Nothing against Ms. Howse but I would of been more impressed with her if I had of never found the hair forum. She does have nice hair though. As far as her not cutting, what does she think happened to the relaxed hair if she didn't cut it??:lol: And this is a newbie question I guess but how hot does a pressing comb actually get? Some of these flat irons are giving them a run for their money so I don't get why she is so against them but supports flat ironing. I wonder what she thinks of Shima:lachen:

If i'd seen her hair 10 years ago I would've been like omg..beautiful and even glanced through her books and tried a product. Now i'm looking like..this chick got a nerve to have products and books for Sale:-/ :lachen:
yeah..hair boards have really spoiled and messed with me.

@ bolded: i think it depends on how long the hot comb is left on the stove. i do know that i've never suffered heat damage with a pressing comb. the one time i suffered major heat damage was from a flat iron at 450 degrees. this was self-inflicted when i thought my hair was indestructible. :look:

i think for most type 3 and 4 hair anything 350 or below used moderately shouldn't burn the hair straight. she should have specified the heat b/c trust a ceramic flatiron can be just damaging as a hot comb. :yep:
 
Just for the record even with age, Wanakee Pugh could come back in the hair care game and teach Ms. Howse a thing or two. Just saying.

Actually what I think she has against it but doesn't fully explain is that she also advocates not using grease. In one of her videos she talks about how grease was used with pressing combs as a lubricant. So in her mind, she won't use grease on her hair and doesn't see another product available for using a hot comb without it.

This of course makes me wonder if the real technique for hot combing without resulting in heat damage depends on not only technique but grease. I will have to research that issue.

^^^ Is the reason why I hesitate in calling anyone an expert. Typically that title is bestowed on degreed people or someone that has displayed a high level of expertise. But without that to fall back on in the hair game, its simply someone giving details on what was successful for them.

I like the way nonie has consistently said though (because I agree), she has offered some excellent tips over the years that has worked. That's something that no one can take away from her and her raggedy ends.

Cathy says the weakest point of the hair shaft is the point where the relaxed hair meets the natural new growth. I always thought the weakest point was the ends...can someone clarify which one is weaker??

Her statement has to be prefaced by the understanding that she is referring to a person that is either transitioning from relaxer hair to natural hair OR a stretching between relaxers.

You ends are the oldest part of your hair and more susceptible to splitting and damage for EVERYONE regardless of relaxer or natural hair.

It looks like she is going backwards with hair growth and maintenance.
 
She and her hair look beautiful to me. To me it honestly looks like she just didn't finish the hairstyle and curl the ends? But then again, her ends usually look crazy. I admire her for being a haircare pioneer, for me believing my hair could and would grow all started with her book, methods and products. They definitely helped me grow my eternally oscillating NL to SL hair to full, thick APL, before it broke off due to external circumstances. Good for her for using different marketing methods.

ETA: I no longer use her products but still believe in her methods.

The only thing about Cathy is that her ends have been looking like that since the late 80's on her website after she passed shoulder length. At that point she wasn't that old. I think her hair looks full and healthy up top just the last 3 inches are wispy.

I wasn't blown away by her hair myself, actually a lil shocked she was ok not trimming those ends.
Her under informed, overconfident demeanor was fun to watch. (But what do I know, I ♥ trainwrecks)
It is a new day in the game though, and ladies are coveting her (somewhat undeserved) position, so I get the hate.

Unpopular opinion: her hair doesn't look that great even if you disregard this board. Isn't she APL/BSL (I need to go back to Youtube)? I see that length--maybe not BSL so much, but definitely APL-- every once in a while and in real life, women with nice-ish hair don't have ends like that because they get them trimmed every 6 weeks because their stylists tell them to. :look:

Anyway, Dr. Howse has made me paranoid.
