4a/b Naturals that use Aveda products for straightening

I am 4a/b all natural and have gotten into the habit of flat ironing my 3 inch hair. I purchased the Aveda anti-humectant and Damage Control. I read that the Smoothing Fluid was a good product to use just before flat ironing in addition to the others. But at 32.00...:perplexed I did not purchase it. My hair really sizzled a lot when I used the damage control.
Maybe I used it incorrectly...Maybe I need the Smoothing Fluid.
Question:
  1. In what order do I use these products and
  2. what can I purchase that is as good as the Smoothing Fluid (if it is needed) without the hefty price tag.

Thanks for your input...

The Damage Control is a heat protectant; and after you spray it on' you have to make sure that your hair is completely dry before you straighten your hair with a flat iron or pressing comb. (If you straighten your hair while it is still damp, you will hear your hair sizzling when the heat hits it; which is very damaging to your hair!) I use Aveda smoothing fluid when I press my natural hair; but a light pressing creme will do the job also. Dudley's is a good one as long as you are not heavy-handed when applying it to your hair. There are a lot of affordable, decent pressing cremes on the market; but none of them can protect your hair from the heat if you are straightening your hair while it is still damp from the Damage Control product.
1. I apply Damage Control while detangling my hair.
2. I blow dry my hair.
3. Right before I press each section of my hair, I apply a tiny dab of Aveda Smoothing Fluid to my hair, then I press it straight.
