oh, i want to add:

another reason i'm sure the "rinses" work well is because after i've "made" them, i pour them into 1/2 liter water bottles and keep them in the frigerator until wash day.

this way, they are cold (I don't like that:nono:, BUT my hair does!:yep:)
however, i apply them in the shower, so i just keep the water on as hot as i can to compensate.....

COLD WATER seals the hair shaft and makes it flat which they say is the first step to shiny, glossy hair, so that's the ONLY reason why i do it!

My reggie works well for me and consists of

- Nightly baggying with castor oil, and protective styling by day.

- and I perm my 4a/b hair with a “Kiddie Kit” for "fine hair”, minimum of 15 wks.

THANKS for these tips!
btw, could you please explain "baggying with castor oil"?

also, i used to use a kiddie perm for fine hair, but then they stopped making the fine hair formula.

which one do you use?

-I wash my hair every 5-7 days with a gentle shampoo. I don't avoid SLS shampoos but I use gentle version for damaged or relaxed hair. I am loving NTM shampoo.

-apply a mild protein treatment every week.

-Deep condition every week (with a dc that specifies for deep conditioning 10mins +)

-Nexxus emergencee or penettrait every 2-3 weeks

-leave in conditioner and heat protectant , Rollers, and blow out my roots ( i do skip heat the 1st 4 weeks of a relaxer).

grow... thank you so much for posting! These rinses are new to me... it sounds like it is really giving you results. :yay:

I had to laugh when you said you don't like the cold rinses but your hair does! That's the mentality that I think is a defining difference between someone who retains a lot and someone who doesn't. It's not fun having that cold rinse on your head, but the results balance it off. People who don't want to make those little sacrifices are often the ones begging for help and wondering why their hair won't grow.

gissellr78... your hair is so amazing! I am in love with the shine of your hair on the rollers in your avi! I never could rollerset :nono: I'm not coordinated enough.

Every time I see your siggy I drool over your hair and your petite waistline! Once I have this baby it's going to be :orders: :strong: for me, so I can get my situation looking like yours! :gorgeous:

Rollers are not too difficult you have to pick a pattern and stick with it and in a few weeks you get the hang of it.:drunk:

Congrats on your baby!!!

I suppose it's because I have a lot on my plate, responsibility-wise, and because I am hopelessly lazy. :lachen: I remember when posters were putting their reggies into their sigs... I would be exhausted just LOOKING at the massive complicated hair rituals they had :drunk: Plus I noticed that the posters with long luscious locks had short and sweet reggies. So I based my reg off of a Hair Goddess with a simple reg and never looked back.

I'd like to thank all of you ladies for posting in here :yay:
Thanks so much for this! I have a very busy life and a pretty tight budget so as a newbie sometimes I feel overwhelmed and like I'm never going to reach my goal because there's no way I'm keeping up with all of the different steps and products. It's good to know that it's possible to do by keeping it simple.

Thanks you also for starting this thread. It's been very helpful.

I seal ends with coconut oil or jamaican black castor oil.

Relaxed, natural, texlaxed, BKT or other?: Texlaxed formerly, but transitioning (6 mos + in)

How long have you been on a Healthy Hair Journey? 7-10 yrs. Joined this site 5 yrs ago and got REAL SERIOUS about it then, and incorporated new products and techniques. Before then, I had healthy, BSL and longer hair, but I was trimming too much for my tastes, and also having too many TU's as well. I wanted to grow my hair longer, and learn to stretch the time between relaxers effectively, and also retain length/healthy ends without having to do excessive trimming.

What is your reggie?:

-I shampoo my hair with a mild shampoo about every 3-4 wks. Sometimes I'll add a CW at the half-way mark (2 wks), sometimes not. I keep my hair braided 100% of the time underneath a LF unless it's wash day.

-On wash day, I just use poo (CON green label, shampoo bars), deep condish, cheapie condish (for a creme rinse), leave-ins (like S-Curl, Motions Nourish Leave-In, Coconut Oil or Amla Oil).

-Apply serum to hair and ends, as well as a grease (Allways Indian Hemp) to seal the texlaxed portion/ends of hair.

-Rebraid while damp. Airdry, then rock a LF when I have to go out. I apply oils as needed to scalp during the interim (between washes), and re-moisturize ends. Occasionally I will also take my braids down, comb out the shed hair, and if my hair doesn't need a washing in particular, I will re-moisturize/oil and rebraid for a few wks** :look:

What special tips, advice or tricks have you learned? KISS, and keep other folks' hands out of your hair! I guarantee no one will care for your hair LIKE YOU WILL (that is, if you have healthy techniques in the first place...if you don't then yeah, someone might be able to do a better job)! Always use a good conditioner (e.g. good doesn't have to mean expensive), and cover your hair at night or use a satin/silk pillowcase. Lots of damage and dryness is done to hair at night (particularly ends)when cotton pillowcases/sheets are allowed to rub against the hair.

**I've become very busy with other things in life, like being a mom, finishing my degree, and working...so I devote minimal time to my hair in a given month so I can get more important things done...that is to say also that I keep my look up w/LF's and FLW (full lace wigs) so I can leave my hair alone and have that extra time. Sorry so long, but I wanted to put it here and then copy it into my Fotki! HHG Ladies!

This is a great thread, I'm obsessed with the WL one, but BSL IMO is so much more attainable.

I'd say I really started treating my hair well in 2006, and really started taking TRUE care of my hair in August 2007 when I decided to transition.

What is your reggie?:

For straight hair (usually during the winter months)

wash and deep condition
moisturize, coconut oil
let air dry in 4 braids
maxiglide straight
tie up at night
moisturize ends at night

For curly hair (usually during the hot months)

co-wash with a cheapie condish
moisturize
scrunch with mousse
let air dry

also:
buns and braidouts are great for me as well.

cowash
moisturize
braid up
sleep on it
wake up and loosen braids and tousel/style with fingers

Buns

cowash
moisturize
put hair in a bun
moisturize ends nightly

What special tips, advice or tricks have you learned?

I dunno if these count as tricks but I:

- moisturize like crazy
- treat my hair gently (usually)
- avoid lots of heat
- seal moisturizers in with coconut oil (or any oil that works for u)
- keep hair up in a loose bun in the house
- tie hair up every night
- live a healthy lifestyle and it'll show thru in your hair

Perhaps some ladies have had that experience. I have noticed that newbies tend to have the most insane reggies, but the longer people are at this HHJ, the more they simplify.

As for myself, I have had a simple reggie from the jump. I may have tried different products out, and I have switched protective styles from time to time. But the core of my reggie: protective styling, no/very low direct heat, intense moisture... those things haven't changed and never will.

ITA...I started out with a simple reggie because I really didn't know what else to do. The simple weekly wash/DC/rollerset/low mani/moisturize and seal ends has worked wonders for me. I was always to scary and/or cheap to do anything too complicated.

Since I joined LHCF in 2004

What is your reggie?:
I don't really have a reggie. I just Wash, condition, moisturize, whenever I feel like my hair needs it. I really can't follow strict reggies I'm too lazy. Some of my favorite products are: ORS Replenishing Conditioner, Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner and shampoo, and Darcy's Botanical products. Other than that I switch to whatever my pj-butt is using at the time.

What special tips, advice or tricks have you learned?
Hmm..I don't know. I guess when roller setting as a natural, don't expect your roots to get straight and struggle to get the rollers in perfect. I just throw the rollers in and flat iron anything that didn't turn out perfect. I've lost many pieces of hair trying to get my rollersets perfect.
I don't wrap my hair up on a regular basis when I sleep and I only protective style when I bun my hair cause I'm too lazy to actually do it and just throw it in a bun:nono:. I'm sure my hair could be a lot longer if I wasn't so lazy with my hair care practices.

What is your reggie?: I usually cowash twice a week with ors deep conditioner or whatever i have at the time. I sometimes use aubrery organics honeysuckle, a nexxus product or a suave coconut shampoo. I followup with avocado butter and bun my hair. I have taken vitamins for hair growth over the years (biotin, amino acids, protein shakes, chlorella). That is about it. Oh for the first year of being natural i wore a wig and when my hair grew long enough i would do a sew in, so the first yr i was able to get to shoulder length from cutting it short a bc. I would do this every month or so and wash then get it redone.

What special tips, advice or tricks have you learned? I really have enjoyed becoming natural and learning about how to handle my natural hair. I know for me if i want to straighten my hair i proably will have to trim and stay at that length so when i want to gain some inches i stay away from heat period. I think some growth aids mentioned on the board are worth a try, you have to find out what works for you!
