Can a roller set be done on natural hair???

So are you all rollersetting while your hair is wet? Or you flat ironing and then doing a rollerset? If you are rollersetting while wet how is your hair coming out so straight?

Wet.I pull the hair taut, roll, and clip in place with clips.Leave ins and setting lotions can be used to smooth the hair and prepare it for the roller.

I might try the SMB if that doesn't work.

MzLady, get some from e-Bay and maybe save a lil $. I see, like me, you're getting a little arsenal of beauty supply products. That's where I got my SMB from? Think I'll try this umm, tomorrow when I get in. If I do, I'll need to figure out what to do with the hair when I sleep because I'll be doing this before going to bed.

i am surprised no one suggested a ponytail rollerset! i know pokahontas does them; look in her fotki for a how-to. i think this method is easier for naturals and i *plan* on doing it this weekend, so if i do i will post pics. i have gotten banding down and can get my hair straight that way, so i know it can be done with wet hair, a leave-in and maybe a denman and/or smaller toothed comb. i used a denman to do the banding.

Yes it can be done. I do it all the time. Sometimes when I do it myself the hair doesn't lay as neatly as it did when I was relaxed, but I use bigger bobby pins and make sure to keep my hair very wet. For me personally my rollerset hair looks better with my natural hair cuz it looks fuller and has more body.

I'm looking forward to experimenting with roller sets this fall and winter now that I have more length. It didn't turn out so bad on my TWA last winter:

It can definitely be done. I haven't been experimenting since the weather has turned hot, however I was very successful doing this earlier in the year.

My hair type is primarily 4A/4B, cottony texture, definitely not silky (only the bottom half of my head is a silkier texture). I had a lot of family members in shock when they saw my curlformers set(I get straighter hair using the skinner curlers, blue and green). It actually look like relaxed hair. I later experimented with flexirods and then the mesh rollers with pins. All were successful, however my sets did not last beyond 3 or 4 days. I did purchase the moisture block product, but have not done any styles yet to experiment with the product. I want to add, my best results were from using the curlformers, and I think that's because it didn't take as much effort for me to get my roots tight, the curlformers did the work for me.

The key is, as someone stated earlier is to have your hair SOAKING wet. This is the most important thing that I have learned....or your hair will frizz. I have to use some sort of 'setting' product, I've used MJ curly pudding, fantasia gel, lottabody and the Silk Elements foaming setting lotion (on separate trials). They all worked well, but nothing gave me the firm hold I like, but that could be because I always added a creamy leavein first. That probably decreased the holding power.

You'll also need to roll your hair in very thin sections if your hair is of a similiar hair type (coarse 4's) and also be very taunt when you get to your roots. Your hair will look dry how it does wet. So, believe me if you roll it taunt and smooth it will dry that way.:yep: I also believe in drying the set some if not the entire time under heat.

Keep trying, and believe me, I didn't think it was possible myself. I read some very discouraging posts concerning rollersetting kinkier hair type initially, but decided to buy some curlformers when I saw that people were having success with those. Rollersets were the one thing that made me miss my relaxer (natural for over 5 years now). I was escatic to find out that those were possible on natural hair, especially on my hair type.

So true! And if your hair starts to dry a little bit, spray some water on that section or your rollerset won't come out as nice. Once I dry my hair I will normally flatiron (with a serum of course). In the fall I'm going to rollerset once a week instead of my regular wash-n-go's.

Great advice ladies! I am texlaxed with ALOT of texture so I still follow all of these steps. I used the previously listed tutorials instructions though and have found that that gives me best roller set. I tried one time to do an air dry rollerset and it was HORRIBLE. I have to use heat. I don't dry my hair completely because I hate dryers but its 85-90% dry and then I leave the rollers in overnight. In the morning I flat iron my roots and I am done for the week. I had to texlax my hair because I work out and sweat in my hair and I would have had a MzLady scenario without doing it this way. However when I was completely natural my rollersets would last about a week, 2 weeks with a good flat iron.

yay, great minds think alike! i am sitting under the dryer right now with this experimental ponytail rollerset...i will let you all know how it goes. i tried to keep my hair soaking wet but i expect that at least one of the curls will be frizzy. if i need to go over something lightly with a flat iron i may do it.

Thanks so much! I will try this when I do rllerset at home.

Does the size of the roller matter though? My stylist uses 2-1/2# pink JetSet Ez-Grip rollers and they get my hair straight, but I was wondering if I should use the smaller purple for curlier results.

Mine, last night, was a disaster. My fault. For one, I didn't allow my hair to dry (who knew?) Well, I did when I woke this a.m., took rollers down and hair was wet, duh. The roots were crinkly (NOW I see what the sistahs was talking about). For my hair to be so short, boy was it "fun" extending my arms alllll the way trying to get this stuff on a roller. Man, or sistaahs, it was a mess, a hot mess I tell ya. I got so flustrated, that I just went in the restroom at the assembly I was at this a.m. and put my head in the sink to wet it and get my natural curls back .

I've ordered Macherie's DVD. I'll try this once more. I also have the MaxiGlide, I'll try that a couple times. If they don't work, not a problem, Jehovah God gave me healthy curly hair, I'll simply be satisfied 'cause I tell you the crap I went through between the hours last night and the fiasco this morning,, "Oh no, she replied!"

P.S. It's been a while since I roller set. But, I can tell you this . . . when I did have a relaxer, forty thousand years ago, it did NOT turn out like this. I am inclined to think all this roller settin' is fo relaxed haiya.

Okay im really interested in this I have a Few Questions.
What Type of Rollers are You using?
What are you applying to your hair Before going under the dryer?
Do you use a heat protector??

I plan on Ordering Macherie's DvD too.

All help Would Be Appreciated.

ok...so my rollerset came out GREAT! i cant do a regular rollerset to save my life (last time i tried i was still transitioning, but maybe i didnt have enough tension) but apparently i can do the ponytail rollerset well. for those of you having trouble with the regular rollerset...i IMPLORE you to try this one first!!!

i DC'd with an old bottle of pantene, cowashed it out with trader joe's nourish spa, put 2 quarter sized amounts of sabino MB on my hair, and put in about 9-10 ponytails, smoothing the roots with my denman. then i smoothed out the ponytail with a rattail comb, re-wetting it with water if i needed to, and rolled it up. sat under the hood dryer (just my regular pink ion one) for an hour and some change then unrolled it. i liked it so much i kept the curls in and only straightened my roots a little with pinkskates' tension blowdrying method and later a flat iron on LOW, even though i could have skipped this step. here are some pics of how it went; the last pic is the puff i ended up pulling my hair into. i will post the rest in my fotki when i open it on the 13th.

The pics are so on point for a learner like myself. But girl, your hair looks bone straight (IMHO); mine is soooo curly, I can't wait to see what it's gonna do.

Will attempt this Saturday night when I get in and am relaxed.

Thanks so much.

LL
