CRUNCHY Rollersets!!

I just did another rollerset tonight. It came out frizzy and crunchy again, mainly at my ends!!!! I don't know what happened! I let it airdry! I sprayed it with water mixed with evoo and dried it under the dryer for an hour and a half. Any tips or pointers? Maybe I should have sealed my ends before I rolled them.

Hmmm...were your ends soaking wet and laying flat on the roller neatly when you started to roll?

After I wash my hair I leave it really wet--only gently squeezing out excess but it's still a little 'drippy'. I only use my leave-in (abba nourishing or terax botanicals) mainly on my ends but I do use it all over too (throughout my hair) only a quarter amount or a little more. I then put a little jojoba oil mixed with my serum (Kiehls, Aveda Brilliant or Mizanis Serum) on the hair--again mainly applying to ends (only three small pumps).
I get my water bottle ready...I fill it with water and keep my hair wet all over while I am rolling. I always spray the ends right before putting my roller on even though it's already 'wet'. I always spray it again and it lies down flat on the roller and then I roll:yep:.

I then sit under the dryer for 30-40 min and it dries very fast and very well all over. I never get frizzy ends and my curls are always soft and bouncy. The less product the better IMO. Don't add anything..you may be using too much of a product. I've found that if I use too much oil the hair does not dry as fast. My hair will hold the water longer with too much oil. HTH

I bet it's the EVOO under the dryer. Try a creamy leave-in like NTM and use just a dab and try airdrying all the way (ideally overnight :yep:) That should do something

Hmmm, now that I think about it, I didn't check to see whether my ends were flat and straight against the rollers. I will admit that it did get better. My rollersets have been usually crunchier than this... :perplexed Do I maybe need to get a smaller toothed comb to ensure that my hair has been detangled?

I agree that it may be too much product. After coming out the shower I just add my leave in and seal with oil, then I roller set making sure I extend the hair all the way to the end, place the roller at the ends and then roll downwards. My hair comes out with nice soft curls also you need an oil that works with your hair.African Angel coconut oil keeps my hair soft and my ends moisturized.

I wouldn't use the smaller comb to detangle:nono:...just use your detangling (wide toothed comb ) to do that before you even start to roll. You can detangle in the shower after you have DC'd:yep: I find this way to be best for me. That way when you get out of the shower you are done with detangling and can just apply your leave in (run it over your hair to the ends) and do the same with your 'sealer'. Then while you are sectioning your hair...make sure you spray each section with a lot of water first and then comb through the ends with the smaller comb(they should already be detangled) to make sure they are 'neat' and smooth then put it on the roller and roll tightly but not too tight(does that make sense???.....lol...sorry if it doesn't I'm getting tired I guess).

For my rollersets, my ends must lay flat and straight around the roller. Everytime, I seal my ends with an olive/coconut oil mixture. My ends come out nice and smooth. Remember, practice makes perfect.:yep:

Yeah, you're right. I think I'm gonna try to seal my ends next time.

what kind of rollers do you use and how small were they?magnetic rollers are really good. and make sure you get the hair ends wet enough that they 'stick' to the roller, and that they are wrapped smoothly around it. it could possibly be the oil that you put on there that made it do this though. when i used to do my rollersets, i used watered down leave in conditioner (motions is good , elasta qp is too) to keep my hair wet while i rollersetted. then i experimented with foam setting lotions ( dudleys, motions foam wrap) they work well if you are trying to have firmer curls with hold. i dont recall ever putting oil on there until afterward my style was finished. i always seem to think of oil like cooking grease. once that heat hits it, it heats it up and it 'cooks' whatever its on. try not to use too much oil when applying heat . i mean, of course, everyones hair is different, so different results. but if you keep experiencing the same thing, that could be the culprit

Wow I never thought about the oil that way. The funny thing is I think the rest of my hair did a little better with the oil. The last time I did a rollerset it was so crunchy I couldn't even comb through it! I guess next time I may need to eliminate the oil and concentrate more on my ends.

yeh, thats why i know everyones hair is different.it also may make a difference if you are relaxed or natural. maybe just try without the oil one time and use something different, like a serum or leave in, and see if the results are what you like. i rememeber using oil with a wet wrap and it came out very dry and hairs were breaking more than usual. so you have to just experiment and find whats best for you. :yep:

I just did my roller set. I haven't done one in years. I'm excited to see how it turns out .

I'm confused did you airdry or sit under the dryer??

I have had the crunchy sets in the beginning due to using setting lotion that was pure, not diluted. I have learned to use a waterbased spray to rewet my hair. I mix water, some kind of serum and a liquid leave in treatment and that has worked well for me.

Once I get out of shower, I'm drippin', I squeeze excess water but not to dry it up. No towel touches my head:nono: that would cause problems for me. I take a creamy leavin put that on and go around the nape, edges and ends.....then I have put oil on top all over....never spraying repeatedly ( maybe that's where it was too much) The final results are smooth sets. I do use a small toothed comb and I couldnt do the sets with out that. The key to using this tool is to make sure your hair is wet/ heavy from product and water.

I have in the past tried to continue doing parts that have dried already and that is a nono....If you ever sit in a salon they are usually sprayin occassionally, even if it is just at your ends....those have to lay flat like someone said prior.

Don't give up and be gentle and slow when you are doing your sets....it does take time to perfect.
