Anyone ever have a HAIRCUT from DevaChan?

Curious if any of you ladies have ever gone here for a haircut. For those who aren't familiar with DevaChan, they are a salon that offers a different type of cutting technique for naturally curly heads.

Anyone ever consider them? Like them/hate them?

I was thinking of getting my hair cut there at the end of the month. My hair style now is like Carrot Top, and I'm soooo tired of it, lol!!!

A good friend just got her hair cut at DevaChan. She is very pleased with the results. She got it shaped after wearing her natural hair straight for a long time. Since she plans to wear her hair curly more often, she got it shaped up. Her husband agreed that the shape was much better.

I have only seen photos so far and it does look good to me.

Taren, a youtuber, did a review of her experience at DevaChan.

Taren did go back a second time and she asked that they not use their products. She does like the dry cut.

Thanks ladies for the responses. I've read about Devachan a few times in the past. Never actually saw their 'work' on a WOC hair though. I checked out Taren's videos a couple months back, which prompted me to ask on here.

I'm still considering it. I may just find a salon locally who does curly hair.

Nixx,

Nope, ended up just having my mom cut a few inches off. Didnt matter though, cause I'm in the HYH challenge anyway..

so1913, yes please post your experience.

I believe if you get it done at their salon the prices vary on the stylist. Junior stylist prices start at $85 and they go up from there. Lorraine, I think, is somewhere around $250. The average is around 120ish I believe for the other stylists. However there are salons all over that do the devachan technique. Those are much cheaper so you can try finding salons that cater to doing hair that way.

Well, I finally caved and went to Devachan today. I went to the location on Bway. My appt was with Judy. She was nice and asked what was my reason for coming, which was to remove my "curly mullet" and to add some layers and shape. She asked how I styled my hair, and the type of products I used. My hair curly was hitting my shoulders and she said to even it out, I'd have to bring it to right above my shoulders. I wanted a new look, so I ran with it. I have to say she did an awesome job. Her shampoo/stylist was Gin, and she was sooooo informative. She told me how to "wash" and style my hair. I ended up buying the no poo, conditioner and gel. The cut and style cost about $200 but was definitely worth it for me, to have my "curly mullet" gone!!!

Here are some pics, the first 2 are the after pics and the last is before!!

WOW your hair looks great. I love the way your curls came out after your style. If I wore my hair curly more often I would def be willing to give it a try. Did the stylist give you any interesting tips?

Devachan is the only place I get my haircuts and I LOVE the salon. I love the atmosphere and their techniques. I'm not as much of a fan of their hair products but I let them use them on me anyway. I forget her name right now but I've had the black british woman as my stylist and Melissa; I will say I love my cut with Melissa. I tell everyone around me to get their hair cut and trimmed at Deva. It's totally worth it and I recommend Deva to you all.

ETA: ps- their spa is fantastic as well. very clean and the staff is very professional and friendly.

ETA: OH and another thing, I highly recommend bringing pictures. It is kinda true, they do seem to have a standard haircut that they give everyone (a few people complained of this on Yelp or something). However, the stylists are very open with your preferences and will work with you. On my visit with Melissa, I brought some pics and she worked with my features and the pics of the look I wanted. So, bring pictures if you know exactly what you want.

babyu21, well they told me not to comb or brush my hair, so while I'm washing it, I should use my fingers to "rake/comb" through my hair. They also told me that there's a lot of silicones in conditioners which weigh hair down and don't allow products to truly operate properly on my hair. Once I finishing co-washing my hair, leave my hair dripping wet and put the gel in my hair and either let it air dry or sit under a dryer. I used to put my hair in a high ponytail when I slept, she told me to wear a satin bonnet. If my hair gets a lil frizzy from sleeping, that I should put some of their conditioner and water, rub it together and put it on the frizzy areas.

Nasdaq_Diva...that was my issue, it was more or less all the same length, except for a piece in the back, that was extra long, hence the mullet. I had a coworker cut it once, while dry and the Dominicans while it was wet, but neither worked.

wavezncurlz...the shampoo/stylist Gin's hair was shoulder length, but more wavy, than tightly curled and she had her hair done there also. The reason mine was short, is because I wanted layers and she had to even it out, because of the different layers. Since your hair is longer, I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue. It's funny because most of the stylist/shampoo ladies there, were curlies, with different textures and lengths.

cool thanks. I was checking out the vids on their site and yeah, I saw a couple of longer haired girls. I had only seen yours and Taren's so I wasn't sure. Thanks!

NO PICTURES YET. Sorry folks, I still haven't replaced my camera...maybe I'll take pics sometime this week on my phone (they don't come out very good), but until then, you'll just have to take my written testimony lol.

Just got back and my experience was a great one! First off the salon atmosphere is very nice and the staff so extremely professional and friendly. There are aaaallll types of women and men in the place, both patrons and stylist. I ended up seeing April, the stylist that Taren saw and recommended in her youtube videos and she was exactly how she described her. She handled my 50 million crazy textures like a champ and without flinching lol. She was very confident and had this "I got this" vibe which was reassuring. She asked me tons of questions about what I do regularly, what I didn't like about my current hair state, how I felt about past cuts/current shaping, how much it's grown since the last cut, and then giving feedback in response and explaining what needed to be done shaping wise to address the issues I was personally having with my hair. She explained what she was going to do with my hair as far as cutting the various textures of my hair (which had never been addressed before really since my hair has always been cut straight and treated the same throughout), giving shape to the top loser curls up top while keeping the length of the hair in the back by just trimming it. She was proactive in talking about me growing out my hair asking what my ultimate goal was as far as growing it out. Of course I filled her in on my habit, despite me wanting to grow my hair out, I end up cutting my hair out of boredom or frustration with all the crazy textures. She started talking to me about the process as far as the current "shaping" of my hair (length in the back vs. sides, etc) and how it would need to be trimmed/maintained initially as I work towards the goal of growing it out longer (and to stop chopping my hair off lol). As far as the method, they really do literally cut the hair curl by curl, and when they trim, the take the very tips of the curls off (no fear of them chopping your hair off unless you request that). It was very thorough and precise.

As far as styling, they have the assistants shampoo your hair and apply the product for styling before sitting you under the dryer. She was instructed to use the Heaven In Hair deep treatment and mirror curls (silicone free serum) for styling my hair. I was worried, but it actually came out decent! That was the first time conditioner was successfully used in my hair as a styling product. Before I left, she gave me some styling and maintance tips and instructed me to come back in 5 months and for me not to take scissors to my own hair in the meantime and to let it grow out.

The cost was $115, the least I've ever paid for a "curly hair cutting specialist".

It was a totally positive experience and I will be going back!

so1913,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience as promised. Can't wait to see pics.

Question: Do you have any 4a in your hair? If so, how was she able to cut that fit amongst your 50million textures? I have about just as many textures going on too.

yes I do, the hair between my temples and my ears...it's the weirdest thing because right about that towards the crown its loose and wavy, a completely different texture, so my problem was the looser texture hair was hanging over/longer than the tighter textured hair underneath it. Because they cut your hair in it's naturally curly state (I had very little product, went to work looking a hot mess! lol) they can see how your hair falls naturally and address each curl/texture accordingly.

I'm still nervous  I have 4a around my ears/temples like .5in. Then the back of my head like 1in as well. The rest of my head is 2-3's..dang hot mess!

What do you all think of this salon: http://www.gabzthesalon.com/Our_Staff.html
This stylist here (Brianna) does the DevaChan and charges $80. Should I call and talk to her? What should I ask? I'm scared..lol :look:

At the nape of my neck are tightly defined curls between 3c/4a I guess people would say...(texture titles seem to be subjective) and they have a great deal of shrinkage. Again totally different from my crown, so when I was styling, I'd constantly have to stretch the back to get it to "go along" with what was going on at the top of my hair.

I don't think you have too much more or less going on than I do lol.

It doesn't hurt to call and just describe your texture and express your concerns, swing by the salon for a quick face to face inquiry or see if you can just schedule a consultation (no cut) to get a better feel for what textures comfortable dealing with.

As far as the stylist at the NYC store, none of the stylist seemed to be doing hair that matched their own, everyone seem very knowledgable and versitile!
