To all natural and texlaxed ladies,

Do you usual wear your hair in it's shrunken or stretched state. If so which has allowed you to do more with your hair? What banding methods has for you resulted in the least amount of shrinkage? I only ask this because the last time I've tried wearing my hair in all of it's shrinkage I couldn't do anything with it and I got breakage along with it. It looked like a pyramid shaped twa I kid you not :nono:. Usually I do twist/braidouts but aside from bantu knots I wouldn't know what else there would be.

This newbie thanks you for your input!

I wear my hair always banded/stretched, and I do it by a two step method. First, on soaking wet hair (post DC/wash/treatment) I put my hair in a couple of two strand twists, and let them dry about halfway, maybe a little more. Then, I untwist them, apply castor oil, comb them out, and then braid them, and let them dry.

Okay, so technically, it's not banded, it's braided, but I can't imagine getting a better 'stretch' with bands than braids - esp fat ones - because you can start a little loose at the root, and then braid the hair really, really, tight.

Since my hair is still a little damp, it 'sets' that way - and when I take it down it's nicely stretched. My ends aren't as detangled as I would like them to be, but that's because I don't have even vaguely blunt ends, so I can't 'pull' the tips as taunt as the rest of the braid.

I guess that was a long behind explanation of a braid-out, wasn't it? :lachen: I don't know - I think that adding the oil and the extra combing in the middle makes it smoother.....hrrrm. Yeah, the one time I skipped that step, my hair was MUCH more tangled when I took the braids down.

I don't really band but my hair is usually stretched out. I don't think I have worn it shrunken (ala wash and go) in over a year. I don't usually band because my ends will curl on each other so I usually just wear it in really large braids.

Is banded not the same thing as stretched? Sorry I'm kinda new to the terms even though I've been natural for a year...

To clear things up a bit. Banded and stretched are not the same thing...
Banding is a method of stretching usually done to natural hair in order to airdry but have a stretched end result.
While the hair is still wet or damp, it is usually detangled and then ribbons, bands, scrunchies or scarves are tied around the hair (starting at the roots and down the length). Then then give the hair time to dry and remove the bands once it is dry.

up until a few weeks ago i wore a WNG almost every day. now i twist it up after washing and wear the twistout for 3-4 days then cowash and repeat.

i banded when i was transitioning and a few times after the BC, but not lately, pretty much because i forgot about it and twisting my hair into 6 chunky twists is so much easier.

here is a pic of my hair banded:

Thank you ladies (except you Kiya, you managed to confuse the hell out of me LOL jk) I didn't even know about banding! I am learning something new every day. OP, I've been natural a little over a year myself. I JUST finished a rollerset so I will have to try this over the weekend.

Most of the time its in the shrunken state...I do twist my hair at night if I wear it out which stretches it a little bit.

I've never heard of banding 'til I saw this thread so thanks ladies for the clarification.

JK - Thank you too! You didn't confuse me at all. :lachen:

I'm going to try your method today because I've been having problems with tangly braid-outs.

To answer the original question though, natural or texturized, I stretch my hair with either braid-outs or twist-outs. I don't do wash-n-go hair with it texturized because it's too frizzy. So I'm still trying to solve that issue. Also, when my hair was natural it would shrink up, tangle up, and knot up into a TWA when ever I tried a wash-n-go. :nono:

:lachen: Where? What part? :lachen: I do that, sometimes.

I wear my hair stretched out. I cannot band my hair because it's too shrinky. To stretch out my hair, I have to blowdry it out first before styling.

I band my hair sometimes. It depends on my mood because I will wear a wash n go in a minute. But for the most part I will wear a twist out. Sometimes I will even band that.

My hair shrinks so bad, banding doesn't help. Heck, my banded ponytail shrinks as it dries. I never tried to wear a style as a result of having had my hair banded. When I take the bands off, my hair shrinks even more.

I do like the length it does show when banded, it is more than I could show any other way without straightening, which I don't do.

Oh hey! My old thread.

Have you tried banding in smaller parts or when you band criss cross the actual bands.

Threading is a different variation of banding I suppose but with anyone hair longer than a twa I'm sure they wouldn't have the patience.

Banding doesn't really help me either but my hair isn't long enough for it or I didn't really give it a chance.

I stretch in other ways now. I can't remember the last time when I wore my hair shrunken though. Perhaps back in 08'...?

I always wear my hair stretched. It tangles too much and gets too many ssk if I don't, so I either leave is in twists or do a modified twist and curl.
