In hair purgatory
Depending on how long you have been here, wouldn't you say that the trends have changed? what was cool/important etc in say the early mid 2000 are either absolute or taken over by some new product or styling technique.

For example:

back in the day it was all about WGO and MTG, now its about homemade sulfur mixes and Hair trigger

Depending on the responses i also thought it would be fun to make a collaboration!

I remember back in the day I heard nothing about sealing ends. Now, it is almost a must in order to get and keep long hair. My back in the day is the 70's and 80's kids... lol

Back in the day there were the big guns = Hair Veda, Oyin, Qhemet, SSI and Darcys and a few others, now there are 50 'leven hand made product companies

back in the day youtube hair vids were just ladies in their bathroom chatting into a camera and doing their hair, now they are movie productions with sponsors and such

Back in the day, when I first joined henna and henna gloss was all the rave. Boundless Tresses was a big deal as well.

Back in the days 2006, it was Keracare and Dominican hair products!! Now, it's dirt, water, and berries.. Aka all natural! Lol

back in the day it was about relaxer stretches and now everyone is natural or transitioning or thinking about it or going back to relaxers or texlaxing after being natural.

when i joined no one was "going natural".....i wish they were so i could be done with my own transition RIGHT NOW :)

When I joined it was all about Dominican products, texlaxing, Ayurvedic concoctions.....the growth aid explosion! megatek, sulfur based mixes like bee mine and MTG, MN and taking Biotin and/or MSM.

Back in the day it was all about caruso steam rollers, mtg & baggying...and APL was the "must have" length lol....now MBL or WL are the (average) raved lengths.

Back in the day before I joined grease was the devil, if anyone said it they got side looks. Now grease is the best product to heavy seal with besides plain petroleum and jbco.

Swype thinks weird and wierd are both correct

Damn....back in the day I was using bergamont n ultra sheen hair grease in da pyramid jar....da blue kind. Back in da day, da hot comb was on da stove along with da scorched paper towel that I sat it on, with da burnt teeth marks on it. I had to blow on it to cool it down!

Back in MY day, there were no flatirons or 'lectric hair curlers. I used brown paper bags! Yup....sho did. Dem brown paper bags worked and they were already greasy moisturized from da Ultra Sheen. Had a curl too!

Back in MY day, goin to the "hairdresser" (not salon) was a treat.

Back in my day, pink sponge rollers was da bidness chile....

Back in my day, I washed, greased, towel dried my hair, braided it up and let it dry. Then I pulled out my metal prong pic wif da fist on it(green, black n red) and picked my afro out!

Yeah.....back in da day!

P.S. we didn't have a dustpan to get da trash up. We used an album cover cuz dat orange aluminum type dustpan wouldn't pick up nuffin, so we used an album cova!

That's another topic, but yall got it made now. Cell phones, computers, dial a number now and u tawkin to a robot, machine or whateva yall callit. Deep conditioning, plastic caps, steamers, flat irons, fancy hair salons...yall doin it!

RIP to my carusos... I loved those things

Back in the day natural meant a fresh press (setting of smoke detectors and all!!) or braids...not twist outs, bantu knots, or any other cute fancy styles

Back in the day few people spoke of 3a, 3b, 3c or 4a, 4b, 4c

Back in the day I would have NEVER EVER EVA wore a twist out....eva lol

Back in the day 7 ppl had a blog....now everybody in the family has a blog including the pet.

Wow! You just described my life back in da day! You sure you're not the sister I never had?

- I'd say there's a more 'scientific' understanding of hair and products. That, I think, has led to more of a focus on retention rather than growth aids.

- There's also more of a 'do what works for you'/ 'listen to your hair' mentality rather than the millitant behaviour we used to see. People would demand someone else's regimen, follow it to a T... then go in on them and cry foul when it didn't work.

back in the day it was all about WnGs, getting the ultimate curl definition, hair typing was huge, everybody was looking for the perfect gel or product combo for their wash and go.

back in the day, it was all about cheap hair products: Aussie Moist, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, V05 Strawberries & Cream, Bed Head Moisture Maniac, Olive Oil Eco Styler.

everyone had a denman brush

KCCC and KCKT were starting to get super popular

most YouTubers had TWAs, videos were very casual.

oh, and if you didn't protective style 24/7 365 your hair would never grow long. it was almost like a sin not to protective style lol. and if you talked about your hair doing fine without PSing, ppl would stay stuff like just you wait until you get to ___ length, then your tune will change lol.

ThatJerseyGirl just described MY back in the day.
You simply washed with any shampoo on the shelf and either towel dried or used a hood dryer. We never heard of conditioner until the jheri curl came out.

kellistarr dyh080 -- I wish I had a sister! I'm da only girl :)

I remember chile...da good ole days lololol. You washed with whatever was there, towel dried, took that same said towel and draped it on your shoulders, sat down in da kitchen in front of the stove and got your hair pressed.

The hair was sectioned, towel dried again, oiled with some APEX pressin grease, and the comb just sizzled right on thru!

And you betta not go outside to play right after you got your done and sweat dat press out eitha!

At night, if your momma was usin da rollers, u had to use paper bags. The brown paper bags that momma had folded up and stashed under da kitchen sink (they were used for trash bags). You opened da bag, tore strips, rolled it up and started rollin ur hair. Then you had to tie da ends of the bags to secure it. It was better than using rollers with the end papers.

We also used those same said paper bags to wrap our school books for book covers. Rememba dat? :lachen::lachen:

Back in the day... natural was not the thing to be, and Dominican and Indian hair products were all the rage. Now it's all about the juices and berries and making your own hair products.

Back in the day

Creme of Nature (CON) shampoo was queen.

Still pouring out likka for that one.

Yep! I did this! Used to color those bad boys too!

Back in the day, my momma got my natural hair laid with a goody brush, ultra sheen, and a bowl of water (to dip the brush). :look:

Now naturals have all kinds of products and techniques to do this.

Back in the day, relaxed hair seemed to always be shoulder-length or shorter.

Now, relaxed hair can grow to any length because of proper techniques. I am so thankful to the relaxed ladies who paved the way for all of us to have healthy relaxed hair. :yep:

Good thread...

This is exactly why one needs to do research and not jump on any and every bandwagon that pops up.

Back in the day when I just joined it was all about SURGE! Ahhh, that yellow and black bottle of liquid gold:lol: Everybody was surgin'!

loved just so you know, they still manufacture the old formula in Jamaica. Its sold throughout the Caribbean, I bought some last time I was home. It's the real deal :yep:

Healthy textures was a free site hosted by macherieamour. It was all about KeraCare and Domincan products. Let's not forget Fotki.
