Naturals-Does styling get Easier As Your Hair Gets Longer?

Ladies, is it easier to do braids or twists as your hair gets longer? It's hard to practice this style with my hair. It's not a twa, but I don't think it's medium sized yet. Can you ladies give me style options other than a wash n go?

Yes it does!!! At this point in the stage...I wear my hair up with nice hair clips and jewels that makes it look so pretty. There are also really nice headbands that will look nice too. I wear pony puffs more and I do straighten my hair too to get a totally different look just for a change...makes me feel better and less bored with the same ole styles.

Until our hair grows to the length we want, we have to be a little more creative with styles. You can do it!

I really enjoyed doing two strand twist and wearing two strand twistouts when my hair was less than 3 inches. I looved the textured knotty afro look.
How long is your hair now Tex?

I have 2-3" of hair in my hape and 4" in the other areas. My problem is technique. I don't have one. I am tryin to figure out how to put a twist style in my hair. I don't have enough hair on my right side to complete it. I need to learn how to put the style in rows and how to part it to make it look right. Can u give me some tips, please?

DDtexlaxd, I had problems with getting twists right too. My hair is the same length as yours is. I'm not sure what twist style you're trying to achieve, but this is what I tried, and I was actually confident to leave the house with them in. I gave up on parting my whole head, and instead used the tail end of a rattail comb and divided my hair in two sections, ear to ear. Then I made my side part in the front. I did do individual parts in the front section. For the back, I made horizontal parts and just grabbed and twisted in every section. I used two mirrors while doing it. I didn't do parts in back because I knew it wasn't gonna happen. I think it turned out pretty good. HTH

Yes, it definitely does get easier as your hair gets longer.

As far as technique - practice! play! That's how I learned how to do my hair (and I still can't pull off a cornrow I'm willing to walk out of the house with). Sometimes, I'll just spend an hour or two in the bathroom, messing around with my head, doing and redoing styles until I can get them just so.

I know what you mean about your hair being shorter on one side of your head - the left side of my head is about 2-3 inches shorter than everywhere else, because the hair over there is 4b, and it + dye + bleach = breakage! I learned to 'favor' that side of my head. So - for example, when I am doing twists across my head - I always start them on the right side, so that by the time I get to the shorter left side, I'm finishing up the twist, and the shortness doesn't matter as much. Also - if I'm doing some sort of 'out' part in the front, I'll be sure to put the part MUCH closer to the left side than to the right, so that the fact that my hair is much shorter doesn't stand out as much.

Two things to remember -
1) the smaller/skinner the twists/flattwists/cornrows are, the less length you need to pull off the style.
2) If you have any sort of shrinkage, banding/stretching out your hair (get it wet, comb it out, put it is as few twists as you can pull off - and they don't have to be cute) let it dry, then comb it out again dry with a little conditioner/hairbutter on it - it'll allow you to have the most length possible to work with.

As far as parting goes - if you hair is damp/oiled/buttery, parting goes SOOO much easier. Also, the narrower your comb is, the better. I part with a rattail comb - it doesn't get anywhere NEAR combing my hair, but the thinness of the comb makes for neater parts. Also - ya need TWO mirrors. I'm blessed to have a built in 3-way mirror in my bathroom, and I can't imagine parting without two mirrors (at least) so that you can see what you are doing. You might also want to try 'feeling' out your parts - then I'm two strand twisting my hair, I jsut get a rough 'idea' of where the parts are - perfection isn't crucial...

i def think soo too because you can do various styles..like lower puffs twists braids and puff it out..or curl it up wash/go straighten..which im scared to do..but experiement lol it curls right bak.... the possibilities are endless..im soo happy that im natural..at 6 months from natural i have soo many options i cant wait until a year!! I think the ease of styling is almost the same but the styles may change slightly because of length. For right now though you can do pretty styles. Styles like palm rolled hair, 2 strand twsts, wash n go, and puff, straw set, etc. Just take some time and expirament with what you think is cute. I would look at some styles online to see what appealed to me as well.

:notworthy Yay! Thank you all for helping me out. I'm surrounded mostly by relaxed ppl who look down on me now since I BCD. This is my 6th time at this and this time, I'm determined to keep going despite the haterade all around me. I found out why my finger curls looked ugly. I forgot to wet my hair as I was experimenting. My hubby said I looked like Don King and believe me, I did. This is the longest my natural hair has ever been and I'm very excited about it. No more heat for me til I can use my maxiglide. That will prob be 5 or 6 months in the future. I'll be practicing and clicking pics as i go along. I like detailed info, so don't apologize for posting a long comment. I like to learn new things. Keep yoir tips coming!

I say absolutely yes! As the hair grows it gets a little heavier and then the curls stretch out. I section my hair when I comb or detangle. I NEVER have a problem with tangly hair as it grows out.

The twists I do I moisturize FULLY before combing and twisting. This ensures some kind of slip when combing. I even wash my hair in twists, then when I am done I just re-do each section..very simple, no tangles, no breakage. But I do wear only a few twists that I wear in a ponytail (9 to be exact).

Well for me styling is easy at any length. The challenge is making sure that I have the time to section off my hair to detangle, wash, condition and so forth. That for me is where the challenge is. I know at certain points of length for me, my hair was totally doing it's own thing. Thoes inbetween stages for me suck! I like it either short or long.

My hair was easiest to style when I did my 2nd BC last spring (down to 3 inches). I dunno, maybe cuz my hair is super thick that's why I have trouble with it the longer it gets? Different strokes for different folks I guess

I feel like I have more styling options now that my hair is longer. I can just put my hair in pnoytail or bun and go. I never really had a problem styling my hair though regardless of the length.
