As your hair get longer

do people view you differently? Do you view yourself differently. I'm talking about like when you walk in a room and some people are waiting to see how much your hair has grown from the last time they saw you. Do people look at you in a different light even though your the same person. Do your personalty change for the better the longer your hair gets. Things like that.

EX. The longer my hair gets people seem to think I'm taking better care of myself. I don't get it but that's what they think.

EX 2. The longer your hair gets, you can go from being average to being stuck up, even though the only thing that has change is your hair.

No one - except my cat has seen my hair lately, but I've even stopped telling peole that I'm growing it out! :perplexed Comments like:

"Why be bother with long hair"

"We don't have the hair gene" (from my sister - no clue what this means)

"Is it still growing"

"What are you going to do with LONG natural hair" (implying that LONG hair can only be pretty if relaxed.)

I know these people are going to have a COW when I finally reveal my ultimate length - but this is their problem, not mine.;)

i've experienced both these reactions both when i was relaxed and now as a natural. when i started 5th grade at a middle school in another district, i didn't know anybody. and the girls all treated me like crap because my hair was 30 inches long at the time... literally no one would talk to me for 3 weeks. then my mom asked some lady to do my hair for picture day, and she didn't realize my hair was relaxed so she busted out the old school hot comb and basically sizzled my hair off. i had to have my auntie (who was not yet a stylist) cut my hair into a chin-length bob with bangs. when i went to school all the girls wanted to know what had happened, and suddenly they were wanting to be my friend.

and i kept my hair around shoulder length for years after that just so i wouldn't be ostracized like that again... ridiculous...

basically if you are taking good care of yourself (or bad) your skin, hair and nails are tell-tale signs. i'm not getting enough iron, and my nails have those nasty ridges in them. :perplexed healthier people tend to have healthier hair... it's a natural correlation. :D

my family are the only ones who are really obsessed with my hair length. guess i freaked them out when i cut it all off... my mom in particular. mostly they are interested in seeing it when i straighten it. they always ask, "so what do you plan to do with it now?" as if seeing my hair straight will suddenly make me change my mind about wearing it natural. um no... why would i relax it again when i can have the best of both worlds? i just look at them like their stupid and say, "exactly what i've been doing with it - let it grow." :look:

once i reach my hair's ultimate length, i don't plan to keep it that long. i'm kinda liking my hair at this length. so i'll probably end up chopping it and they'll be shocked once again... :D i'm so wrong...

Depends...I've always been accused of having a stuck-up air about me, from when it was bob-cut to Mid back extentions. I always experimented with different styles and lengths growing up, nor was I new to extentions so..I don't know, I think I just carry myself the same regardless, but I get what you're talking about.

I noticed an immediate personality switch in one of my friends years back when I did her braids. 2 of them actually, her and her sister, and man..after it was done, I remember sitting in the room with them and they were talking louder, laughing harder, and swinging it from the front to the back, it just all turned into a performance or a sitcom. I was in the cut just looking back and forth and no lie, my exact thought was, "Oh God, I done created some monsters."

-I know exactly what you are saying though--some people do tend to call girls with longer hair (& pretty faces) stuck up, especially other females. I had a friend, jonie, who is mixed and whose hair is constantly growing. She has beautiful long hair that is midback or a little longer, and I remember a girl asking me about jonie's "ways." The girl was pretty much calling jonie stuck up and I told her that she really didn't know jonie like I did and that why should jonie have to come speak to her. She could've introduced herself to jonie. Jonie and I were just alike: We laughed, we had fun, we socialized on some level but for the most part we were two sweet, good-looking, confident and mostly quiet people.

-Personally I think having long healthy hair is something to be proud of just as much as having short thick healthy hair. It seems like nomatter what you do people will find something to say about you especially when they don't even know you. I also think that people can see when someone is happy or pleased with herself whether it's about body, hair or just beauty. There is nothing wrong with taking pride in the way you look. I feel like this, "Your insecurities are not my problem. Deal with it or get yourself together."

I'm talking about while your hair is growing from short to long. Are people starting to view you differently? like your not the same person even though you are or you are starting to change and they are not accepting your change.

I feel like you do get slightly different treatment when you have long hair. I have always had clear skin and long hair and for the most part everyone called me stuck up or at least thought I was in school, I don’t know if this is totally because of my hair or if it has to do with the fact that I am shy so I never really went out of my way to talk to people.

But I do notice if I have on a short wig black females seem slightly more friendly to me, I donno if its my imagination or truth????

I believe people do. Anytime something positive happens to someone, a lot of times people wished that it happened to them but are not willing to work at it to make it happen. There will be some to tell you positive things, but for the most part with my experiences, people find a way in wishing your good was there good. This is a strong charateristic of a hater. You gotta love them. :)

I also wanted to add that whenever you go through a transition with something....whether it's devoting your life to God, eatting right, not going out as much, growing your hair......whatever it is, people either support you or are against you. There is no inbetween.

Nah, I wouldnt say that people treat me any differently. I usually wear my hair in a bun..... and on the few occasions that i do wear it down, i get lots of compliments. But they all are genuine, nice, and seem to be coming from a good place. No one acts any differently toward me though. They are just happy to see me take down the bun, i guess.

In terms of how i view myself...... my confidence has grown a lot with my hair. Ive always wanted to have long hair, and opted for weaves in the past.... and although i looked and felt good then, there's just something about the hair actually being YOURS that feels mad good. I didnt appreciate that until i learned to take care of it, and it started growing. Now i feel just, i dunno, prettier, more feminine, soft, etc. Although i felt all those things in the past, its increased all around!

I completely understand. I'm in braids 99% of the time now but as my hair is getting longer it's like i need the rest of me on the level that my hair is going to be. It sounds a lil crazy but I'm like while my hair is hidden I need to step up ever thing els from head to toe to match my hair.
