Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

Long haired ladies, I'd like to hear stories of when you wear your hair down and the reactions you get from MEN. I'm not quite there yet...but I can dream, can't I?

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

Well...

Last school year, I wore my hair down one day at work. One of my fellow teachers (male) came around to my classroom. His room was way on the opposite side of our campus. And he goes "I heard that you had your hair down today so I walked around to see & it was worth the trip." He is VERY flirty though and he even had a girlfriend at the time. I hadn't worked there for very long at that time and felt that he was quite bold.

Another time, I went to visit my former church & I saw one of my old homies after church so I stopped her on the parking lot. I got into her car and we started talking and catching up. Then this guy walked up to her window and started talking to her. She really embarrassed him by telling him "You never talk to me this long. I guess since you see all this hair on my passenger side you wanna talk." Then she asked him if he was going to be cooking later on that day. To which he replied "No, as a single man I don't cook that often." So, she called him out again saying "You just had to slip that 'single' in there." It was pretty funny. He was nice.

Hi divanrare!

Heck yeah I beat em off with stick! They always want to play in it. I don't have particularly long, long hair, but it's long enough for most black people to consider it long (2in from brastrap). I always have guys say stuff to me referring to "all that hair." they always use that exact phrase. But they really really love to play with it. They are like toddlers. You know how young children always want to comb and plait your hair. Men are the same way. They love to play in it.

There must be a tiny little hairdresser or something inside every man.

I think so too. I am not long enough yet naturally to have to beat them off witha stick but with a good weave or my braids men are ALWAYS trying to touch.

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

Please don't mention braids. When I took mine out, the guy that was so interested in talking to me before just suddenly disappeared. He did not even get to see my real hair.

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

These are a few which put a huge grin on my face.

1. About 2 years ago, on a summer day, I decided to trek out to Fresh Fields/Whole Foods to stock up on some fruit. I'd just about reached the store and I could here a rather loud engine and some guys talking so I started walking a bit faster. The next thing I heard was "Hey, long, tall and silky, what's up? I turned around, saw a car full of guys with smiles on their faces and staring hard. They were giggling like a bunch of kids. I laughed, said "hey" and kept going. They followed, told me they thought I and my hair were quite lovely [had to edit here] and drove off waving. Have to say that I will always remember this one because the guys seemed to have a lot of fun and were not threatening in any way. And, that's my story for purchasing some Aubrey Organics Jasmine shine spray. I had used that to combat the humidity...my hair was like a sheet of silk!

2. A couple of months ago, I decided it was time to try some of those Gap low-rise bootcut cords for women. Usually, I stick with men's jeans, but I was incredibly curious. When I got to the store, I was greeted by this guy who said that he would be glad to help me. He pointed me in the direction of the cords, told me about the colors and then I hit the fitting room to try a few on. I went outside the fitting room, still in the fitting area to look in the surrounding mirrors and the guy said I looked realllllly nice. I said they were incredibly comfortable. Then, he encouraged me to come to the main area of the store for better lighting. I was like that's a good idea. When I got out there, there were 2 other men there who had big grins on their faces. The sales guy who had helped me said: "Please, undo that braid." I said sure, and spread my hair out. He told me that he wished he'd had a camera because I looked "BEAUTIFUL".

3. There was a man I will never forget who complimented me while I was using the Metro (subway system here). I was waiting on the platform, a train arrived and people streamed out..rush hour. This man stopped dead in his tracks, looked at me and said "Your hair is gorgeous." Then, he continued on hurrying. I think that one astonished me because he was so spontaneous and sincere.

Here is one for ya:

"Are you Black?"
"As Black as they come. Why don't I look black?
"Yes, but your hair looks so silky."
(Actually conversation)

No he outright said it. He said that he and his friends call girls with chin length hair "baldies" My hair is just below chin length and he has not seen it. On a really good hair day like today, it is smooth and sleek and shiny and the thickness really shows.

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

Oh girl! PLEASE call him when you reach your hair goal. Make any excuse to see him. And once y'all see each other, just act so un-interested. So I guess he is a baldy too then! How dumb, chin length hair is considered medium length in the hair-care industry.

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

I have given up on him and all guys, I am going to focus on changing myself for the better.

Go girl!

I can only remember getting a compliment one time about my hair and that was years ago when I was still destroying it with my blowdryer. It's probably just because I always wear it back, like 99% of the time. I was at a summer program at Cornell and I had just taken a shower and I blowdried my hair and was hanging out in the lounge with my hair down and someone was like, "I didn't realize you had all that hair [yep, same phrase
laugh.gif
]..It looks nice." Too bad the guy that said it was a total JERK! During that whole program my friend and I kept calling him "Hitlero" (must be pronounced with a Spanish accent like, "eetlayrrrro") behind his back, because he was always going on about how great Latinos were and how they should rule the world (I think he was Dominican or something...can't remember). Anyway I had a long talk with him once and I think he may have begun to see the error of his ways, but who knows?

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

I get that "it's so refreshing to see a black woman with her own long hair" They think it's a compliment but it aint. Dont compare me with my sisters by implying negativity about women who wear weave, just admire me for me. And a lot of these guys dont even realize that many women cover up their "real long hair " with fake hair to protect it.

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

Oh my... I remember my freshman year in college, the first semester,I was quite a "nerd"-I rarely dressed up and my hair stayed in a ponytail or braids. The next semester,I got the hang of college life and I began to live a little.I got my hair pressed and wore a cute outfit-MANN!! I received so much attention from both men and women. The men made extra efforts to talk to me,walk with me,escort me to my dorm, carry my books, etc. I knew the attention was not real, but I liked it. Mostly what I get now is,"is that your real hair?"
Oh another experience last year-I was coming out of the Chik-fil-A parking lot and this guy pulled up next to me.I was not amused because he was blocking my turning view.I guess he saw the look on my face so he said sorry. My hair was permed in a ponytail and down. He then was like,"is that your hair?" I nodded and turned my head so he could see-he got my digits after the short hair convo.

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

Yes honey you have to beat them off with a stick..

And you can't beat the response of the WHITE MEN!!! Me and my older sis talk about this all the time. Cause it seems to me like they are just a little bit friendlier when you have long hair hanging down your back

Re: Beatin\' \'Em Off With a Stick, Huh?

oooh i got stories too =+) i'm such a dork

a couple of weeks ago i was in the university center at my school walking towards the student lounge to study for my final exam. this guy and his friend who works there out of nowhere were staring at me, i thought it was cause something was wrong. then he says "all that pretty long hair" i smiled and we started a convo.

some of you may remember about that guy who told me i was lying when i told him my hair was real. well after that it seemed like every day he would come to my job and try to talk to me.i wasnt too fond of him after he made that stupid comment so i always cut it short. but once he told me my hair looked nice and it was really long. i told him it was just hair and it wasnt that serious.his reply was he knows, but he finds it attracive in women.

at my job i usually always wore my hair in a bun or clipped up so noone really knew if it was real or what it looked like but i wore the bottom half down with a pony tail on the top and once the buildig manager saw me he stopped and started smiling and made a big deal saying how wonderful and different i looked and how i have all these different looks.and another white guy who works in the same building said he likes seeing me with my hair down cause i look so pretty.people must think i look ugly with my hair up or something cause even my b/f said the same thing

Isn't that funny how black people and different races have different ideas about what long hair is?
