Welcome,

Sundiva we are on the case...will post inthe evening. I gotta make myself go to sleep! Hey, I did notice that u use protein regularly...are you pretty confident about that? A lot of no-chems do not do that so very often, or if they do, are certain to do it w/a moisturizer...that's what I was taught.

TTYS,

Niiq

No, Im not sure:blush: I have been reading alot and when I put my regimen together it was purely experiemental. Normally, I do use either the Profectiv growth lotion or the pantene pro-v as moisturizers and will seal with the oil (protein). This is only what I think I have learned and understood to be an aid for growth. Do you think this is helpful? If you or any naturals can give me assistance and help I welcome it.

Oops, a little over zealous with answering the questions. I just wanna say hello to everyone! I've been lurking for awhile and have learned alot already.

Muse!

Welcome,

We can all relate more or less to something about our hair giving us a challenge! Some folks tangle really bad, some have really fine hair, some people have very dense (me as in concrete head). Even my hubbie who has 3a (big waves, looks straight to me) swears in almost tears that his hair is ahem, hard to comb at times.

BUT! This is where the curly haired people be! I know my reality about my hair was totally altered here. Hold on to your hats muse, cuz it can really be exciting to fall in love w/ what YOUR hair can do.

I used to think that my nape was the coarsest until I stopped relaxing it ,moisturized it for a year and saw VOILA, it was the most delicate, finest, straightest patch of hair I own. I was melting it then frying it all along.

Stay tuned lemme know exactly what you need I'll send u stuff, PM me too!

Niiq
i JUST started relaxing again after having been natural for 10+ years. Primarily wearing braids or twists during that time and knowing NOTHING about what to do to retain the growth I was getting.

I relaxed it because I knew I was going to leave it out and didnt want to deal with it being natural AND out

Protein...?
*Dumb question*
But is that pre-pooing
with eggs?
And is glycerin
is that sticky?
I'm going to try today..
to order it..
I like purchasing new
products....:yep:

Hey Skiggie,

Welcome,

Have u tried making your own daily spray with glycerin and water to retain moisture? You have to play around with the mix to get it right but it really does become a staple when u r transitioning. If youre not doing heat, u WILL b reaching your goal in a matter of time if u can strike the protein/moisture balance. We hear u and we all will help out,

Protein can be from different sources, egg is one way to do it. Protein is not the same as pre pooing with egg but is one way to do it. Whatever conditioners u use need to be good for you. Some contain more protein than others. Most do follow a protein type of conditioner with a moisturizing type or their hair will get hard.

Glycerin generally is mixed with water! Some put a little bit in a bottle, some put more. Your hair will let u know. There are loads posts & tutorials out there about them.

1: Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?

I've always wanted to grow my hair out but never had the patience for it. The longest my hair has been is APL in 10th grade. I then cut it shoulder length and have kept it cut somewhat short ever since. BC in college but texturized shortly after ward and moved back to relaxer without really thinking it through. I currently have CBL hair and want WL by 12/2010 (APL by summer 2009).

2: What's your hair doing now? What do u use? What's your reggie (regimen)? What's in your stash? What's your style?

Since joining I stick to protective styles. I've also jumped on a lot of bandwagons and I'm figuring out what works. My hair does not like to be wet so b4 LHCF I would wash/ blow dry and flat iron once a week like clockwork. I never kept track of relaxers but now i am in my second stretch (1st was 15wks). This site has also taught me about protein- moisture balance. My hair b4 was way over moisturized and turned into hair soup when wet. I also read ingredients now.

Regimen/Reggie:

- Co wash as needed. with pantene or HMC (has sulfur in it btw)
- Protein trmt as needed- ion reconstructor, effective care trtmt, henna protein pac, or silicon mix (nasty smell but great results)
- shampoo with sunsilk hydracare (Love it!) or suave clarifying poo as needed
- Roller set then wrap to dry (my flat iron misses me) prep with super skinny serum and garnier leave in
- Apply MT, aloe, honey, EVOO, infusium, carrot oil mix to scalp 3x week
- Just purchased a wig for late into the stretch
- Tried a lye relaxed and burned the crap out of my scalp, after all that I was still underprocessed so I'm back to my fav for my fine strands- JFM

Styling: bun/ wig

Heat commitment: little to no heat, Dominican Blowouts for special occasions

Stretching goal: 3-4 relaxers per year; long term- 2/yr

Albums? Links? none yet.

Other notes about me:
I am currently recovering from 2 huge setbacks. I had my hair blowdried from wet in Colombia (yes, the country) I thought it would be like a DR blowout but was sadly mistaken. My hair was ripped out in clumps if I had the time to do my hair myself I would of stopped the beautician :wallbash: but I had a wedding to attend and a bride to style and only a few hours to do it in. :nono: That happened over thxgiving 08.

Later I braided up my hair trying to make to a late Feb/Mar relax date for my sis' wedding. I did not detangle after taking out the braids and was left with a nest after shampooing. :wallbash: This time it was me ripping my hair out after about 2 hours of trying to detangle the wet mess.

Apparently, bad things happen to my hair for the sake of weddings.

My hair is very thinned out and uneven but the new growth is healthy so i'm not sweating it. it's only hair after all! When i reach a little beyond APL I will trim blunt and grow from there.

Welcome Manter,

Oooohwee. I tend to hate weddings myself. My braids where not right when I got married. And my signifying Mother in law. I digress. I can't blow fry my hair either. At all. And every beautician (I use that word on purpose) wants to prove me wrong. So now I am learning how to grow out a busted nape from vAPL. I have to do an airdry/bonnet dry then a press, a hard one at that, or my naps get real scared. I gotta knock them out silky straight.

So I can relate. Welcome. I like your plan to trim later. How are you styling it (hope I did not miss it)?

Hair state/length: I don't know about these 3 and 4 numbers, not sure what they mean? That info is on this site I'm sure, but haven't found it yet. So essentially my hair is in relatively tight curls all over except a couple of weird sections on the top layer in front that are somewhat straighter. Length blown dry is bra strap.

Used a relaxer since around 11 yrs old, started going to lower strength relaxers (just for me) in college and about 5 years ago with my hairstylist's support decided to go natural. Started getting presses (with a hotcomb...ouch!! :nono:) and noticed my hair not looking healthy. Left that stylist and tried Robin at Too Groovy in Atlanta. That was my ticket to healthy hair! She worked with me, cutting it off slowly while I grew out the relaxed part of my hair. Now it's totally grown out and has been for a couple of years. Healthiest it's ever been. My hair used to never grow longer than my shoulders...I really thought my hair just would not grow longer...but since going natural it's just kept growing and growing! :drunk:

In the summer I tend to wash and go - pulling it back into a ponytail with a puff or a bun (wet). Before this site I would only use regular shampoo and conditioner (Sunsilk or Suave - yeah I'm cheap) and just leave in the conditioner for my wash and go. Worked okay but frizzed out eventually (after a day or so). In the winter I would get it blown dry/flat ironed at the salon every 2-3 weeks. So now I have been inspired to try new things. I bought an FHI Runway iron and FHI ion blow dryer. Also bought the professional sit under dryer everyone on here recommended...I think it's called Pibbs? Anyway, I just got it delivered a couple of days ago and haven't opened it yet. I also bought a regular sit under ion hard dryer from Sally's for another option. I recently bought lots of Miss Jessie's products during their BOGO sale (thanks to LHCF!) and have been trying those. They work nicely but I looked at a few photo journals on here and decided to try Kinky and Curly also. WOW! That works great for me. I was even able to wear my hair down in the back, up on the top to work!!! Just washed, conditioned, left in the Knot Today conditioner and added Kinky Curly Creme. Diffused for about 5 minutes and I've been rockin that for about 3 days with no more products needed! I've stared twisting and sitting under my Sally dryer and then taking them out for the wavy look...love it. I'm starting to get comments like - I wish I could get all of the hairdos you have...you always wear different styles and they look nice! This is heaven for a girl who rocked the bun to the back for literally one full year...

^^ wow did I write that much ? :lachen:

OK moving on...

Goal length: Mid back - don't think I want waist length, my hair is too thick
Regimen/Reggie: Umm, experimenting like crazy right now. But wash about 1x or 2x/week and always have some moisturizer on my hair. Tie my hair up at night more now since being on this site. Bought a hair net from Sallys that is easier for me to keep on and wear while I sleep. haven't used my FHI iron/dryer yet, so I'm gonna bust those out soon and try to recreate my Too Groovy results.

Styling: see my ramblings above

Heat commitment: I am okay with heat maybe once a week - max. I don't know if I should count my diffusing as heat? That would still be once a week I think...

Stretching goal: if applies: don't know what this means

Posting goals: well, I guess my initial goal is to just post more so I can learn more and bond with the ladies of LHCF!

Albums? Links? I put one pic in some album, can't find it now...lol. I need to take pics of my hair, really don't have any close up enough to see it well.

What exactly qualifies a person as a "newbie" ?

K, soooo I'm definitely a newbie, I joined today, but I must say, u ladies do NOT sound like newbies!!!! Ur jumping right in with all the advanced reggies and lingo... my head is spinning!!!! :nono: Anyhow, I at least know that I have a lil over SL 3B natural hair. I would like for it to be APL by graduation (5/8/09) if possible. My ultimate goal is WL, and Lord knows how long that will take! So, Im sorry I dont have a lot to offer u ladies at the moment, but I do have some questions for u so-called-newbies:yawn:

1) what the heck are these "powders" every one is talking about? I hear they provide thickness, if so, I'm interested! Are they safe, affordable, easily acessible, and easy to use?

2) I REALLY want to try OCT or MT after all the great things I"ve been hearing!!! I can only really afford the MT right now and I hear that it possibly makes the hair hard or dry... what can I mix it with that wont weigh down my hair and make it oily and limp to combat that. Also, what kind of garlic should I start taking to keep the shedding at bay? Also, Ive heard many say applying this product to the scalp causes natural hair to "revert"... am I correct in assuming I cant use this product while wearing my hair straight unless I want curly roots (looking all crazy :spinning:)?

3) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE suggest reggies!!! But keep in mind that I am "self-styling challenged" :wallbash:

Thanks so much for starting this thread and helping to get me started ladies! Who knows, maybe I'll be flowing to my butt and hading out advice myself b4 too long! :)

Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
Ive been relaxed all my life or sometimes natural but under a sew-in. I tried last year to start a HHJ but failed because of my frequent relaxers and use of heat(it was styling over health:nono:) I took down what i hope is to be my last sew-in EVER and decided to take on this journey relaxed. I realised that i underprocessed but i am loving my hair riight now!!. All i want is to maintain the health of my hair, TLC my ends maintain the hair at the nap that i never had(used to be a broken mess)

What's your hair doing now?
Neck lenght, Textlaxed with lots of wash and goes.

What do u use?
aphogee 2min and green tea keratin spray, yes to carrots mask, HE condish, elasta qp mango butter, EVOO mainly

What's your reggie (regimen)?
Wash once a week(and DC), Cowash maybe 5 days a weeks, use heat once a week(which is way less then what i used before lhcf!)

WHAT do U need to know?
I need to know how to save my ends. Or itll get trimmed once my hair gets a little longer

Hey I'm defiantly a newbie i just jooined today and have already learned so much
Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals? Lets see I at one time had very long hair but that was when i was younger and around 7th grade my mother insisted that i cut it off so that it would be easier to manage etc.. i can't blame her it was a lot of work but i'm older now and i want my hair the length it was my ideal length would be bra lenth which is my goal but anything longer is fine with me you can't tell in my pic but my hair goes almost to my shoulders, I have been natural for about a year now with minimal to no direct heat.
2: What's your hair doing now? What do u use? What's your reggie (regimen)? What's in your stash? What's your style? Right now i usually but it into a small pony tail which i'm hoping will change lol or into a small bun. Or i pin the sides back some and leave the back out. I used to use clips but my hair would slide out of them to easily my hair is also extremely thick. My regiment is sketchy to say the least lol i try to wash it every 3 wks and deep condition but i don't always deep condition especially when i'm feeling lazy i know tsk tsk. I also apply moustirizer and use olive oil umm I also us silk elements moisturizing treatment after washing and conditioning. I also use the apogee protein treatment but like i said i don't allways stick to my routine especially when i'm tired so i'm hoping setting some goals and having witnesses lol will make me stick to it and help me find an even better regiment.
3: WHAT do U need to know? I need to find a way to incorporate hair care into a busy schedule and to find out what types of products to use. Not to mention that i easily become discouraged so i hope that this will keep in for the long haul.
4. What forums do u like? I really like this one all of the pictures are so beautiful and the information is so informative.
Im going to try to post weekly otherwise i'll get fustrated and im gonna add a pic of my hair from behind so i can see my progress BSL here i come lol

Hair state/length: I have thick and dense natural 4a/b hair, I believe. It is currently a TWA, in between ear length and neck length.
Goal length: I am really bad about planning out length, but for this year I hope I can get to shoulder length. (Helps that I have a really short neck, no? :lachen:) Ultimately, I would like for my hair, when straightened/stretched, to reach the middle of my back.
Regimen/Reggie:
I wash with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner whenever my hair feels like it should be done, which usually translates to every four or five days. I also make sure to pre-poo with a mixture of honey, olive oil, and a very thick moisturising conditioner, which I usually leave on 2-3 hours. I detangle with a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in my hair and only try to pat it dry enough to stop it from dripping. I immediately add a water-based moisturiser and the last of my BT (using a comb) and let it air dry. Every morning before I go out I spray Biolage Daily Leave-In Tonic and use a pick through it. Every night I add more of the water-based moisturiser. Once a month I use a clarifying shampoo and then deep-condition it with the ORS Replenishing Pak.

This is all very temporary, as I am finding better products and techniques for my hair. I will be replacing the shampoo and moisturiser and also deep-conditioning every time I wash it. I am also going to try to manipulate it less and less, switching the comb for a Denman and generally trying to only use my fingers to style it. The only issue is having the money to do all this, haha.
Styling: It is just a TWA for now. There is nothing I can really do with it!
Heat commitment: Eventually I would like a bonnet dryer to use for deep conditioning, but at this point, I have no use for a blow dryer or flat iron/other straightening tools, so I do not really have a commitment here.
Stretching goal: if applies:
Posting goals: I think I would like to try posting biweekly about my progress, and also post a review for anything new that I try.
Albums? Links? Sorry, at this point I am totally camera-avoidant. Maybe one day!

History: I know I have always had my hair pressed or permed, since I was a little girl. When I turned eighteen I had most of it chopped off and started growing an afro, just because I thought afros were cool. I hated perms and everything that goes with having permed hair, but I was always taught it was a necessity. Once I started getting it permed, it (of course) never reached past my shoulders, but I was (of course) taught that, unless you were mixed, there is no way your natural hair could get any longer, and any black girl I see with long hair had to have bought it. Even still, every summer and winter I would get most of my natural hair cut off by barbers who always swore the most they would cut off is an inch to help reshape the 'fro (sigh). I always ended up with hair not even as long as my fingernail! My natural hair used to be in between shoulder length and armpit length when stretched, and right now I am trying to get back there, and go longer!

I was also taught that the only way I can have a lot of diversity with my hair was to have it relaxed again, but this really did not sit right with me. I forgot what I was searching for when I found LHCF, but once I saw all these people who already had long hair or were trying to grow healthier and/or longer hair, I was hooked. :)

Right now, I do not think there is anything specific that I need to know. I am trying to figure out my regimen and products that work best for me, so until and unless I find something else wrong, no questions here. My major battles are trying to keep my curls and finally get my hair properly moisturised.

Wow this was long!

The longest I have ever been is BSL back in 2005/2006. Since then I've been back to NL. I'm currently SL.

My goal is HEALTHY BSL length hair

2: What's your hair doing now? What do u use? What's your reggie (regimen)? What's in your stash? What's your style?

My hair is currently breaking off at the ends. It's only been doing this the last weeks weeks, I've also been using Kercare Shampoos and Humecto the last weeks. COULD THAT BE THE PROBLEM? :(

My Reggie:
1. Prepoo with ORS Hair Mayo w/ heat for 20 mins
2. **Clarify 1x a month**
3. Shampoo with Kercara Hydrating Shampoo
3. **I started using Aphogee 2 min reconstructor last week before I deep condition but I don't I'll be doing that every week, maybe every 2-4 weeks**
4. Deep condition with Keracare Humecto w/ heat for 30 mins
5. Apply Kercare Leave-in and biosilk serum and roller set

After hair has dried I moisturize with ORS Olive Oil and seal with Keracare Essential oil or unrefined coconut oil (I should also mention that I occasionally prepoo with coconut oil too.

During the week I'll moisturize and seal my hair. I wrap it at night and cover with scarf, for years I've made sure to alternative between the directions I wrap every night. When I used to wrap in only one direction, one side of my hair would grow noticeably slower than the other, like a 3 inch difference!!!!

For protective styling I just clip my hair up, or a loose ponytail where I don't untuck the ends, so it becomes a loop with the ends against my head. I don't really like buns.

Welcome Zayneey!

Congrats on the BC! Question: do u DC everytime u poo? Just wondering--maybe not w/braids? Let us know how you r doing it. How long do u think u'll rock ur braids? Will u do/have u done a TWA?

Niiq

Thanks, and i dont DC cuz of the braids. I just add Infusium 23 as a leave in treatment. I just wet my scalp, and then rub castile soap on my scalp only. Im going to be in braids for a while, until my hair is long enough to put in a puff. I'll take out the braids every two months. Right Now im a TWA my hair is like 3 inches long.

Oh Yea i just changed my regimen cuz of a new thing my sis gave mem and from what ive learned
she gave me this Oil thing, where she mixed shea butter, MN, and Essential Oils. I added the rest of my WGHO to it ( I had a little bit left) So i will be using that instead of the WGHO , and im only adding the Infusium only after a wash. Learned some stuff about buildup, hey im still a newbie

I am too excited to have joined this forum. I have become an addict when it comes to reading about natural hair. I have read countless blogs about it every since I decided to go natural. I was scared when I first got my hair cut. I felt like I looked a mess. But after i got some conditioner on my hair and saw those curls pop I have not regretted it. So here goes my story...

Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
I was nautral until I was around 8 and then my mother put the jherri curl in my hair. I had that until I got a perm at 13. My hair has been longer than shoulder length and as short as my ears. Perms worked ok for me, however, I also had a dry scalp promblem.

What's your hair doing now?
I got the BC after transitioning for 5 months in Jan of this year. Now I am sporting a curly TWA.

What do u use?
lots of experimenting at the moment

What's your reggie (regimen)?
Co-wash with Suave Coconut Conditioner
Condition with Moisture Maniac
Style with Long Aid Curl Activator and some type of leave in conditioner
Oils I use EVOO, Jojoba, Castor Oil, Shea butter, Almond oil

WHAT do U need to know?
just want to know as much as i can to find what is right for me

What forums do u like?
depends on the day of the week and my mood.

Hey 2009 Newbies (we really should get a name for ourselves),

Anyway, this is what I did to the stranz this week (ending yesterday):

To my regimen I added:
- Ayurveda oil and powders. Still working on getting it right though
- Added aloe vera juice to my moisture regimen
- Replaced the olive oil spray for sealing with Amla oil
- Dusted ends (versus the planned trim)

I will post a pic as soon I can.

Talk to you guys soon.

Hi I'm Quita
Thanks for starting this thread, I posted this on a seperate thread but I would like to joing the challenge.

I've been lurking now for a couple of weeks but I decided to take the plunge. Joined today 3/17. I'm 51/2 months into transitioning to a natural. I used to go to the salon once a week and she would press my hair which was great but now I can't afford it anymore. But I have a few friends who have gone through this process with great results at home. I have very fine hair don't know the type;

Here's what I have:
CHI ceramic blow-dryer approx. 1800 watts
FHI Platform 1 inch - only after washing
Heating cap for DC
pin curl or wrap every night
Capilo Aloe Vera Shampoo & Conditioner (use for DCs also there are Dominican products)
EVOO hot oil treatments
work out 3x/wk; Lots of water daily, biotin, prenatal (but phyto pills for a year)

Questions:
How often should I be washing my hair and DC’ing, once a week or ever 2 weeks?
Should I cowash?
If I wash once a week how should I handle the pressing? Should I air dry or blow dry if I'm washing once per week? (Stylist used ceramic blow dryer once per week)
What's a good leave-in conditioner to use – found some Dominican products on bluebeez.com?
Started MN on the shorter side of my hair on Sunday thanks to LHCF?

My hair is right below my ear maybe you can help with the acronyms also, Hate my short hair trying to get to APL by DEC 09

Hair state/length:
I guess my hair state was okay but I was starting to have major shedding and breakage. I've been transitioning since March of 2008 and the lack of knowledge of natural hair care was catching up with me. My natural hair is between EL and Chin Length in the front and almost SL in the back and my relaxed ends are about APL.
Goal length: Natural Hair to be SL by July and APL stretched by the end of Sept when I BC
Regimen/Reggie: I preepoo with oils, cowash 2x a week with V05 (right now), DC after using different add ins (EOs, MSM powder, Tea Tree Oil, Neem Oil, Honey), I use either ACV or Porosity Control, use a leave in (right now KC Knot Today) and seal with oil. I clarify once a month with a baking soda mix or baking soda and a little shampoo. I take multivitamin, biotin, vitamin E, MSM, garlic.
Styling: Protective Styles (Braidouts, Buns, Flat Twists)
Heat commitment: I'm on a personal no heat challenge til July and probably until my BC
Posting goals: I can probably post at least once every 2 weeks. Going to start a Fotki in the summer.

This was a great idea OP. I've really felt the love on this site and think this is a great way to help newbies and start the camaraderie that veteran LHCFers have.

Hi all my fellow newbies!!! I'm soo excited because I have been lurking :look: for months!! And I just officially subscribed. It's so great to see a place where we can come share our secrets and receive support from others!! Thank you all for sharing your knowledge!! Now to the good stuff....

Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
I have been everywhere (braids during highschool, wraps and sew-ins during college, and wraps all the way until late 2007 when i went natural.

What's your hair doing now?
I began my transistion to natural in Dec 2007. Started off with regular presses every week...then cheated and got a sew-in for a few months. Then went to bi-weekly presses. Now I'm sick of putting so much heat in my hair and am inspired to begin braid-outs, twist-outs, and buns!

What do u use?
Just came back from the beauty supply with: Motions Moisture Plus, Motions Leave In, Lustresilk Cholesterol, Molasses (for treatment), Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, and FOTE Gel

What's your reggie (regimen)?
Will begin regular co-washes with Mizani Conditioner (already had it in the cabinet )
Doing my first twist out (or braid out) tomorrow
Weekly DCs
Very minimal heat (hooded dryer for DCs)
Molasses treatment
TONS of moisture to ends

WHAT do U need to know?
Everything! :) But realistically, just how to care for my newly natural hair....and be confident with it. I didn't do the BC, I just grew it out, so I still have "some" length (kinda SL)

What forums do u like?
Loving the hair tips and product reviews so far
