I have got a new job and I plan on wearing weaves til spring of next year. MY question is HAS ANYONE GROWN THEIR HAIR TO BRA STRAP LENGHT WITH JUST WEAVES ??????????? :ohwell: I CANT WEAR MY HAIR IN JUST BRAIDS anymore help ya sista out! ANY INFO would be greatly appreciated

much love - :yep:

Yeah, several of us want to know as well. I am trying to finish out the year with a stretch. I'm thinking about a sew-in.

I'm about 2 inches away and I started wearing weaves more than a year ago - I was about shoulder length when I started. I believe Renice (sp) and someone else I don't remember her name but she started or is a leading participant in the "hide your hair til XXX" challenges. HTH

DTG, that's WONDERFUL news!! :clapping:

I have some questions:

1. Did wearing weaves keep you from relaxing?
2. Did you wear cornrows underneath your weave?
3. How often were you able to wash?
4. Did you lose a lot of hair when you did remove the weave?

If I am able to do this, I will probably commit to 6 months in 2008 of weaves, then relax.

I'm trying to relax 1 every 6 months. This time around will be 5 months. In the past I have relaxed 3 months, then gradually increased to 4 months, now 5 months.

I have some questions:

1. Did wearing weaves keep you from relaxing? No I would take my hair out and relax every four months. I think if you go to Dominicans and get your roots blown out during the critical points you will be fine!

2. Did you wear cornrows underneath your weave? I mainly wear sown in tracks - on two occassions I had a little more than half sown (this was corn braided)

3. How often were you able to wash? If I used my MTG or a variation I would wash every 9 days. If didnt and obtained a good blow-out I would go every 3 1/2 weeks w/o a wash (I wrapped my hair every night)

4. Did you lose a lot of hair when you did remove the weave?
YES. that is the ONLY down side - I will update my fotki this week and put in a picture of the hair I lost. But I still weave and I think I am just sloppy with taking out my weave. I will work on it next time I take out my weave.

HTH

Two of my girlfriends have been very successful with this method :)
(Once chica is a texturized 4b and went from above SL to just above BSL, the other is a natural 3c and went from SL to MBL...both took about 18 months)...but unfortunately this didn't work for me:ohwell:

I asked them what they did and here's what I was told:

Get a professional weave install with high quality hair
Make sure the braids aren't too tight...they both stressed this
They went back to the salon every 2-3 weeks for washings, relaxers, ect.
Neither used heat more than once a week
Had hair 're-installed' every 2 months or so

..but once again, I guess it just depends on the head because I tried this and lost a couple of inches on the ends because I couldn't get to the braided hair underneath to moisturize it well :perplexed Maybe this method isn't for me because my hair is much thinner than theirs.

I'm in the process now. So, far i may be at BSL. I've kept progress in my fotki. I'm post 13 or 14wks and decided to wait until Dec 20th to relax(maybe:grin:). I always get great results from Sew-ins

I don't know if wearing a weave will get you to BSL, but I'll let you know.

1. Did wearing weaves keep you from relaxing? No, as a matter of fact, I have to be careful because I'm a 4B and I wash my hair every 1-2 weeks. My hair matted up when I went four months without a perm, so if your hair is very course, I wouldn't advise not perming for more than 3 months.

2. Did you wear cornrows underneath your weave? Yes, my hair is braided under a net.

3. How often were you able to wash? Every 1-2 weeks, however wearing the net makes it really difficult. You have to get creative and be careful not to use a heavy moisturizing shampoo (i.e. QP) because it will create a residue that will be impossible to rinse fully out.

4. Did you lose a lot of hair when you did remove the weave?
Yeah, but from what I'm told, it's about the same amount I would have lost combing my hair over 2 months.

One thing that I can say is that I very rarely have to put heat on my hair - even the part that is out and it's exciting to see the growth when you take the weave out and perm it.

I have some questions:

1. Did wearing weaves keep you from relaxing?yep, it helped me strecth them out or months at a time
2. Did you wear cornrows underneath your weave? yes, very small ones so that it looked as natural as possible
3. How often were you able to wash? I washed once a week
4. Did you lose a lot of hair when you did remove the weave? no not really just shedded hair I keep my hair pretty moisturized underneath

Ladies who say they wash, blow dry and flat iron, you are doing this to the weaved hair; or, do you take down the weave, wash, etc.? I'm a bit confused. You do all the maintenance to the weave and you wash the cornrows underneath, right? Thanks. I'm ignorant of this. I've never worn a weave before...;)

1. Did wearing weaves keep you from relaxing? Yes, I used a weave to grow my hair out for a year (I had it taken down every 6 weeks) I didn't get a relaxer the entire time and I had my old relaxed ends snipped off gradually with each take down.
2. Did you wear cornrows underneath your weave? Yes, I had cornrows underneath. My stylist used the 'zig -zag' method/pattern.
3. How often were you able to wash? I washed my hair once per week and sometimes twice when it was really hot or when I worked out.
4. Did you lose a lot of hair when you did remove the weave? No, and that was my biggest fear. If I had lost a lot of hair whenever I had my stylist take it down I would have taken that weave out immediately. I only lost a few shed hairs when she took my hair down. I was paranoid and always checked in the mirror all over when she took it down and kept my eye on her comb when she was combing it out...lol. She would laugh at me...lol.

My hair grew out from above ear length (Halle cut) to a little past shoulder. Had I kept the relaxed ends on I would have definitely been APL when I had my final take down. I went completely natural while in the weave and didn't know if I wanted to be natural once the weave was out or not (which is why I had the relaxed ends cut off gradually). I ended up relaxing because that's what I was comfortable with at this time.

ETA** BSL is my goal. Right now I am approaching APL..very near it. I had my weave taken out in June.

Two of my bff's grew their hair to BSL w/sew-ins. One has super thin hair now as a result, along with about 5 inches worth of damaged hair. The other one's hair looked okay, but after wearing it down every day and getting it flat ironed every 2 weeks, her hair broke off to APL w/split ends. She just got her weave redone and is trying to start over. Hopefully this time she'll take better care of her hair.:ohwell:

ETA: I grew my hair to BSL last year from sew-ins, but I had to get it cut to APL because of the damage.

I wish I could get an appointment with Reneice - I tried to last November and she was not taking any new clients. Maybe she can refer you to someone in the meantime????

You can wash, blow dry, and flat iron w/ the weave in. After washing, I would wait until the braids underneath were almost dry and then moisturize. Then I would add product, blow dry the weave straight and flat iron smooth w/ some heat protectant.

Hope I did not confuse you - I washed my hair/ the weave all together - like it was all my hair. I would take the weave out only when I hit the three month mark.

Someone just bumped up a HYH thread - her name is Rabia- she's not BSL yet but she went from SL to almost BSL

(hope they don't mind me calling them out)

This is why I had mine taken out finally. I wanted to keep it in longer but didn't want to test my luck....LOL. My hair truly stayed healthy and is still healthy now. I'd say it is healthier even than it was before the weave and that weave was my very first one. I had also planned to get a sewn in for 12 weeks every year until I reached my goal of BSL but I'm not sure now. I thought I would have the urge to cut (which is why I got a sewn in to begin with..to hide my hair to keep from cutting it)...but I don't have that urge at all since it's almost APL now. I guess you have to get past that awkward stage in order to curb the desire to cut:yep:. Thanks for sharing your experience.

This is what scares me. :nono:

It's gonna be a while dear...I've been on the list since April and I just got an e-mail the otherday asking for contact information so that I might be able to set up an appointment soon.

Did your friends take care(wash regularly, deep condition, moisturize, etc) of their hair while they were wearing weaves? Also, how long did they normally keep their weaves in?

Thanks, new friend! ;)

Who's Reniece, by the way? Where is she located? Sounds like she's in high demand. :sekret:

Here's Reniece's fotki. She grew her hair out with the aid of sew-in weaves and her hair is beautiful; thick and healthy. She gives details of her regimen in her journal, in most of her pics and also in the comments as she answers in detail. You can also check out her work in her fotki as well. She is truly an inspiration and very talented.

I did. I took me four years to reach BSL because this was mostly before LHCF, and after LHCF is when it began to take off. However, when I decided to wear my hair out I got so excited about the never before achieved length that I flat-ironed it too often and on high heat that it ended up thinning out on the ends and so I cut it to APL for a fresh start on June 1. Now I'm 2" below APL, and should be about 0.5"-1" away from BSL by the end of the year since I seem to not be getting more than the usual 1/2" per month.

Weave and braids with extensions work wonders for my hair and it get me from shoulder lenght to near bra strap and I 'm back with those protective styles until spring 2008,...but i'm natural:look:
RabiaElaine is the weave regimen specialist for relaxed head here on LHCF she started a thread about her regimen and she initiated HYH challenge she grows her hair with weave she has success with it
I'll post the links later

I'mma post this question here, too, just in case no one saw it in the other thread:

Are you able to use growth aids like BT with your weaves?

Thanks again,

SP ;)

P.S. Darn, I could try to New York to see Reniece, but sounds like she's busy. I wish someone could recommend a good stylist in D.C.:wallbash:

ETA: I just found out that her salon is in Rockville, MD. She's essentially my neighbor! :clapping: However, she is not taking any new clients and is already booked with clients from a waiting list. :( I'mma email her anyway to see if she can recommend someone good in this area.
