Dedicated to the "big braid"

I would love to learn how to braid. It would help me with my transition. I think I will look into purchasing a manaquein (sp?) head. I think it would help me with my twists too :yep:.

OP, great thread!!! Thanks also for the beautiful pics. I also love big braids, and a lone braid is one of my favorite protective styles, especially in winter.

I did my version of AKeys' Style!

Oh oh oh. Let me go find my pic.

Okay, so I really did this just messing around. I took it right down afterwards. But I really do want to start wearing one as a protective style. I just need some more practice. That was my first time doing one.

Your hair looks very healthy, too.

Oh, this is gorgeous, Ms_Twana! It's so thick and beautiful.

i am sooo envious of these long beautiful braids. I can't wait until my hair is that long....*sigh*

I love the big braid as well. I wish I could find someone that rocks them that has thick, natural hair. I don't want to have to blow my hair out to do it :(

I have thick natural hair. You don't have to blow your hair out. You can set it in bantu knots to stretch it out, then go from there. That's what I usually do.

My favorite style is 2 large french braids or cornrows. I'm waiting for my hair to be long enough that the braids stretch down my back. Here are my pics from last year this time. I did use a blow dryer, but as you can see, it didn't make my hair very straight. I know this is suppose to be about twists, but I'm bad at uploading pics so I don't think I have any braid ones, but it's similar.

Twisted the next day...

I have my hair drying in bantus now. I might try one of the styles in this thread

Dang! That looks great for your first time! You should have seen my first time - FAIL!

French braiding thick natural curly hair aint easy. I've tried a few times since the OP made this thread and I've come to the conclusion that my hair has to be straight or nearly straight in order to achieve some of these big braided hairstyles. I wont use heat instead I will ponytail rollerset sometime in the future, it definitely will be easier. *sighs*

There's a balance however. I have trouble braiding my hair when its flat ironed because it's too slick.

Stop reading my mind! That's going to be my style. MINE! I claim all the french braids and goddess braids...go get another style!!!!!!!!:weird:

This is a great thread. Here is my contribution. When I saw this style on Gossip Girl, it gave me even more of a resolve to reach MBL so that I can duplicate this look:

I can't believe the day has come when these styles are hot. I remember being mad as hell when my aunt or my mom sent me to school like this when I was in prep/ elementary school.

lol lol Me too!

It's simple but I LOVE it!!

Last time I went out to the club I didn't have time to do my hair so I wore it like this :yep:

Have you tried braiding yor hair while wet? My tools include, Denman, Aloe Vera Gel, Castor Oil, and AO White Camelia. The AO keeps the hair moist and the wetness keeps the hair smooth, then your hair will dry thick.

I wore a single french braid (or shall I say a french twist) a couple times during the summer and got compliments on it.

I'm gonna experiment more this month.

Here's my french braid.

I learned a new trick to keep it from being "bulky" at the top from a youtube link (I'll look for it)....I couldn't find the one I learned from but it's like the one I found except you braid the top two times before you start adding in more hair.

You basically grasp the front and crown of your hair and separate it into three parts. Next you start a braid like you were going to just braid that top part and leave the rest hanging free. Do two braids and then start gathering smallish sections fron the sides and middle as you go down the crown of your haed towards your nape. The YT video basically shows the hand placements and how to gather from the sides: http://isaetno.free.fr/ or if I didn't do this right (which is most likely the case) type in "how to do your own french braid" and look for "isaetno". Though it's foreign clip, she doesn't talk, but merely shows you what to do.

I like all the styles in this thread. I'm wondering how did you accomplish this?

First I prep my own hair by heavily mositurizing it and sealing with vatika oil.I use tyokolon body wave braiding hair it cost $3.99 for one pack. I used half the hair to create the braid by adding it in. Plus, I used a little ecosyler gel on the edges and nape. Finish off with a light hair spray so it will last a few days.

These are absolutely lovely! I can french braid my own hair, but since it's so short I don't have much hanging in the back when I'm done. I can't wait to get some length so I can rock some of these styles.
