I was talking to a friend yesterday and we were discussing the cost of hair care products and hair remedies. I told her that my SIL orders some hair grease that cost $30.00 for a 4oz jar, called Cousins (I don't know if it works). She said well back in the day I use to order all kinds of hair care products that advertised women of color with long hair because it was a rare sight.

As she was talking I started to think about what I did use to do pre hair boards to grow my hair:

Used mayo mixed with soy sauce as a conditioner. My beautician told me that it was comparable to PC? Think maybe she was talking about a dudley product. Not sure if it worked but I do know I had super shiny hair.

Ordered Spanish grow from an infomercial. It was about $10.00 and I thought that price was outrageous. It did not work.

Bought some head start vitamins from Neiman's and they cost about $30.00 but at least you could buy one and get one free. They worked!

What did you do back in the day for your hair?

Back in the day I can remember the smell of the house as my mom would press me and my sisters hair with good ol' B&B castor oil. After I was relaxed my "regime" consisted of a weekly wash with creme of nature shampoo and occasionally a couple of minutes of cholesterol conditioner. I remember my days of royal crown, bergamont blue grease, bone straight blow drying lotion (used to love this stuff), and that horrid pink oil "moisturizer".

BAck in the day I used to have a perm(first Just for me then Dark and lovely or creme of nature). I used to use Luster Pink oil moisturizer which smelled awful to me, and would kill any nice smelling shampoo or conditioner I used. I used to curl my hair 1-3 times a day and wonder why I had breakage. But I do miss when my mom would do my hair for me, and use the boar's bristle to smooth down the edges for my side ponytail... Sorry reminiscing.

My parents didn't think much of spending a lot of money on hair care products, so when I was younger I used to use Suave shampoo and conditioners and blue magic hair grease.

Later I upgraded to using TCB products. If I begged especially well sometimes my mom would buy me a jar of Spanish Sure-Gro. I just loved how it was pink and smelled like strawberries. Plus, it was definitely lighter than using blue magic (aka 100% pure petroleum).

ETA: I also went through a long pink oil moisturizer phase. And back then I actually liked the stuff.

back in the day I would put b & b grease on my hair and scalp, then curl it everyday, and not wash it but once every 2 weeks and then wondered why it smelled bad and itched like there were bugs in it.

needless to say it never really got past my ears

Back in the day I remember when I thought it was alright to only wash my hair after getting a relaxer touch up

That black hair did not grow

That nappy hair was ugly

Pink lotion was a great product

That you combed the relaxer thru your entire head during every relaxer.

I am surprised I even had hair left on my head. It was stuck at the same length for years until I BC'd and went natural.
