Anyone ever have a HAIRCUT from DevaChan?

I'm thinking about going to Devachan to get a trim to get rid of any splits and frayed ends. Since they don't "wash" your hair until after it's trimmed, is it recommended to go in with no product (gel, leave-in, etc.) in your hair?

I put a little product in, to help define and control some of the curls that are just frizz without product. you just don't want to go in with your hair heavily coated and hard with styling products. I don't see leave ins being an issue, and if you do use gel, use very little.

I'm going to get a Deva Cut on Monday by a salon in Chevy Chase that has Deva Cut specialists, so I will update with pics/experience when I get back!

i have a consult ONLY no shaping/cut with anna at the broome st location in aug when i visit friends and family~my friend swears by them and their products so i want to see for myself and i will report back

Let us know how it goes!
I chickened out. I'm not ready to let go of my length yet (and I'd have to let a LOT go with these crazy layers I have in order to get the desired look). I just gave myself a nice cut and I will revisit when I start wearing my hair out more and won't miss the length.

sooooooooo they cut your hair dry!!! i think i may be able to do that!

what is the cost for the cut and i am sure there is a consultation as well?

Maybe it's me but all the cuts look the same to me. Long on top and short on the back.

so1913 is the picture in your siggy your deva chan haircut? I have an appointment next Tuesday with a deva chan trained stylist and I'm nervous!! I am getting my hair shaped so that I can wear it down and curly (I'm TOO sick of my daily bun...).

I have an appointment for a Deva cut on 8/26 and I'm nervous too! Last time I had a try cut was with a barber and some trimmers years ago.

My appointment is with a Devachan trained stylist in my area. Wish me luck!

Well... I didn't have the haircut. I went. I sat in the chair & then I had a huge change of heart. I'm pretty sure the stylist thought I was crazy. But, she was sweet about it.

Solitude theNaturalWonders

I just had a bad feeling. When I got there and the lady saw my hair she seemed a little apprehensive. I asked her if she had done kinky curly hair before and she said yes but in a limited way. She is an approved devachan stylist so I was surprised that she hadn't cut more "corkscrew" curls. I just couldn't do it. I couldn't risk 2 years of hard work flushing down the drain. So, I hopped out of the chair.

[/RIGHT]290753]I want one! :( I hope I can find somewhere over here that does it.

Sheena284 your hair is gorgeous! My daughter's hair is similar to yours and she wants to wear it down more. I need to stalk your fotki for styling tips!

I'm back to report! No pics yet, maybe tomorrow or when I wash my hair again.

Long post warning...

I have a great Deva cut with Tiffany at Hela Salon and Spa in Chevy Chase MD (Friendship Heights). They have a summer curly girl special through August. I chose Tiffany after reading her bio on the salon's website and good reviews on other sites (yelp, etc.). And cause she's black too if I'm being honest.

I washed, DC'ed and detangled my hair last night. Since it's a dry cut, I wanted to go in with clean hair.

She discussed my hair goals with me before cutting. I wanted a nice shape but not to lose major length. She stated that my hair was in good condition () and agreed that it just need a nice shape and not a major cut. Whew! Then she explained the Deva cut, how it reduces bulk and helps the hair hang.

She combed through my hair in sections with a wide tooth comb and only snipped off the very ends after pulling hair taut through two fingers. It looked similar to doing a dry cut on straight hair. She worked all over then went back checking each section as needed.

We talked throughout the cut. I was nervous about how she would style my hair after washing. But she explained how the products and manipulation elongate the hair so it dries with less shrinkage. And she stated that she'd have to do twists on my hair to fight the shrinkage. I was happy as that's my preference -- to stretch with twists. Oh she mentioned that she'd check the cut again after my hair was washed.

Off to shampoo bowl. She cleansed twice with No Poo. Then applied One Condition in sections to sopping wet hair, twisted each section and put a clip on the roots. She stated that leaving condition in works well for my texture since it absorbs it so well (no need to rinse it out, but use it as styling product -- multipurpose!). Also, sopping wet hair is the key to styling and elongation for the Deva method. She does twist rather tight -- my only complaint. Then I went under the dryer for a while.

Out from under that hot dryer. She applied Moroccan oil serum to each twist, squeezing it into the twist. Then she separated the twists for a cool twistout and applied more serum. She also used a diffuser on the roots that were still damp. The final cut was snipping a few ends off some twists. A few twists in the front were still damp at the root so she suggested that I leave those in overnight and take them down tomorrow. Fine with me -- it was late and I was tired. So that's why no pics tonight. She suggested I sleep with a scarf to keep the twists flat against my head.

Okay final review in my next post...

Alright my overall review:

Thanks for putting up with my long detailed post. This will be much shorter.

I had a great salon visit with Tiffany. She took time to educate me about products, the hair cutting technique, and the condition of my hair. We even talked about color for a future visit. Oh she combed my hair gently and only used a wide tooth comb!

I like the Deva cut. The true test will be once I wash my hair and get a true sense of how it looks. But it looked great once she finished the major cutting, before shampooing me.

I highly recommend detangling your hair before doing this type of cut since they do comb dry hair.

ETA: My hair is super soft too. The Moroccan oil helped a lot cause that hot dryer did take a lot of moisture out I think. I will have her turn the dryer down next time. I haven't been under a dryer in ages so I was just unprepared for all that LOL.

Only complaint is the length of the visit -- 3 hours. My hair takes a while to dry and she did spend a lot of careful time doing my twists though.

Can I just say that she made my night when she said that I have fantastic hair . She said it a couple of times too. Glad to know my hard work is paying off!
