These were past set-backs...

Relaxer over/underprocessing-
Someone relaxed my hair when I was younger & didnt wash it out properly...no need to say what happened :ohwell:

Dyes-
Permanent ovr permanent

Chronic dryness/improper moisturization-
I nvr wanted to use anything in my hair besides hair polish because it would make it "heavy"

Rough manipulation

Other ( Please specify)- Not caring for my hair under weaves.

& then I realized i wont have hair left if I keep that up. Googled & found LHCF lol

You tell me! If you've ever had a major/noticable setback, what has it been?
ETA: I forgot HEAT! Ah well, that was the case for me previously, with dying, scissors and improper moisturization...

My major set back was 'me' going nuts using Bigen - Oriental Black hair dye like there was no tomorrow. I was using this stuff every 3-4 weeks because I was hooked on the depth of the black. I had my hairdresser chop all of my hair off to .5-1 inch all over in 7/2008. I've had it cut 4 times since then, the latest cut on Saturday.

I am back on the growing trail & healthy trail now!

A sewin weave gone wrong. I think it was sewed in/braided too tight and I may have washed it too often causing tangles. dont know but I had about 2-3 inches of breakage from the back middle braid.

The cause of my set back was:

Heat
Over processing
lack of moisturizing
Ponytails everyday

Wow! It's amazing I have any hair left.

I have a patch in the crown that is shorter than the rest of my hair. But I find that the texture is different; meaning that it is more wiry, fragile, thinner, less curl definition than the rest of my hair. And therefore it requires more moisture and a gentle hand. I am got the moisturizing part down, but I notice that I am having a little trouble being gentle. The hair doesn't just break on it's own, my roughness is a contributing factor. So I always have to be cognizant of this when handling my hair.
Hopefully I can be more gentle and this patch will catch up and stop breaking.

I haven't had any set backs. But I notice that a lot of people's setbacks come from not knowing what they're putting on their heads and why. Also, it seems to me that people use a product or technique because someone raved about it without asessing whether it will be good for their particular head and that leads to some major problems.

Msa, just like you I haven't suffered any major setback because I am for SURE a conservative hairvestor = I take NO risk.
A boring hair life, but with high guaranteed rewards. Where else can you take no risk and still get better returns than those who take high risk?

Before i discovered hair boards, i was doing very well untill i stopped deep conditioning, because i thought it wasn't doing anything and was a waste of time and money. I over-used heat and cut my hair like every 2 months.

I had a stylist (before I went back to my old trusted one), who applied relaxer from root to tip. I tried another, who "trimmed" my hair like he was blind, with it being up to 3" shorter underneath.

Tigi Bed Head Ego Boost...totally destroyed my ends, ended up having to cut a few inches.
Sebastian Cellophanes Colourshines, Black Orchid...made my hair super dry, and I had to grow the color out and cut my hair.

ETA: I've had my hair over processed before as well. Went from bsl to a chin length in about a week.

My passed set back came from jumping on bandwagons and not knowing how to correct it.

My new setback... which is not really a setback comes from heat. My hair is getting longer and I to want floss by wearing it down. This time I know how to correct and what it respond to. It appears to be the same length in progress pic.:nono:

Time to put up I got a APL goal by Dec 09.

My worse setback came after reaching BSL for the first time. I stopped everything I did to get there and went back to just letting my stylist worry about my hair. Big mistake! No one can care for your hair well enough to undo daily heat, lack of moisturizing and poor diet.

In brief my worse setback came from being to cocky and thinking I had arrived! Well now that I have had to cut it all back to above APL to get rid of dead ends, you bet I will keep my attitude in check next time I reach my goal.

Two months ago I Was mid back lenght then all of my bleached damaged hair broke off two inches above bra strap length:wallbash: I've gained an inch in lenght so far. I have about two i nches of bleached hair left and I just dyed my hair last summer

Doing too much or too little to your hair. Extremes don't work to produce consistantly good results. IOW, none of the above.

You need a minimum amount of care to have your hair in decent shape....it's not gonna just happen doing nothing or next to nothing. If that were the case, more people would have hair in better condition.

Doing too much (which is FAR more common around these parts) is just as bad. Too much product and too many at one time is a recipe for disaster. Most of the problems on this site have to do w/ this specifically...using to much, too often, and too many things.

Since I've started my HHJ I haven't had any setbacks *knocks on wood*. I can't even count the stuff that happened before I got here because I didn't care.

I think setbacks can happen due to denial. Rather than attempting to problem solve and figure out what to do you just let it get worse. Like it's gonna go away on its own. Of course it just intensifies and gets worse this way.

most DEFFFF dry hair!
I recently trimmed what I believe was about 2-3 inches of hair due to this.
I FINALLY think I found the cure to my dry hair though. =)

But my hair LUCKILY (thank you God) grows very fast.
