. I would have to blow dry to really see length.

my hair took off at the beginning of my hair journey....it seems to have slowed down....but it really has thicken up....so i think its just going in stages...thickening up and then growing a little bit faster
