Someone.....please help me get over the fear of using the 'hard' Aphogee. I want to do it but I am so afraid of it for some reason. Which is the hard one? I have many moisturizers to use afterward. Step by step, please??????????

Im afraid of it, too. But if your hair isnt breaking, I wouldnt use it. Thats just my opinion. Ill just stick with my mild protein treatments.:look:

Shunta, my crown area near my center part is breaking.
Oh Im sorry. I didnt realize that. I just looked in your fotki and your hair is nice!:) What do you think is contributing to the breaking?

Honestly, don't know but I noticed short, 3 inch hairs along my part sticking up prior to my touch-up. The hairs may simply be new growth I hadn't noticed before.

I do this every six weeks...before I apply it to my hair, I comb my wet hair with a fine tooth comb very carefully (normally not reccommended, this is the only exception to combing wet hair) - this avoids any tangling. After I apply it I comb it thru with a large toothed shower comb. Hair is combed all back.

I harden it with a blow dryer on a low heat setting to avoid any manipulation of the hair.

The key is not to manipulate it at all and it must be combed thru before you apply it.

When I rinse it out, I let the water genlty rinse it out. I dont put my hair on top of my head to rins it out. I tilt my head back and let the water fall from my forhead to my ends. While the water is falling, I genltly squeeze the product out making sure I squeeze from roots to tip in the same direction that the water is falling.

I use Aveda Damage Remedy as a deep conditioner with heat for about 20 min after rinsing. I dont comb until I have completed my deep conditioning.

I think the results are excellent. No breakage immediatly. Be sure to moisturize your ends daily after application. (Its a best practice either way actually)

Good Luck!

It's okay to use it as long as you don't over use it. The key is to make sure that you deeply moisturize your hair immediately afterwards using a good deep conditoner. I only use the product alone arond 2 to 3 times a year. I do, however use the product about 6 to 8 time a year mixed in with my pre poo treatment. I'm not sure if anyone else uses it this way but it works well for me. (I put in my pre shampoo treament then I put a little of the Aphogee Treatment for damaged hair over it. I leave it in for around an hour or I'll leave it in over night. Sometimes I sit under the dryer with this mixture in my hair. It works like a charm. Also when you use it this way it doesn't harden that much, usually not at all. Afterwards, you just proceed to shampooing as usual, making sure for finish with a deep conditioner.);)

What I do is:
~Clarify (Nexxus Aloe Rid).
~Apply Aphogee (I pour a little in my hands at a time and just apply to ALREADY detangled hair, I don't comb throught after saturating my hair because it has already begun to dry in some places and I don't want to risk breaking my hair)
~I dry completely under hard bonnet dryer (DO NOT BOTHER HAIR AT ALL WHILE DRYING OR DRY)
~Once dry I rinse completely w/warm water ONLY feeling my hair in different places to feel if it's rinsed out completely.
~I then shampoo w/Nexxus Therapee (moisturizing poo of your choice)
~Then I DC w/Nexxus Humectress (moisturizing DC of your choice)

ETA: I take the length of my hair and clip it up w/one clip. Because of the length it's hard for the heat to reach it and I hate that sticky feeling of Aphoghee. I've also learned over the yrs. not to use too much because it will run all over the place. I also started using a bath wrap (the one w/the velcro on it) so that way there is nothing on my neck/shoulders and arms.

Has anyone tried applying Aphoghee from a spray bottle? I'm thinking of trying that in about 5 wks. Sometimes I mix it w/EQP Intensive Treatment or Nexxus Emergencee to make it a little thick (easier to apply by hand).

Good Emphasis -- I use a large shower comb only because I get so paranoid about it tangling. If you keep your head straight, there should not be much need for a 2nd comb thru.

You two stop being scurred!!! LoL j/k

Trust me, there is nothing to be scared about. Just follow the directions and you will be fine.

The hard core one is the one that says Treatment for damaged Hair and that it rebuilds hair structure for 6 weeks.

This is what I do:

1) Shampoo hair with moisturizing shampoo

2) Blot my hair with a towel to soak up excess moisture. (You don't want to get your hair too dry because it is sticky and for me, it makes it harder for me to distribute it through my hair.)

3) Shake the protein treatment up. Apply treatment throughout hair. On the bottle it says to comb it through for even distribution but I never comb it through.

4) Since I only have a bonnet dryer, I use my blowdryer to get it dried into my hair, making sure that I do not agitate it in any kind of way. Do NOT try to comb, brush or mess with your hair in any way. If you do, it will cause your hair to break since it does get your hair really hard.

5) Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

6) Towel dry my hair to soak up excess water.

7) Deep condition for an hour.

Thats it!

Copied/pasted this from the journal section of my Fokti:

After you've tried this ONCE and gotten the initial scare out of the way.... it really becomes quite fun! Watching your hair harden before your eyes, like the helmet of a Warrior Princess, is very cool!

Protein treatments are important when you want to strengthen the hair cuticle, and stop/prevent breakage, split ends, and shedding

1) Two weeks after a touch-up I use the Aphogee protein treatment. After shampooing, saturate hair with the Aphogee treatment. Do NOT comb through. Use your fingers to gently and quickly work it into the hair.

2) Apply heat to the hair, using a hooded dryer or a blow dryer with funnel attachment. You should feel your hair harden, like a helmet. Do NOT try to comb or manipulate your hair during this time. If your hair is long (ie, beyond armpit) make certain to concentrate the heat toward the ends, so that can harden as well.

3) Once your hair is hard all over, rinse the treatment out THOROUGHLY. As soon as the water starts to hit it, you should feel the hair start to soften immediately. At this point, you still dont need to use your fingers/comb to manipulate the air. The pressure from the water will be sufficient to soften the hair.

4) Follow up with the Aphogee Moisturizing Humuctant. I then apply another moisturizing conditioner, usually a cheap condition (ie, Suave Milk and Honey or V05) blended with a few heaping spoons of honey and olive oil. I let this to sit in my hair for about fifteen minutes before rinsing.

*NOTE* It is essential to MOISTURIZE after a strong protein treatment, as overuse of a protein conditioner can cause the hair to become dry and brittle.

5) Moisturize with a generous amount of the ORS Olive Oil OR the Cantu Shea Butter: Break Cure & Strengthening Treatment, put into one plait, and bun to airdry.

*NOTE* An intense protein treatment like this one is ONLY necessary every 6-8 weeks (as needed), and it will keep the hair shaft strong and prevent breakage before it even starts.

I agree! I use Aphogee, too. I think this was a key reason why I was able to gain more length.

Oh, one more thing that i forgot to add...... i find it best to do this without a shirt on (well actually Im butt-naked, but maybe thats tmi  ) But i digress.......

The reason why its best to be shirtless is because as your hair starts to harden and dry, it sticks to the surface of whatever it is touching. If you have a towell around your neck, or a shirt on, the hair may stick to that..... and you may not be able to remove it without tearing the hair.

I do find that as my hair hardens/dries, it sticks to the skin of my back. While the sensation of that is very annoying, it's best not to try to peel it off.... because you risk breaking the hair. Also, try not to move your head around too much if its stuck to your back, because you may inadvertently tear/break the hair.

As you can probably tell, your hair is VERY fragile during this whole hardening stage..... however, just be very cautious and vigilant during this process, and you will see that it is WELL worth the hassle!!!! :D

I do that too:look:

I used the Aphogee treatment for damaged hair the other day, and it seemed like my hair had more elasticity immediately after using it. However, I'd be very careful using this with fragile hair. When it dries, it gets very hard, so be very gentle with your hair when washing it out. I'd suggest not manipulating the hair too much after using this treatment. Ultimately, I'm not sure if it's made much difference in my fragile hair in the long run though. HTH

Co-signing with everyone’s instructions. :yep:

I really like the ApHogee because it works very well, but it is definitely not a pleasant experience.

Like Kini wrote, I must also emphasize the importance of not wearing clothing  , or draping a cape (or bath towel if you don’t have a cape) over your shoulders because it tends to drips and gets sticky as it dries. Very disgusting with the smell and all. Also, keep some paper towels handy to wipe up any that runs down your neck or face.

Also, really rinse for at least the full 5 minutes. Water conservation goes out of the window with this treatment. And make sure you rinse your hair thoroughly and completely, otherwise you may have breakage. I usually rinse for a couple of minutes with a good, strong spray to loosen my hair up before agitating my hair to rinse all of the product out.

Your first time using the product may be a bit daunting as your hair dries to a crisp, but just drape yourself, rinse your hair very well, and deep condition your hair and you’ll be fine. To me, ApHogee is a necessary “evil” so I grin and bear it and have nice, strong hair out of the deal.

How long would you say the drying process is, or anyone for that matter?

I really can't stand for my hair to dry on my skin with the Aphrogee.:ohwell: My solution is to apply it with my hair in four sections, and lightly wrap each section so it is not hanging. Sometimes I use 4 metal clips to hold the sections. I then continue with drying until hard, rinsing, and moisturising.

You broke that down so nicely, that's exactly what I've done over the past 2 1/2 years while using it (except I have a hooded dryer).;)

Shunta, thanks for the complement! Thanks, everyone for the tips; would've had a fit with the Aphogee sticking:eek: to fabric part not knowing that would happen. Still a bit timid but going to give it a try, may start with one big section of hair to see what happens then if all goes well I'll isolate that portion and do the rest. The advice is appreciated.

Good luck!!!!!!!!

And girl, dont worry about doing a trial run with a sectin of hair.... just do the whole thing. Its really not that scary once you've done it. :)

This is a great idea! Thank you. I plan to do that for my next treatment. The last time I did the treatment, my hair was stuck to my skin and I had to be extremely careful with every move I made. It was soooo unpleasant. I tried to pile my hair on top of my head but it didn't work without a clip and I didn't want to risk using any clips.

Anyhow, the advice in this thread is excellent! After you try it the first time, you shouldn't have any problems. Just make sure to follow the instructions on the bottle and you're good to go. The tips in this thread really help make the process easier.

c/s especially the bolded part.

Honestly, there really isn't anything to be afraid of. Just be confident in your abilities and follow the instructions and tips in this thread and you'll be fine.

You're welcome. That's what I like about this forum, we all get ideas from one another.:)

ok i just may give it another shot!
i was going to return it
i tried it 2 weeks ago and i made the mistake of not detangling my very curly natural hair prior 2 the experience:eek:
it made the aphogee very difficult to apply

my hair is pretty stong but i decided to try this treatment
b/c i noticed my "new growth" is a lot stronger than my colored ends
and i really want to protect my ends for growth retention
i will try again in 6 weeks with this great advice!

Great advice. I wanted to buy this today at Sally's b/c I would have gotten the moisturizer free but of course there weren't anymore.:ohwell: They had the old bottles of the Hard treatment and the newer bottles of the 2min treatment (which now just say Keratin treatment).

Since I'm only reaching 7 weeks post on my 10-12 week stretch. I'll buy it another time.:)

Just did an APHOGEE treatment about 3 hours ago and I believe it's a keeper.:) It was a simple enough process but the stuff stinks!:perplexed  I think naturals with fine and/or fragile hair should not sleep on this stuff. I already feel a difference. I've only seen a few tiny hairs in my comb which is a major event for me. Because of the crazy weather we've been having my hair had been a bit more brittle than usual.

+I shampooed with Aveda Sap Moss. +Blotted some of the moisture from hair. +Poured a few capfuls of Aphogee on my hair. +Rubbed it down the length gently. +Ran a warm blow dryer over my head until it hardened. +Rinsed with warm water in the shower. +Applied Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer. +Rinsed the moisturizer out after 5 mins.

Like folks have already said it's not as scary as sounds once you actually do it. I'm looking forward to my next treatment. Thanks again to Chicoro for posting pics of her Aphogee treatment in fokti.:D
