Beauty IS skin deep.
Hey ladies, what's the verdict on leaving regular conditioners in the hair as leave-ins? Conditioners like Silicon Mix and VO5, are they safe to use as leave-ins or not? I keep seeing yay's and nay's about it and was wondering if it's really okay. I thought that leaving those types of conditioners on the hair for those lengths of time would either break the hair off or make it hard. Can anyone testify?

I used some Suave Humectant conditioner in my hair as a leave in...I haven't had any breakage at all, I flatironed it and everything....so far so good. :yep:

Personally I don't like leaving rinse out conditoners in because they make my hair hard and limp. I just don't think they are formulated the same as leave-in's so there's probably something in there that was made to be rinsed out. That's just my opinion on it. I know there are some that leave them in and have no problems.

I use Keracare and Affirm protein reconstructor and put a cap on. Sometimes I’ll add a little Suave, and it’s fine. As long as it all rinses out, I’m pretty much okay! I find for my hair, it’s not just what I use, but how much. After Macherieamour’s tutorials, I’ve really learned how to use a dime or quarter size of each product. And this makes the greatest difference of all! My hair has never felt so silky!:)

^^^ lol ....:look:

i wouldnt try using silicon mix as a leave in :nono: maybe test your hair first. get a section somewhere in back or middle and put on whatever con you want to try as a leave in. throughout the week make a note of whatever changes you see in your hair in that section. experiment, then come back and tell us how it worked ! :)

I've made it a habit to use my regular rinse out conditioners as leave ins, to use like gel. Sometimes it's not good, but I've had good sucess with most of them.

You just have to try it out for yourself.

I have thought about doing the test, but I'm kinda reluctant to try it b/c I'm just too much of a fraidy cat to try it out. I think I agree with Pokahontas. Regular conditioners are meant to be rinsed out and leave-ins are just what they are: meant to be left in the hair. Now don't get me wrong, I'm in no way knocking anyone who leaves regular conditioners in their hair as a leave-in, to each her own. I just had a jar of silicon mix on hand and since I'm kinda in between leave-ins, I just got curious about trying out the silicon mix as a leave-in. I'm going to bait myself up and try it on a small section in the back so that I don't look too jacked up should something go wrong and my hair starts breaking off badly and get bald headed in that spot. At least I'll be able to cover it up :lachen:

I've only used one conditioner as a leave-in and it was a Nexxus Conditioner, away from that I rinse out. Another thing, I don't believe Silicon Mix is a conditioner, I believe it's some type of treatment, I believe it says so on the container..

It depends on the conditioner. If it's high in protein it could cause you damage if you leave it in for a long time.

I've only tried PM Instant Daily Conditioner as a leave-in and I've had good results. Most of the leave-in's I've tried weren't moisturizing enough for me.

I use Mane 'n Tail as a leave-in, but the bottle says that it can also be used as a leave-in. I don't think I would use a deep con as a leave-in other than to leave it in overnight and rinse in the morning.

There are a number of rinse out conditioners that specify on the bottle that they can also double as leave-ins like MNT. Nexxus Humectress and Humectin state this as well. Personally my hair feels particularly moisturized airdrying with conditioners. It really is a matter of personal preference.

Same here. I've been using Suave Humectant as a leave-in for several months no problem. I just use a small amount and it seems to better help my hair stay soft and less frizzy than when I don't use it. I haven't found an actual leave-in or moisturizer that I really like.

i use my vo5 tea tree (or similar light moisturizing conditioner - NO cone-age) as a leave-in alllllllll the time - on soaking wet hair.

as a leave-in i'll use about a quarters' amount per quadrant of hair and concentrate most of it on the ends.

no problems whatsoever. controls frizz and keeps hair moisturized. the conditioner can be revived by just spritzing a bit of water on the hair.

like some of the ladies said, you won't know if or how it works unless you try it.

There is a Silicon Mix leave-in. It's really good too.

i use pantene for curls conditioner as a leave in and it works fine. in fact, i can't imagine dealing with my hair if i don't have a 'heavy' conditioner to work with. but my hair never dries heavy, always light and silky. :yep:

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Humectress. I used it as a leave-in a few months back. I haven't tried Humectin though, so I may have to give it a try when my MNT starts to get low. Thanks! :)

I use rinse out conditioners as leave-in conditioners, often. Give it a try and see what works best for you.

Leave-in just don't work for me. If I use a quarter sized amount of conditioner (usually Herbal Essences or Daily Defense Tender Apple) I'm good and it helps keep the tangles away.

I've used the regular Silicon Mix as a leave in before. It has not caused any problems at all, in fact, my hair is soft shiny and looks very healthy when I use it this way. It's not hard to comb out and doesn't leave it hard or crunchy.

As a matter of fact, last night I took small sections of my hair, sprayed each lightly with moisturizer, dabbed on a small amount of Silicone Mix, then sealed with oil. This morning my hair was beautiful!

Give it a try...you never know what may work for you unless you take a chance.

Agreed. I alternate between Suave Tropical Coconut and Suave Milk & Honey (when I can find it). It's one of the ingredients diluted in my spray bottle I use every day. That was one of the turning points for my hair. I just couldn't find a good, non-drying, non-hair-suffocating leave-in for my hair, so I made my own.

I definitely use regular conditioners as leave-ins. It has made a huge difference in moisture retention for my hair. You really have to experiment and see if it works for you. Not all conditioners will work as leave-ins for your hair. Some will. Some won't. I find that most botanical, moisturising conditioners make excellent leave-ins for my hair. Protein conditioners & Porosity Control does not ... but i'd never know the difference if I didn't try.
