I'm back to report! No pics yet, maybe tomorrow or when I wash my hair again.
Long post warning...
I have a great Deva cut with Tiffany at Hela Salon and Spa in Chevy Chase MD (Friendship Heights). They have a summer curly girl special through August. I chose Tiffany after reading her bio on the salon's website and good reviews on other sites (yelp, etc.). And cause she's black too if I'm being honest.
I washed, DC'ed and detangled my hair last night. Since it's a dry cut, I wanted to go in with clean hair.
She discussed my hair goals with me before cutting. I wanted a nice shape but not to lose major length. She stated that my hair was in good condition

and agreed that it just need a nice shape and not a major cut. Whew! Then she explained the Deva cut, how it reduces bulk and helps the hair hang.
She combed through my hair in sections with a wide tooth comb and only snipped off the very ends after pulling hair taut through two fingers. It looked similar to doing a dry cut on straight hair. She worked all over then went back checking each section as needed.
We talked throughout the cut. I was nervous about how she would style my hair after washing. But she explained how the products and manipulation elongate the hair so it dries with less shrinkage. And she stated that she'd have to do twists on my hair to fight the shrinkage. I was happy as that's my preference -- to stretch with twists. Oh she mentioned that she'd check the cut again after my hair was washed.
Off to shampoo bowl. She cleansed twice with No Poo. Then applied One Condition in sections to sopping wet hair, twisted each section and put a clip on the roots. She stated that leaving condition in works well for my texture since it absorbs it so well (no need to rinse it out, but use it as styling product -- multipurpose!). Also, sopping wet hair is the key to styling and elongation for the Deva method. She does twist rather tight -- my only complaint. Then I went under the dryer for a while.
Out from under that hot dryer. She applied Moroccan oil serum to each twist, squeezing it into the twist. Then she separated the twists for a cool twistout and applied more serum. She also used a diffuser on the roots that were still damp. The final cut was snipping a few ends off some twists. A few twists in the front were still damp at the root so she suggested that I leave those in overnight and take them down tomorrow. Fine with me -- it was late and I was tired. So that's why no pics tonight. She suggested I sleep with a scarf to keep the twists flat against my head.
Okay final review in my next post...
