Can a roller set be done on natural hair???

What is your technique? TIA.

I followed macherie's instructions that you can find in the link below.

I followed it pretty much to a tee except I rolled the hair upwards (at least the Mohawk, the side's are a bit difficult). Use a really good leave-in (I love super skinny serum by Paul Mitchell) & a good heat protector (I use Redken heat glide) & most importantly have your hair sobbing wet, I always have a spray bottle with (cold) water by my side. The wetter the easier and the better the results. Also I dry with heat (I might let it air dry the last twenty minutes though)

these are pictures of how it looks (on macherieamore):

Yes, of course. After our fortnightly wash as children, my mom used to give us "bangs" by putting a roller at the front of our soaking wet hair, and allowing it to dry. It would come out well. Would last a couple of days.

And she didn't even use any serums or setting lotion or anything like that. Just a bit of grease when it was dry.

I'm sure using your modern products you could do your entire head and get the curls to last quite long.

ETA: bigdeelight your rollerset and colour are gorgeous.

When my hair gets longer I will be trying the curl formers! I have seen great results from other people who used it.

Forgive me if this is an off question, but why roller set if you are going to flat iron anyway. I heard roller-setting the hair is healthier, but flat ironing can cause damage. BTW, I tried my first roller set, I liked it but I didnt' stay under the dryer long enough, now I know better, Thanks for all the replies ladies!

You can rollerset instead of blowdrying before flat ironing. If I flat iron my air dryed hair it looks a hot mess. It has to be stretched out w/the blowdryer or rollerset first. My rollersets never look as good as the one posted though. I think they turn out better on finer texture hair. My hair is kinky and coarse, my roller sets looks like a fro and end up being pretty pointless unless I"m doing something wrong.

ITA. Mine turn out looking like a fro too. I only rollerset to bun or do a braidout on already stretched hair.

Well, looks like I really messed up with this roller setting, I sat under my horrible dryer too long, and My strands got fried, geez I can't win, with this hair trouble. :nono:

Aww don't get discouraged. Mine looked a mess at first too

Here's some pics of my better ones :

Do you guys sit under the drier or air dry your roller set?

Well, I sat under the dryer and granted I don't have the best dryer but I have never seen more damage on my hair from doing it. I will never do it again. I have fried hard strands (structurally damaged strands) from allowing the hot heat to penetrate the top of my head in one spot for 45 minutes with the rollers in it. Never again. Its not worth it. :wallbash:

The pics are so on point for a learner like myself. But girl, your hair looks bone straight (IMHO); mine is soooo curly, I can't wait to see what it's gonna do.

Will attempt this Saturday night when I get in and am relaxed.

Thanks so much.

I hope so because Im transtioning and I want to continue with my weekly rollersets! I guess once I become fully natural I will have to change thing up and fnd better products. Thanks! I was getting a little discouraged.

I flat ironed and roller set my hair last night.

Looked great when I left the house and was a fro by the time I got to the bus stop.

Had to put it in a ponytail.

Yes ma'am you can!Rollersets have been my saving grace.I do them before I flat iron beacuse blowdrying doesn't do anything for me but fry my strands and make my hair bigger which defeats the purpuse.I don't like to airdry because I prefer for hair to be as sleek as possible before straightening. It helps me use less heat and my hair is alot healthier and sleeker.I won't lie and say it'll turn out perfect the first time because it prob. won't.

yep, u will b alright....hang n there....basically itz trial & error...u gotta come up with wat workz best 4 u....even tho tipz r good & helpful, but if they dont work when u do them, then u gotta find out wat doez...good productz will definitely help with ur natural hair...start takin notez now...lol...:grin:keep hope alive!!!...good luck on ur transitioning....& keep uz posted!!!

Don't get discouraged. After you find the right combo of products and get the technique down you'll be fine.

Oh I'm sorry, I should have clarified that, that is not me in the pics. That's macherieamore. I posted them because I use her tutorial and do mine the same way.

Yeah, girl....I was heated! Couldn't last 10 minutes. :wallbash:

Someone suggested Beyond Straight, so I ordered some of that since they had a trial size for 5 bucks.

I might try the SMB if that doesn't work.

I need to post some stuff of the product exchange, I have so many items that don't work for me.
