Counterfeit Hair Products - - GMA investigation

Well today I was just browsing in Target and they have like Biosilk and Matrix in there I thought that was crazy. I also saw some Mizani products in a regular BSS and was like I know that is not suppossed to be in there.
 
i guess i would be surprised since its like BIG stores like target and CVS...

...but i did see the paul mitchell commercial last week where he said "sold ONLY in salons" and i was like whoa there must be something to this. i bet that stuff at tjmaxx isnt even worth it, even though i was feenin for it.
 
I bought a ton of Abba Nourishing products from Marshalls. Since they've changed the packaging Marshall's has had a large amount of the original packaged product in their stores. They look, feel, and smell identical to the ones I bought at Trade Secret, but I will go back to buying from salons now. Better safe than sorry.
 
yeah thats interesting, so far , everything always feels/acts/seems exactly the same

something to look out for tho

i can always find mizani and other proproducts in any big bss...lol they're usually behind the counter but if folks asked you can buy them. but wow, i would never want contaminated products or their ccc products. i hope i'm not getting got buying my products online b/c I KNOW atleast everything sold here in the KSA is grey marketed.
 
So not only are the Asian beauty supply stores are doing this, the big name department stores are also in this little scam. That's a darn shame. BTW, Sally's Beauty Supply is certified as valid when selling salon products?

yup...some stuff you have to have a license to buy and most likely they'll have a red discount card.

Wow! Very informative! This might explain when we ( as a community here) lament about products and others say "oh - this is great!"

:nono: I always thought it was strange that Target had salon products. Head and Shoulders??? Sure...... Faruok? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
 
Wow, if this is proven true, these mega stores are opening themselves up to mega lawsuits! They are taking such a potentially huge risk. I mean how much money is really in it for them given the risk/benefit analysis. Seems would be easier, cheaper in the long run and less bad PR to just get the license to sell the real thing.

Now the BSS (not Sally's), they're small fry and might just risk it. But deep pockets like CVS, walgreen, target, walmart?!! Wow!

Waiting to see where the first lawsuit is file . . .
 
This is good info...it's not just limited to shampoo and cond it's also happening with major household brands like Tide and Dove soaps...you'll see them in dollar stores and discount stores for much less than the big retailers but the product will not perform the same and the packaging is cheaper and may have most of the writing in another language like Spanish...the products can cause major irritation and rashes and won't have the same scent as the originals....I was told by one discount store employee that the bootleggers pay a small price for the use of the trademark name and put their own ingredients inside of the packaging and that most consumers don't even notice the differences

ooo i know what you mean. i've always knew that anything bought in the dollar store was all knock-off's. you get what you pay! i hope wal-mart isn't doing this....i love me some super wal-mart/super target!

ya'll they did say target buys from a legit vendor.

With Sheldeez the main concern is their poor customer service...see feedback in the vendor review forum....some members haven't received products and they've been known to be really slow with shipping
 
Not CVS

Oh no! I purchased $200 worth of Nexxus products from CVS in May since they were part of the monthly ECB promotion. I knew that I was taking a chance at the Asian BSS, but I trusted the big names like Target, CVS, and WalMart.
 
There is another take on this though. The "salon products" that we see in the big stores like Target, Kroger, CVS are more than likely ‘diverted’ products (instead of counterfeit) that were sold to the store by a legitimate distributor of the product. It helps a "Biolage" boost their sales volume by having an exclusive product at the local Wal-mart for a few pennies less. The quality isn't necessarily any different from what you can purchase in the salon. At one time these products were exclusive to salons so it is usually the more seasoned ones that end up in the large chain stores.

Really big stores have way to much exposure to participate in some counterfeit business. They would have lawsuits out the ying yang from Paul Mitchell, Biolage, CHI and the whole gamut, and even aware consumers. At the end of the day its all a game. I've been hearing this for a minute. I thought that what you see in big name stores was overstock from salons. Just the other day I went inside Supercuts to get my ends trimmed and I swear some of that stuff had not moved since the winter.

If you are talking about salon only hair color or perms and relaxers it's because consumer misuse can cause damage and injury so some products are made to be used by trained professionals(even though those professionals can mess up your hair too :look:) If you're referring to products like shampoos and conditioners that say that they are only guaranteed if you purchase it at a salon then that's usually just to make the product seem more exclusive than it actually is.
 
I am referring to relaxers...I mean is the strength stronger then what they market therfore we could mess our hair up if we didn't know what we were doing?

You have to look at the percentage of lye in the individual relaxer...I've worked in a salon as an assistant and basically it's the same exact amount of lye that you would find in a beauty supply store relaxer. The difference was in the size of the packaging(salon sizes are bigger) and the expiration dates in most cases. An old relaxer that's been sitting on a dusty shelf in a bss is not going to perform the same as a new relaxer.You have to pay close attention to expiration dates of products that are purchased in some stores. You also take the chance of buying a bootleg relaxer when you get it from an asian bss. Most salons are purchasing their products directly from the manufacturor.
 
What got me was the investigation showed there wasn't much of a price difference in most cases. In fact some of the prices were higher at CVS, Target, etc. So if that's the case, I might as well stick with the real deal at Trade Secret.

There was a beauty supply store that opened in an upscale neighborhood close to my city. They sold Aveda, Paul Mitchell and other similar products. They got raided and the agents took all the Paul Mitchell products off the shelves. They said they were counterfeit products. They never took the Aveda products. I used to get all my Aveda products from them until they went out of business.

I couldn't tell the difference but this was a long time ago, before I came on this board, and I didn't know what to look for.
