1: Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
Well I have worn every wig and weave under the sun, I think my mom had me relaxed at birth. So now I've shaved it off and started over.
2: What's your hair doing now?
TWA (I just learned that means Teeny Weeny Afro) I wear wigs as a protective style
What do u use?
Mostly Herbal Essences Long term Relationship (HE LTR) or Breaks Over (HE BO) and I add powders like alma and brahmi and oils like almond and coconut and I always add honey.
What's your reggie (regimen)?
I co-wash as much as I can, I think my hair likes it and I DC about twice a week. ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinse so far, once a month (not sure I like it, gonna try baking soda). I also tried a oil rinse which I liked but I'm not sure when or how often to do it.
What's in your stash?
Vo5 strawberry, some suave, some trader joe's (no poos just conditioners), some Indian stuff, shea butter and some oils.
What's your style?
Wigs, Wigs and more wigs
3: WHAT do U need to know?
I really want to cut my split ends but I don't know how b/c its so short. Should I just go to a barber? I feel like they are splitting further each day but I'm not sure. I think it keeps be from seeing my real hair type.
4. What forums do u like?

Hair state: Getting healthier by the day.

Hair length: In mostly CL layers, but almost SL, I am planning on a serious trim this weekend though, so I don't know what it will be then. I will update then.

Goal length: SL - APL by 12-2009

Regimen/Reggie:
Daily - Just started Mega tek (found that on LHCF) with Shea butter and mango butter on scalp and hair, seal with olive oil
Sat - Wash w/Levar, DC w/Levar w/ heat for 30 mins,
Condition with Aphogee 2 minute
6 weeks - Aphogee 2 Step
Quarterly - Relaxer

Starting now as part of Thick Hair Challenge 2009, I am adding the following:

Wed - Co-Wash with something
Monthly
- Trim, I have a lot of frizzy ends.

I also joined the 4 month Ayurveda challenge. So I will most likely Co-Wash with conditioning powders and oils. I am waiting for the powders.

Styling: TBD - but I tend to bun A LOT!! Need to buy some more.

Heat commitment: Never had one before, I am working on that now. Will see what I can do as I firm up the new regimen.

Stretching goal: if applies: I relax 4 times/year (3 mos). I just relaxed this past weekend and am not due again till June. I would REALLY like to move to 2/year. Jan and June. So hopefully I will learn enough on the boards between now and June so that I can stretch my June relaxer till Jan.

Posting goals: As often as I have something of value to add, or Answer a question for one of the chanllenges. But I will at least say Hi once/week.

Albums? Links? - None yet, but I am working on it.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE 1: Moisturizing and Sealing.
I really need to figure this out, because I recognize that this is my main hair issue. Moisture/Protein balance. My hair is either too hard and dry, or soo soft it stretches like a rubber band and pulls right off my scalp. How does one find the balance?

I find the Mega Tek very wet so I thought it was a moisturizer. Then I read some info by SistaSlick (I think that is her name - that gurl is baaad) and she said be careful with balancing the protein and moisturizer. Made sense - so I added the Mega Tek to a naturally made shea/mango butter that can be used on body or hair. THEN learning more, I realised Shea is more oil based. Does that make it a seal? :perplexed

Once I conquer this, onto Personal Challenge 2: Split Ends

wow that is a lot of writing. :ohwell:

Hi everyone! I'm such a newbie that this is my very first post! Been lurking for weeks and I'm still working on my reggie. I'll try to post every week. I took a starting pic before I began doing any LHCF practices, so I'm excited to see what my hair will look like by the end of the year!

1: Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
I am currently a bit past SL.

I think I was almost APL when I was pregnant 8 years ago, but that length is long ago. I want to get to waist length and I think it's possible now that I've found this site.

2: What's your hair doing now? What do u use? What's your reggie (regimen)? What's in your stash? What's your style?

French twist/roll every day; wash/dc 1x per week with moisture; wash/dc 1x per week with light protein. Co wash 1x or 2x a week depending on how much I work out. I'm trying new products (Garnier, NTM), but my staples are the Motions shampoos and protein conditioners.

3: WHAT do U need to know?

Can't think of an answer to this one. There's sooooo much info here, that anytime I think of a question, I can search for it and get the answer.

4. What forums do u like? This one mostly.

I haven't had time to lurk too much on the others.

Reading your post is like reading about myself. I also have 4 1/b hair and have weaved, permed etc. I'm in a weave no that is coming out tonight! All I can say is do NOT texturize your hair. It will not give you the defined curls/waves you want. I'm still searching but you can learn from my mistake...

3: WHAT do U need to know? I would love to wear my hair natural sometimes, so i dont have to put so much heat in it. Someone PLEASE tell me how to find curl defination in 4a/b hair that has mostly waves and loose coils... :wallbash:

I'll have to fid the name again. The serum itself is white.

Hey! IMO, Your ends look just fine to me...like everybody else's! Look at everybody's pic--very similar when we start off. You might want to do a dusting instead of a trim....here's the link:

Hey Skiggie,

Welcome,

Have u tried making your own daily spray with glycerin and water to retain moisture? You have to play around with the mix to get it right but it really does become a staple when u r transitioning. If youre not doing heat, u WILL b reaching your goal in a matter of time if u can strike the protein/moisture balance. We hear u and we all will help out,

Arosie you are funny and are headed for a beautiful mane! You had me :lachen:about the relaxed at birth comment--many can relate (I was 8)! But your hair is so pretty. Wouldn't worry bout the ends as much as I used to when I was relaxed--natural hair sometimes has better curl def with a trim tho. I would keep it moist and let it grow and DYI once you get more length!!!
Check out this thread bout dusting gives good info for trimming:

I just joined today...WHOHOO!! I love LHCF ive been lurking for about 6 months! Finally decided to get my butt actively involved and start growing some hair!

1: Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals? I am a 4a/b and have never attained any growth past my collar bone... Between the weaving, perms, hands in my hair... i believe i just do too dag on much to it. My hair has always looked nice, but its never been the length that i want. My goal is to reach AP by the Dec of 09'. I know to reach that will be very hard, but i am commited to it and to KEEPING my hands out of out.

2: What's your hair doing now? I had worn weaves for the majority of 08'...as a feeble attempt to not manipulate my hair.. and grow out the perm. i didnt get much growth for some reason though... so i took out the weave about two months ago, omg! i found myself washing, blow and flat ironing my hair twice a week!! I have thick curly NG and the moment i did anything active it reverted...so i put it back up in a Full head weave, and this time...I WILL RETAIN LEGNTH
What do u use? What's your reggie.. i use AVEDA, and NEXXUS, essential oil blend of Olive Oil, Pepermint, Rosemary, Orange and chamomile oil
.. my reggie.. 1 raw egg w/ wheat germ daily, CO wash 2x week, DC 1x week, message scalp daily, vitamins- folic acid, biotin

3: WHAT do U need to know? I would love to wear my hair natural sometimes, so i dont have to put so much heat in it. Someone PLEASE tell me how to find curl defination in 4a/b hair that has mostly waves and loose coils... :wallbash::wallbash:

MsMicaela,

I'm thinking about what u r saying...maybe too much traction and double heat (weaves, blow frying and flat iron). I'll keep thinking. Have you heard of the MN for growth. I have been using this on my trouble spots and it HAS been working. Castor oil (cold-pressed) to me is the bomb because it is what I call a bio-active oil. It's kinda simpler and cheaper I have found out. I does coat/seal the hair too. Silk by Elasta QP and a sealer helped me stretch when I did relax. And I did not revert.

A good protective style that works with a lot of NG that sports curls nicely is bantu knot out. It can be really shiny and natural looking too. I have done it under a bonnet dryer with a leave in oil. Here are good links for a tutorial for putting them in and styling:

Oh Yeah. I have enjoyed everything I have read so far. Lots of info - somewhat overwhelming. So I a using the search function.

I just researched those Ayurveda powders and now I am more confused than ever. I would like to know where do I start?

Also, can someone suggest what I can use to stretch my time to my next relaxer? I would love to make 3/year15 weeks, but my scalp starts to protest after about 3 months. I am set to put one in this weekend, but will delay if I hear some good options.

Thnx

Ok here it goes:

Welcome again,

I would start at stretching. Ayurvedics c/b science unto themselves. You are already stretching the best u can--how about trying some protective styling like the curly fro by Dr. Lisa Akbari,
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=akbari+curly+fro&aq=1&oq=Akbari

the bantu knot out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfFcvZTYTWA&feature=related
using Silk by Elasta QP with a good sealant oil.

A lot of people use the baking soda treatment. Using a DC mixed in w/baking soda applied much like a relaxer and kinda worked through, i got significant softening manageability. I also used this as a no-poo. It was wonderful. I have no chems either. After such softening treatments, I am sure to use a sealant. Castor is MY fave. It's also important to learn to use a glycerin/water spritz for moisturizing. I use it for the bantu knot out or the curly fro. Your transitioning styles will help you stretch better, but the more u learn about your hair, the longer u can stretch.

HTH

Muse!

Welcome,

We can all relate more or less to something about our hair giving us a challenge! Some folks tangle really bad, some have really fine hair, some people have very dense (me as in concrete head). Even my hubbie who has 3a (big waves, looks straight to me) swears in almost tears that his hair is ahem, hard to comb at times.

BUT! This is where the curly haired people be! I know my reality about my hair was totally altered here. Hold on to your hats muse, cuz it can really be exciting to fall in love w/ what YOUR hair can do.

I used to think that my nape was the coarsest until I stopped relaxing it ,moisturized it for a year and saw VOILA, it was the most delicate, finest, straightest patch of hair I own. I was melting it then frying it all along.

Stay tuned lemme know exactly what you need I'll send u stuff, PM me too!

I became a subscribed member about a week ago
1: Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
I have done about everything except be natural, i'm relaxed.
My goal is to grow my hair past my bra strap and to have a healthy thick hair.

2: What's your hair doing now? What do u use? What's your reggie (regimen)? What's in your stash? What's your style?
My hair texture is fine at the moment and am trying to build up thickness, I've started to exercise which is a bit of pain cos of sweat. I just relaxed a week ago and am hoping to have a weave done in about 2.5weeks. I wash and deep condition with ORS Mayo and oil treatments, I use my oil mixture of MT,Coconut, Jojoba and castor oil daily as my hair gets dry exp the scalp. I plan to have weaves, kinky twist and canerows mostly for the rest of the year

3: WHAT do U need to know?
How to get thickness and length - Product, style, treatments recommendations.

4. What forums do u like? Hair and health

Enitan,

Welcome!

Thickness is it!! Do you plan to strech or relax as u go? Has your hair always been fine?

Yo. I'm Giggletush, and I too am a newbie.

I knew about this board back in '07, but didn't really lurk/explore. I just decided to subscribe about a month ago.

I became interested in taking care of my hair last summer/fall when I finally got fed up :pullhair:! I had gotten a bad relaxer in June, and a weave. Then had to take the weave out in early August. I had sooo much new growth and reversion (of course I didn't really understand these terms at that point). My hair was EXTREMELY dry and the demarcation line was not taken care of, causing my hair to fall off in clumps. I started searching the web for help and solutions. I had learned about cowashing a while before, and had been doing it at least once a week. But I had been using a protein conditioner, and no moisture...which attributed to protein overload and extreme breakage. Anyhoo, I decided to just not deal with my hair anymore and get a lacefront. That was when I found BHM, and was obsessed with the lacefront section....I wanted to research for at least 1 full month before investing in one. One day I got bored with the section and wondered over to the growth section, and have never looked back since. I never did invest in that lacefront, and have rediscovered my hair, in a more manageable state.

I LOVE LHCF, and am sooooo glad that I finally subscribed.

My hair was about neck length when I started on the 19th of Dec, and am now shoulder length (But not quite full shoulder). I'm 4a/b hair type, and it's pretty thin. I'm still in the process of learning to balance my protein and moisture. And TRYING soo hard not to be too much of a PJ. My goals right now I guess are:
1. To build the health of my hair
2. Learn proper retention methods
3. Then focus on length.

Sorry for the loooong story, when I start typing I just can't seem to stop :spinning:

Welcome Giggle,

You seem to be on the right track...are you relaxing these days...?That will help you decide what styles u can use to retain your length and know how to moisturize daily. Lemme know

Sorry it took this long to get to you,

Niiq

Thank you so much!! I wondered how people got the Bantu knots in their hair. I LUV those and plan to try to them out as I stretch this time. I did go on and relax my hair though (my comb broke, seriously, and I figured it was time :yep:). BUT it is not bone straight this time. I put it in and then washed it out. I also used no direct heat. I think I am on my way!!:yay:

YAY!!!! Im so happy you started this Niiq!! I hope its not too late to join this challenge bc I am a newbie who NEEDS this. So Im in! I just finished the find a regimen challenge and am currently in the Neck/collarbone challenge but really haven't done anything. Am trying to really use the forum to reach my goals. I think this may help in trying to get there bc I need the structure and support from my natural sisters. Here is my info:
1: Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
I have done it all. I want to learn to love my natural hair. I think that will come through learning how to care for it properly and having a length that I want. My goal is to be educated on how to reach that length and will in turn begin to love my hair.
2: What's your hair doing now? What do u use? What's your reggie (regimen)? What's in your stash? What's your style?
My hair is doing nothing right now. I just don't know. I have only been doing my regimen for a week. I am using AO Honeysuckle Rose shampoo, Pantene Pro-v deep conditioning masque, ORS Hair mayo, Giovanni Direct Leave-in, Motions Leave-in, Profectiv moisturizer, pantene moisturizer, JC nourish and shine, castor oil
3: WHAT do U need to know?
EVERYTHING I CAN!!! How do I get this stuff to grow
4. What forums do u like? Hair care, skin care*not sure if this is real name of forum*

Welcome,

Sundiva we are on the case...will post inthe evening. I gotta make myself go to sleep! Hey, I did notice that u use protein regularly...are you pretty confident about that? A lot of no-chems do not do that so very often, or if they do, are certain to do it w/a moisturizer...that's what I was taught.

TTYS,

Niiq

Morning Ladies! I'm Excited about this.. I feel so lost in translation most times.. but anyhow..

Where you been, where you wanna go with your hair? Goals?
I've been relaxed, and i wear extensions from time to time. I'm currently with my first set of tree braids and kina iffy bout them. Never been weaved though, considering it for the summer. My goal is to have strong healthy natural hair at shoulder length, for now

What's your hair doing now?
Sitting comphy under these tree braids.

What do u use?
Kinky Curly - Come Clean, Knot Today, and Curling Custard

What's your reggie (regimen)?
Wash Twice Weekly, Co Wash daily / every 2 days, Kinky Curly Products exclusively for my lack of product knowledge and ease of use.

WHAT do U need to know?
How exactly to build my regimen for my hair type, I figure i'm a 3c//4a, but my hair is Pseudo curly, and sometimes thin.. it's awful fickle..

What forums do u like?
I've only trolled this one.. i really should get out more.
