Hey Ladies,

Just wanted you to know that coconut milk is for real ! It seems watery, but the oil from the coconut is infused in it and boy oh boy it STICKs TO YOUR HAIR LIKE GLUE (in a good way!

). GREAT slip!

I used it as a pre-wash treatment, I used 1/4 of the can (b/c it slipped and most of it went down the drain

), w/honey and a little bit of Nature's Gate Herbal (I wanted something more noticeable on the ends). I was on the phone, so it probably sat for an hour, maybe a little more. When I rinsed I couldn't believe the slip

and today my hair doesn't feel overly oily or heavy in anyway, what it does feel like is UBER-Soft

I went to the Latin food section and found some brand that was made in the DR. It was around $3.50 and you could easily get 2-3 treatments (depending on hair length) per can.

I added coconut milk to my Suave Coconut conditioner. (I had it left over after my curry recipe)...WONDERFUL results.

I added coconut milk, honey and evoo to my ORS mayo and used this mixture to deep condition my daughters hair. I loved the results and so did she. When her hair air dried it was shiny and soft. Of course I put her back in cornrows the next day (we are both wearing braids for the summer). I did promise her that I would make this conditioner for her again.

I agree!! I tried this on my daughter's hair 2 weeks ago and the results were very softening. It works even better by adding EVOO, honey and any CO

Where can I find coconut milk?

You can find it at the health food store and Middle Eastern grocery stores. I keep what I don't use in the freezer.

I bought mine in a regular old grocery store! Check the Latino foods section &/or the Thai (or Indian) food sections as well.

I wonder if I should try buying an actual coconut and juicing the flesh....

Anyone ever tried that?

What is the best way to actually use this, as a pre-treatment or a deep-condition? Do you just pour it over your hair (cause isn't it a thin consistancy?)or spritz it in? How long do you leave it in before washing out for best results? I want to try this tonight. Does it just moisturize or does it also make your hair straight? (I remember the "whole milk hair straightener" thread)

I'm going to have to try this, too, since I have a whole can on my shelf. I remember reading somewhere that some people used to use coconut milk as a cleanser by itself before shampoo was invented. I wonder if it can be done like a natural conditioner wash, or would the hair feel sticky & gummy since most people use so many different products.

What brand are you using? Can I use the Goya brand or does it have additives? Thanks in advance!

I use goya brand and any other bands I can find in the cooking section

Oh Oh, I have an unopened can in my fridge left over from my baking binge during the holidays. I will HAVE to try some in my next conditioner wash. I currently add 1 teaspoon each jojoba & castor oil to the conditioner and now will have to add coconut milk (maybe 1/2 cup?). Sounds lovely . . .

I'll let yall know how it comes out.

I don't know about the straightening thing. I read on the hair recipe board that it has to be mixed w/lime and something else. I didn't notice it had straightened it any more, but I wasn't checking for it either, so I can't be certain. It weighs it down b/c it's so rich in oil, so maybe that's what makes it seem to stretch more.

I used it as a pre-wash treatment for conditioning purposes. On next use I plan to use it as a deep conditioner (which just might be tonight

) b/c it had such incredible slip. I wasn't expecting such grand results. I poured it over my hair the best I could. Bit by bit at a time, worked it in and added more. The conditioner and honey helped me capture more. It's runny so have a towel around your neck for excess. Shake the can a bit too b/c the coconut bits fall to the bottom of the can. I left it in for at least an hour w/o heat b/c that's what I do w/everything before washing. As a deep conditioner I'll use it w/heat for at least 20 min, though I don't really think it needs heat.

Can this Coconut Milk be used as a leave in?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't know. Maybe, but mixed w/o something else or diluted in distilled water. That's a good idea, b/c coconut oil isn't agreeing w/my hair at the moment.

Your hair doesn't feel sticky or gummy, but nicely laced in the oils. Despite the fact that I had products in my hair from the past few days, plus leave-ins and stuff.

It's perfect for a condition wash, but I think it's too oily to use truly as a cleanser. I want to shampoo, clarify w/ACV, then put it on, b/c my hair always feels a little parched after shampooing. My hair and I have gotten too accustomed to conditioner washes.

sengschick: the coconut milk in my fridge is from thialand and the ingredients are:

coconut extract
water
citric acid
sodium metabisulfite

Is this ok or should I be looking for something 100%? I use milk to make pastries and candies but never considered it for hair!

I don't think you can get 100% in a can, maybe in a grocery if they sell fresh products. I think all canned goods must have some preservative since they will have a shelf life. I think your can is fine. If it's food grade it's fine for hair, you want to avoid too many additives. The other ingredients listed are preservatives and there's just 2 (that's all mine had). You're all good... Go For It!!!

I am adding some pics to my album right now of this mornings condition was with coconut milk added. It came out great!

Do you all (as a pre-poo treatment) wet your hair then apply CM or do you just apply on dry hair and let it "marinate?"
