911 HELP - My Coils Haven't Come Back Yet

How long does it take for your coils to return? I got my second blow dry and flat iron since July 2009 (for a trim) and my coils have not returned yet. I'm anxious to say the least. I've washed it twice so far (once was a co-wash). I did henna and used yogurt

I'm thinking of washing this weekend with some baking soda in my shampoo. Any suggestions anyone? I will be so devastated if I have heat damage. :wallbash:

After doing a hardcore protein treatment and the curls haven't came back then you have permanent heat damage.

They're supposed to come back on the next wash. You could try some hardcore protein though.

Wow - a response from you :drunk:!!! OK - define hardcore protein please. I thought I probably used to much with the yogurt and henna. Make a suggestion and I'll get it when I leave work today. The only other time I had heat was last July. I delayed getting trims cuz I was afraid of the heat. They used a heat protectant, I specifically asked. It didn't take this long to revert the first/last time. I'm tryin not to panic.

Sounds like heat damage to me too. Sorry OP, I keep reading about all these positive experiences with using heat. SMH, I'm still not going to risk it for myself. I really do hope, you can bring your coils back, but it sounds like to me, that they are gone.

I do want to add in and just say that you dont' have to use heat in order to get a trim. So many think that's the only way to get a good trim and that is just not the case. HHJ I wish you the best!

HUH? Don't wanna hear that. NO :nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono::nono:

You used henna AND yogurt...both of these things may loosen your curl pattern and pro long reversion.

I hope that is all it is. The coils are not just loosened though - they look non existent.:blush::blush::blush::blush: This didn't happen the first time.

It sounds like heat damage

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :wallbash:

Everyone (stylists) say you have to straighten it to get a trim. I didn't want to do it becuz I was afraid. This will cause me such a set back if its true. :thud: If it is true I may as well relax or texlax or sumthin. I think I'm about to be depressed :freakout: what is another way to trim my tightly coily hair?

No, no, no..don't let this temporary setback turn you back to the curl fire (relaxers lol) or texterizers. Take this all as a lesson learned. Store it into your memory bank for future reference. This is ONLY temporary.

Our hair journeys are just that..our own. Continue, and push on. You're still learning and growing just like the rest of us. Keep going lady! HHJ!

There are a few threads about the difference between soft protein, mid and hardcore protein.
They say that hardcore is more of a liquid consistency, kind of looking like an oil. Nexxus emergencee is the only one i've used. If you try it be sure to use a deep conditioning moisture treatment as well.

I've trimmed my hair in it's natural state twice since my BC last year. It can be done. Youtube has been a great resource to me. The times that I've trimmed, I stretched my hair first with plaits, brushed out my hair and then trimmed the ends.

Some naturals also cut their hair in twists. I plan to use that method in the future. The following youtube video is one that I found extremely helpful.

Aphogee 2 step treatment is a heavy protein treatment that many naturals on here have had success with when heat damaged hair was concern.

Good luck!

Sounds like heat damage. Don't believe the hype YOU CAN NOT FIX HEAT DAMAGED hair. You can make it LOOK BETTER, but sooner or later you are going to have to cut it off. I know that isn't a popular thing around hair but, it IMHO.

Please dont get a relaxer or texturizer because of that. Since you might have heat damage...you will just be adding to the damage which defeats the purpose. I have heat damage and really there isn't anything you can do. I soooo co-sign ThickHair. I just have to wait for mine to grow out...

I think I'll clarify this weekend - skip the yogurt - try a deep conditioner to see how my hair turns out. I am praying that I have been a little premature and that my coils will 4give me and return to me. I don't know if I can handle a set back.

try honey, mayonasie and coconut oil (w/ or w/o a deep conditioning treatment), sit under the dryer with a shower cap 30-40 mins every 4-6 days and see how it is. i use heat and my curls are good. I dc ALOT and honey is a magican hth!

Every time I mull over flat-ironing, I come across a thread like this or see something on Youtube about heat damage and I immediately kill the idea. What's funny is that I would get my hair pressed on a gas stove while I was growing up w/o heat protectant and I NEVER had heat damage. I don't get it.

Your hair looks a lot better than I thought; I think it just might be a little frizzier than you like it. Totally not worth relaxing or texlaxing. I have heat damage which is severe texture loss; some of my hair is bone straight and I have been natural for 8 years.

This was an informative thread...I have not used heat yet and I don't think I will....

Sorry OP...I hope it all works out for you......Maybe all is not lost just yet....

Edit...Just saw the pics.....it does not look bad to me

This statement is true. I'm relaxed and if I use henna or yogurt when I have NG, the NG loosens up a bit. Amla, fenugreek, and senna (cassia obovato) however, make my NG tighter. The yogurt and henna treatments may very well be what's prolonging the reversion.

IMO: It Doesn't Look Bad at all:look:

IMO: I think after your next wash day, you will be back where you want to be.

IMO: It doesn't look like permanent damage.:nono:

QUOTE]

I ALWAYS cut my hair in twists...I am not looking for that PERMED blunt edged look since my hair is natural!

OP..so sorry about your bad news....I have a small piece of 80-90% heat damaged, perm-straight hair on the left side of my head due to flat-ironing too high...I am just gonna let it grow out. Protein treatment with Joico caused it to coil about 10% (DAMAGE!) so I can twist it........so I feel your pain...I know its not a full head....but I cried a little bit too....Its part of the journey...you live and you learn...
Good luck!

Edited to add: Okay..I checked out your pics...you got lucky! Your coils are more loose now....but be fortunate...you don't want the bone-straight thing happening....I think for some (I think like you and me)...we have to be careful because the more heat passes we do, we may be weakening our coil strands more and more until the damage is irreversible....Take it as a lesson learned!
