Lawd have mercy! Are you guys going to critique every little thing that woman does?!

To answer the question, yes I have and my hair is still past APL, healthy, and has not broken off because of it. I don't practice every LHCF rule, I do what works for me and Ateya has said the same.

I used to do it, and it broke my hair off every time.

My mother still does it, and it breaks her hair off.

I don't do it any more because of trial and error and sense, and I would not take it back up.

Rubberbands? I was more surprised that she put all that gel, waited 2 weeks to wash her hair, etc... She can do whatever she wants, I lose no sleep over this, but I'm surprised she's not talking about nursing her hair back to health. It looks very thin compared to last year. If I had done all that with relaxed hair back in the day I would've been bald.

Her exact quote was "something like a rubberband, but it's not". I think she was trying to describe the goody elastic bands, which are fine for your hair.

I was waiting on someone to start a thread on this video

LOLOL.

Girl, as SOON as I saw her do that, I knew someone on LHCF was going to start a thread about it. I KNEW IT!

No offense, OP...just stuff I know that goes on around these parts.

I think your explanation is correct, but not completely clear. While a rubber band was not put on her hair, that is what she wanted to do in the first place, and I think that is what the OP is addressing. In turn, I think BostonMaria was addressing the OP's question moreso than the actual presence of true rubber bands in Ateya's hair.

I watched the video in bits and pieces.

I gathered that she put "something like a rubber band" in her hair, because she could NOT find a rubber band, which is what she originally looked for and wanted to put in her hair.

But no, I do not think she put one in her hair in the end, but instead a thin black hair tie.

I think the OP wanted to know if what she was originally intending to do - put in a rubber band on wet hair - is okay.

Finally, whether goody bands are fine on taught wet relaxed hair is highly debatable on LHCF. You know this, man! :lachen:

Some people can handle that kind of thing there's no two heads the same ya know. She's been doing what she been doing and got her hair to almost APL -until the infamous sew-in take out anyways- so whatever works for her. She has some cute styles that people can use for reference but I would have to tweak it for my hair type cause my hair would be lookin pitiful right now if I glopped that much gel in my hair D:

I think that's the point. Our hair is all different, some of us can tolerate a lot of (what others may perceive as) 'abuse' whereas others are only able to manage very simplified means of haircare. If Ateyaa has no problems in the methods she uses then hey, if it's not broke you don't need to fix it.

I'm so sick of seeing this chicks name! Why are folks always on her jock?

I'm natural so my opinion might not count, but I dislike rubber bands in general, whether hair is wet or dry.

Yeah, I knew this video would definitely turn into a new thread!

I personally could care less what she does with her hair, but her hair was a HAM in that video. All those globs and globs of gel were a no no.

You're right. That gel was over the top!
I look back and shake my head (about myself) because I used to use that much gel back in the day. No wonder my hair was suffering, but hey...if it works for her.

You and be both! Those gel pony tails, finger waves and french rolls. I was the gel queen.

I agree, if it works for her then so be it.

I use rubberbands a lot. I use them when I do my ponytail sets and on the ends of my twists. Rubberbands aren't jagged or rough or anything so the only way I can see getting damage is if they get tangled up in your hair. If you're careful they won't. I just break or cut mine off when I want them off.

When I was younger my mom never let me sleep in them or anything else around my plaits....she always took everything off of my hair before bed. I think if you sleep in them there is a lot more risk of damage because the hair gets tangled into the rubberband.

I use ouchless rubberbands on wet hair and have for years. It has never caused breakage for me. Like Pokahontas said, I don't sleep with them though.

That whole video is a straight up mess! stringy see-through hair, brown gel..ateya just need to call it a lost and do big chop.

personally i was looking forward to this post because i look to ateyaa for a bunch of stuff but i like the second opinion of lhcf. i dont think its entirely an Ateyaa lynch mob over here, but because she portrays herself as someone who knows how to take care of hair can you fault people for openly critiquing a video that was purposely uploaded for the public's viewing? naaah not at all

and she's not the only youtuber that's been questioned on her methods, she's just the most active updater

Like some people have said different things work for different people. This includes, products, techniques, and hair assessories. :)

I am just wondering, if her hair practices or so messed up, why are any of you watching/subscribing to her videos? I just don't agree with what she does, but there's no use of me making a big deal about it because 99% of Black women I know, I don't agree with their hair practices.

I like her personality and she has other videos other than hair. To me, it's a public blog (just video). I think one can watch without agreeing with her hair practices. I have friends that do things that I don't like, that doesn't mean I don't talk to them.
Some folks, however, do seem to get really up in arms about her videos though.

Just an honest question. How does she do the above? I know she constantly says what works on her hair works for her. She stresses it over and over again. Just wondering how she does the above in your opinion. Thank in advance!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyUmztQEPWA

the first 30 seconds

and then she continues to discuss HER hair regimen and it works for HER but she introduces the vid as how YOU TOO can get her like HER
sounds like an instructional to meeee

I am a subscriber to her channel and if I don't like/agree with something she does, then I don't do it. If you watch her other videos you know she uses certain things that may be questionable to some but so what it's her hair. She is just showing what she does. It's all about what works for your own hair and if you don't like rubber bands or any kind of hair band, don't use it. Alot of people will not join lhcf but they will definitely be on youtube watching the favorite hair video because they like the end results- so just tweak their process. Just my opinion.
