Well, seriously, "long" seems to be somewhat of a relative and subjective term. I have friends who consider my hair long, but I'll only consider it long when it reaches brastrap. Of course, when it reaches brastrap, that won't be long anymore. I'll then consider midback to be long . . . and on and on.

I agree, not until bra strap!
And also when my hair hangs beneath my underarms in the front.
I will consider my hair long when it reaches bra strap legnth. Right now its maybe 2-3 inches from this goal. My friends and coworkers consider my hair long now but that's only because their hair is shorter.
When my hair hit armpit/bra-strap I considered it long.
Now, after actually embarking on 'growing my hair long' and LHCF, long to me is still bra-strap (comfortably bra-strap, if not an inch and more longer). Who knows, once I reach bra-strap, I might change my mind about it...
I've always considered hair a couple inches past the shoulders to be medium long; hair between bra strap and the waist is really long; and hair beyond waist length is really, really long.
So with that criteria, I'd say my hair when pressed is really long, but not really, really long
I haven't considered my hair long at all. My hair reaches to my collar bone. I have a long way to go. I'll get to my destination. 18 inches is my first goal.

I don't think I've ever really thought of my hair as long, though my whole life other people have gone on and on about how long it is. Sometimes when I see pictures of myself, I am surprised by how long it looks.
One thing that used to really irk me was when hairdressers would chop off a lot of it without my permission, then say "See it's still long!" Then I'd look in the mirror and it would be too short.
In my college days, I had it cut right to my shoulders and black people who didn't know me before referred to it as long.
When I think of long hair, I think of Crystal Gayle, but I sure wouldn't want hair as long as hers!
Mine is a smidgen from bra strap I won't consider it long till it gets to about the length in this picture. Every touch up time, it get's longer but it's always just never long enough for me.
DON'T CLICK IF OFFENDED BY NUDITY ON ANY LEVEL. THIS PIC IS OF NAOMI CAMPBELL PARTIALLY NUDE, ALTHOUGH TASTEFULLY AND BEAUTIFULLY SHOT.
I think it's interesting that most posters, myself included, don't think of hair as long until it passes bra strap. It's so funny that once you join LHCF, your entire perception of "long" totally changes!!!
Most people outside our forum would consider most of our hair to be long! But I think what's interesting and great about this forum is that now, we as women of color are comparing our hair to non-Black standards of long, instead of what most Black folks traditionally consider long. There is a subjective difference within our race of what long is, b/c a lot of Black women don't have long hair. I'm glad that we're challenging the stereotypes and pushing ourselves to think outside of the box. Who knows, we may take over someday!
I have the same "them - not me" perception. My hair doesn't FEEL long to me. It won't until I get to waistlength. I used to think I'd feel that way about BS - but I'm almost there (an inch away) and I don't feel it.
I know many people whose hair is just past their shoulders and it looks long to me...
I don't think I will ever consider my hair long- even if it ever gets to waist legnth, I will want it to my butt, if it reaches my butt, I wll want it to my knees!!

I totally agree!!!

I have to jump right in because I totally agree with this also
i think it just puzzles most other black women when i'm like nah, it's not long--this is a nice length but it's not long. i like the fact that i'm not "boxed in" anymore into thinking anything that is past my chin and even is long
i think that's like placing limits on yourself. like for me my goal is midback (nice length but still manageable i think
) when it's there i know i will want just "one more inch"
A few years ago I used to consider a woman who has the same length of hair as mine (is currently), as having long hair. Now that I'm that length, I don't consider it long at all. Maybe as soon as I hit bra strap.

I agree too! I love thinking outside of the box
and one day we will take over. It's this kind of thinking that has gotten us this far already. Besides LHCF, I see more black women than ever before wearing their own long manes.
I think my hair is getting long. When I look at it I don't think it's long and it's a few inches from brastrap. I think my cousins hair is 3-4 inches longer than mine but it looks long to me.
She told my my hair is getting really long. I just can't see it. But when I'm out I notice that my hair is the same length as white girls I thought had long hair, not exactly braclasp, but definately past the shoulders.
I don't think I will think my hair is long until it gets to waistlength. That's sad isn't it? I'm afraid to ask others if my hair looks long because I don't want them to think I'm trying to show off, but I need a subjective opinion besides my own because I know what I am going to think.
