cornrowing your own hair...

Does anyone here cornrow their hair themselves? I really want to learn how to do it on my own hair. I know the basic technique, but for some reason my hair ends up too messy to even wear outside. Idk what im doing wrong. I want to get good enough so I can do different designs and such. Are there any tips that someone could give me? You dont even have to cornrow your own hair, just know how to cornrow in general...

I cornrow my own hair (I only had me to practice on). I would suggest taking your time and thinking about the direction you want the style to go in first. This will help you with parting (often, I section out larger parts of the design and keep them separated). As for the actual braiding, take your time, until you get more practice they're going to look pretty rough at first . Miis Celie used to put my hair to shame . Also take breaks...lots of them .

BTW: Mook (a member here) has a cornrowing video tutorial that's really helpful as well

I have to learn how to cornrow quick because my twa has grown into a MA (Medium afro) so fast, and I'm working out daily, I need to learn to corn row stat!!!

I cornrow my own hair and I am happy to help anyone who wants to learn.
I have posted 2 videos in my fotki (my videos section)
I know one is kinda dark and the other my hands get in the way sometimes.

I will be doing more but I need people to tell me what would make them better or more helpful. Soon I will do one with sound so that I can explain what I am doing.


One error I have realized people are making... Grabbing too much hair as you progress down the braid. Someone emailed me and said that they run out of hair at the bottom of the braid This means that you are feeding it in in chunks that are too large.

Also, I keep my hands very close to my scalp as I'm braiding it. This is what helps keep it from being too loose.

Cornrowing is a very valuable skill and I would teach everyone if I could.

I am also cosigning to this thread- my primary question is: how do you get it so tight at the start of the cornrow?

I noticed that I start off kinda rough, then the cornrow gets tighter as I get toward the middle of my head. I am probably grabbing too much hair at the start, but how do you work with so little hair at the beginning of the row?

And you start off the beginning like a regular braid.

I cornrow my son's hair all the time, Cornrowing my hair is not as easy to do, but I'm learning too. I got a manikin and practiced on that before I started on my son though. Thats how I learned how to do hair in general.

At Sally's it was 40 bucks. Get the discount card if you can. Online they sell them too. If you get human hair you can try chemicals and all sorts of things with them.

Thanks. It's taken me about 3 or 4 years for me to become as good as I am. I also suggest using a mannequin - its alot easier to learn this way, but for me it was easier to "feel" how to braid by practicing on my own hair

2, I twist them 2-3 times before I pick up the 3rd sprig.
3, work your way to the end of the braids.

It helps to use one of those rattail combs the ones that are metal at the rattail end. AND especially for the very first row, you need to secure the section that you're not braiding with a ponytail holder or scrunchie so that stray hairs don't wander over. You will need to use 2 mirrors to check the part. If you see that there is a hickup in the part then hold your finger right there. Then put the mirror down & grab your rattail and put it right where your finger is and fix the error. I almost always have to do this on the first two braids. Once I get the first 2 done, it is easier after that because the first path has been created.

I am subscribing. Mook I checked out your fotki and that is what made me decide to start wearing my hair in cornrows during the week. Do you wash your hair while in cornrows?I like to co wash daily and wandered if u every did it while in conrows. I like wearing them I need a lot of practice to get better. I do great on others but I need to improve on my hair.
