Can I ask a dumb question? (Part II)

Ok I have been here for a while and have been wanting to ask this but I think it is so obvious I might get roasted:

1. How do you achieve an afro? Not how to grow one but after you wash then what? Please forgive my ignorance but is it just for certain hair types?

ETA: I see some beautiful ones here and in pics and I wanna try it but...ok lemme wait for responses:look:

After you've completed your cleansing/conditioning regimine, apply some type of leave in moisture.
Allow the hair to air dry.
Pick with an afro pic(k). (Metal or wood seem to be best.)
Enjoy!

*For Gawd's sake...we gotta give mo' powah to the people...*

I'm afraid of heat so, I'll ask:

If I blow dry my hair on cool do I still risk "heat" damage (I'm natural, btw) and if I blow dry on cool do I still need to spray a heat protectant?

Ok I have what I think my be a dumb question but here goes:

I was sitting under my hooded dryer, drying my hair and thought to myself, hmmm......Should I air dry since I have this coconut oil on my hair....I told ya'll this was a dumb question but:

I know some folks use coconut oil to fry foods and what not, so am I "frying" my hair sitting under the dryer with it?

I'm not sure about the the hair dryer but there have been discussions about frying concerning coconut oil and flat ironing.

You risk heat damage anytime you use heat. Blow drying on cool (no heat) wouldn't cause heat damage (permanent loosening/straightening of texture).

But, I know blowdrying in the past (with the attached comb or with a regular brush/comb) caused too much breakage for me. You may want to try pinkskates' tension blow dry method found in this thread:

I assume the dryer doesn't get nearly as hot as a pan on the stove. If it does, then you should worry. Otherwise, I'm sure it's fine.

Is it better to do a heavy protein treatment, like Aphoghee 2 step, a few weeks before a relaxer or after? or maybe before and after?

I'm getting my relaxer in 2 weeks and was wondering what would be best...

I read Sistaslick's article. I will look and see if I can find the link. Based upon that I did: a protein tx 1 wk before, a protein tx prior to neutralizing when relaxing, and a protein tx 1 wk afterwards

Here are two articles that helped me out:

Thanks! I will take a look at these. I do remember reading one of her articles before when I first joined LHCF, I think it was about regimine building and it was pretty helpful :)

How long can you store relaxer? My Mizani BB for Fine/Colored Hair has been stored for at least 9 months. Should I throw out the remainder and re-purchase?

Can someone explain what a reconstructor is and does....how is this different than a deep conditioner?

Someone else can correct me if I am wrong but a believe a reconstructor is a protein deep conditioner vs a moisturizing one. Now I know I need help with this part but I believe it repairs and fills holes in your hair caused by breakgage ??

I hope that this wasn't asked before (probably not, because it's such a dumb question)

Okay, so I put on my phony pony... I put the top and bottom combs ... I pull the strings ... now what do I do with that knob thingy? I can't stick it inside if I'm going to pull it. I feel so dumb right now. I pinned it under the pony hair with some bobbie pins. Y'all don't laugh. :-(

Me Next!! Me Next!!

Will your hair feel dry if your hands are dry? Is your hair prone to being dryer if its in braids (natural hair no extra)?

I have to wash my hands all the time at my job and they get really dry and cracked sometimes if I can't get to the lotion bottle quickly enough. So I touched my hair the other day and it felt really dry.

I thought protective styles (braids, twist) allowed the hair to retain more moisture?

TIA

Where do you find coconut milk in the store?

In the international lane, it is near where they sell Hispanic food (Goya brand) and near the Asian food (Thai Kitchen). Ive have also seen in an African market.

IMO Thai Kitchen is better than Goya for the hair and for cooking.
