Cassia (Clear Henna)

I used cassia once. Personaly, I didn't notice much of a difference and it was a big mess to apply. I got it from Catherine's site (can't remember the name just now - mehandi.com?) and just followed the instructions she gave. It was a lumpy mess.

But I'm caught up in the henna hype, so....I am considering trying it again and using a different recipe. I really don't want to change my hair color, so I was thinking about using a henna/indigo mixture to produce dark brown hair. Does anyone know if I could avoid coloring my hair by preparing and applying the henna before the color develops?

I went to mehandi.com to buy some cassia and it suggested 500g if you have long hair that's $41.50:eek: Is this how much I have to use everytime? If so I will have to pass. Any sugesstions?

My hair is shoulder length (but not thick). I think I paid less than $20 for 200g and got two applications out of it.

Can someone help me understand exactly what clear henna is supposed to do? Is it a thickner, a shiner?

It conditions and strenghtens your hair. After use, your hair strands become stronger and the hair thickens up over time.

Does anyone know when is the best time to use henna?

I'm about 5 months post relaxer and I'm wondering if it'll be ok to use the henna now or if I should wait until after I relax in December?

I started out using Cassia and have used the Cassia for 5 times now. It definitely conditions my hair making it feels stronger.

I still wanted to see if there was a difference with the henna over the Cassia but I was scared to color my hair. Anyway, lastweek I tried the henna. I mixed it with hot water and amla oil and put it in my hair 30 mins after mixing it because I did not want to wait for the dye to release. I have to give the henna my hands down because the shine and condition I got was no where there with the Cassia. I was shocked at the difference in the way my hair felt also, the Cassia did not stop my shedding but one use of the henna did. My hair color did not change with the henna but when I am in the sun, I see a faint glimpse of reddish color but it is so faint and beautifully disguise. I plan to use the henna (30 mins after mixing) every 4 weeks and continue with the Cassia every week. Cassia is better than nothing but henna is much better.

That sounds like a plan! I was thinking of doing something like that.

It is recommended to use henna 2-3 weeks prior to relaxing and the same time after. However, I did a henna treatment lastweek, relaxed yesterday and did a Cassia treatment today. My hair is perfectly fine.

That's the answer I was looking for, especially the bold...Thanks Ivanay!

Hi,
I'm new here, but was wondering where you ordered your henna from? How much henna did you use in your hot water/alma oil recipe? I'm curious because I've been reading how henna does wonders for your hair, but I don't want to change the color of my hair. It's brown w/ red already in it and I don't want it to get too red.

Thanks!

Hi..., I ordered mine from www.hennaforhair.com. I ordered 100g of henna and used half the pk with a little bit of amla oil (did not measure it) and hot water. I didn't measure how much water I used, but enough to make the paste a consistent relaxer-like texture. My hair is black and the treatment did not change the color but I could see a faint reddish highlight in the sun. I do not know if it will change your color significantly because your hair is already red. If I were you, I would try the Cassia treatment first and add a little henna in there (probably 4 tablespoon) and later on when you are more comfortable with the procedure, gradually try the henna by itself. If you use the henna before the dye releases, I don't think you should have a problem. Also, it might depends on the henna you use because I was reading somewhere that someone used a different brand of henna and the dye was released within the first half hour, coloring her hair red.

Thanks for the suggestion! My hair is still in a sew in but I can't WAIT until I get unweaved. I have to keep reminding myself to take baby steps, so I'll start with the cassia and gradually add a little henna.

Thanks again

OK, I ordered some cassia and plan to try it very soon. A couple of questions:

1. Do you apply it to "clean" hair, or is it OK to use a few days after your shampoo?

2. Does it need to be washed out with shampoo, or can you simply rinse it out and follow up with conditioner?

3. Has anyone mixed it with conditioner? I've seen recipes that mix the cassia with yogurt, oil, or honey....

Thanks in advance ladies!!:)

preciousjewel,

1. Do you apply it to "clean" hair, or is it OK to use a few days after your shampoo? I think it is amatter of preference. I prefer to do it on clean wet hair. Many ladies do it on dry hair. I use so much moisturizer between washes, I want to use my cassia on a clean slate.

2. Does it need to be washed out with shampoo, or can you simply rinse it out and follow up with conditioner? I use shampoo after. Actually, I rinse and shampoo twice using ashower comb to really get it all out. As I get closer to touch up time, it is harder to rinse and my shower comb helps with that

3. Has anyone mixed it with conditioner? I've seen recipes that mix the cassia with yogurt, oil, or honey.... There is athread on that. Someone mixed it in with conditioner. That is agood idea. I just use yogurt and oil.

Thanks HoneyDew!

ITA with what you said about using the cassia on a "clean slate". I moisturize 2x/day and use jojoba oil, so I think I'd prefer to use it on freshly washed hair so it can penetrate.

I think I'm going to experiement with a cassia/amla powder/yogurt (for protein)/honey/water mixture....we'll see what happens.

I am interested in trying amla powder one day. I have so much other stuff I want to use it down 1st.

What is the amla good for again?

I ordered the $1 amla powder sample from Mehandi.com. According to their site, amla conditions hair, adds gloss, enhances curls, and cleanses the scalp. It also apparently helps darken the color of regular henna.

Very good and informative thread I may give henna mixed with cassia like( Mystic suggestion) a try:babyb: .....next week

What brand of cassia is everyone using? I can get Rainbow cassia locally, but I'm kind of spoiled now after using my Dulhan henna, the Rainbow just has too many branches and twigs that get stuck in my hair. :nono:

Pat, try it again. My first time was a lumpy mess. I didn't think it helped much either. The second time, I used EVOO and made it a tad thinner. I also used a ziplock bag over a bowl--I'll post pics of this in my album soon. The rinse out was still messy, but with much better conditioning results.

Some ladies have posted that henna relaxes their hair texture some. Does cassia have the same effect on the texture?

I used Cassia mixed with amla, brahmi, maka, evco, amla oil and elastaqp dpr11 with a dollop of silk elements moisture conditioner and a few tblspns of h20...left on overnight (about 6 hours)....woke up to relaxer-type results.

I. Am. So. Happy.

14 month transitioner is in love with this mix...will try this again..hair is thicker, fuller, shinier and just feels so dang good...oh, this is even better than caramel without the drippy-drip..

I don't get why people have to use a thickener. Why not just add less water? Or add the water little by little until you get the right consistency. I've got a vid of me making a cassia/ water mix ... I'll try and load it up from my phone ... it's nothing fancy though.

Hey BBB it's the amla powder that gives that relaxed feeling in the hair. I notice it too when I just do an ayurveda cowash with it and other powders - no henna. I have never tried cassia and prpbably never will, because I love how the henna colors my grays and when I add amla powder to it, it darkens my hair even further.

I typically use indigo, but haven't for a while because I'm out of it. I need to replenish my stash of ayurveda products now. My amla, shikakai, bhringraj and hibiscus petal powders and most of oils are starting to run low. I will wait until I need to get a full batch of stuff one time and then order.

is anybody still using the ayurvedic powders with the cassia? I have been wanting to try this but didn't know whether to use them together or seperate.
