Ladies lately I have been seeing some really short dry naturals. Being a transitoner this is a bit discouraging. I see the pictures of ladies on this board and they don't look like what I am seeing. What's going on? Is it just that the ladies here know what they are doing and others do not? What is up ths?

i think it depends on the person treating their hair with care or just acting like "i ain't gotta do ish to it now that i'm natural" which is such a lie. you have to start a new routine for your natural hair but many think that cutting out the relaxer means cutting out any kind of routine. Just dont be "that girl"

you are very knowledgeable on natural hair enough to know what it "shouldn't" look like

so you will be just fine

BTW i know what your talking about and it makes me think "what a waste" when i see natural hair being treated badly (dry, linty, etc..) -jainygirl

I went through my short, dry period too as a newly natural.

Sometimes it just takes a while to get a routine down that works for your hair, especially if you haven't been natural for many years. Not sure if this is the case with the naturals that you are speaking of, or if they're satisfied with their own hair. But either way, don't let it discourage you. You have a few options on how to transition to natural and I'm sure you will find one that suits your preferences!

As a natural, it is imperative that you continue to drink lots and lots of water. Due to S-curl and Z-pattern of natural hair, the hair appears to be dry because it doesn't "trap" sheen like a straight or l-pattern type would. Therefore, i make sure that I drink lots of water and keep my hair moisturized by doing a good condition wash daily or every other day; a deep conditioner once every two weeks; and a hot oil treatment, probably every 6 to 8 weeks or so. Finding a good moisturizer conditioner and leave-in is a quest for most naturals [and relaxed sisters], but once you find that magical product, you're good to go!!!

I love to use shea butter and aloe on my hair (it gets a little oily but after a day or to it gets better). I haven't wore a shake and go in awhile. It's too cold for all that. I think the weather makes it alittle dry too, but some people think you don't have to do anything to your hair after you stop perming and I know That's not true.

Same here, and I still have those days when my hair looks as dry as dust. It takes a while to find out which products work well on an individual's natural hair, and don't forget about scab hair. I wouldn't let the way someone else's hair looked discourage me growing natural hair out of my own head.

Maybe you've just caught them on an off day. I saw a lady yesterday who usually has healthy looking natural hair, but yesterday her hair looked dry as the Sahara Desert!! I'm talkin' DRYYYYYYY. Her hair looked so dry that I was hoping she didn't stand too close to any heaters 'cause it would have set her hair 'a fire for sho!! Okay, I'm just kidding, but you get the idea. We all have our bad hair days.

the same way that seing people with dry unkempt natural hair shoudldt deter you from wanting to achieve your own healthy natural hair is the same way that seeing a head of dry broken relaxed hair shoudlnt discourage you from long healthy relaxed hair goals. Dont let "bad examples" discourage you. Most likely those women dont frequent internet forums for haircare advice.

I think it's all about keeping moisture in our hair! WE all know that whether relaxed or natural or texturized, our hair begs for moisture and if we don't give alot to it, it turns on us and will embarrass the hell out of us!!! LOL!! I think I'm transitioning, though it's only been 5 weeks, but I'm very seriously considering it. Last time I did the big chop, but there is NO WAY I'm going to ever do that again! Currently I have an inch of newgrowth and I'm keeping my hair super moistened with UBH Moisturizer and it feels great! The two textures aren't "fighting" though I'm prepared for when this may happen (maybe it won't) and I'm getting lots of great advice from this board! So I really think moisture is the key. How long have you been transitioning Brittanynic?

Remember not all naturals can show shine easily nor do they care about having shiny hair - so just because their hair might look dry it may not be. Also sadly there are alot of naturals who don't know how to take care of their hair. Next time if you get a chance strike up convo (if you can) and get to the subject of hair and share some of your great knowledge!!!!

Thanks for all the advice ladies. Don't worry I am not going off the path, sometimes it can just be a little unsettling. I guess I am worried about not knowing how to take care of my hair but I will be transitioning for a while so i will figure it out. Thanks!

Cocoacure - my last relaxer was in November but the official day I started transitioning was a week or two ago.

I agree with LON71. Also, the key is to rinse or mist daily and to seal with a leave in condish and oil.

I hurt my shoulder haven't rinsed/shampooed for about ten days. (Please don't throw tomatoes.) But I have been wetting it daily and applying leave in and it looks okay. I am feeling better and I definately gonna shampoo today.

I agree about the bad hair days. I'd been fighting dry hair since winter started, but it seems I just didn't have the right regimen yet. But I was also guilty of thinking for a while that I ain't gotta do ish since I've got no hair.

I like Carol Daughter's Hair Milk and use it daily, thanks to DSD. She saw my dry head and did hit the nail on the head when she asked if I'd clarified lately? So, I dropped my CON shampoo and got Suave clarifying shampoo. It helped. I do conditioner washes daily, then add the milk and tie the hair down. I still do the deep conditioner every two weeks. The regimen works for me. I've yet to do a hot oil treatment, though. TWA's are as much work as long hair.
