Natural (or highly textured) Type 4's... what melts your tangles away?

Water!!!

For real! I install tiny twists in my hair and wear for months on end, with washing and cowashing in between. When it comes to take down, I get scared and in my mind I think I'm going to need some magic detangler, but that's not the case, I just mist with water and the tangles literally melt. My hair is the type that looks like it'll lock easily

To give you an idea of what I mean, here's a pic (twist out from tiny twists that was detangled using water and fingers only):

That's really pretty! :)

Water makes my hair more tangly though, lol. I wish I could make my hair look so nice just with water.

Mixing evoo in conditioner, using aubrey organics conditioners, or using Taliah Waajid Protective Bodifier Mist.

The following three steps:

Abba Color Protect (deep conditioner), Abba Pure Moisture (conditioner) and Redken Fresh curls curl refining detangler. They all help soften my hair immensely and makes detangling less of a challenge for me.

Silk Elements Olive Treatment, Pantene Relaxed & Natural mask, or Pantene Time Renewal mask (just 1, I don't mix conditioners) in a plastic cap with heat.

A Tresemme conditioner without heat - Anti-Breakage, Smooth & Silky, Moisture Rich, or Thermal Recovery.

Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1 as a leave-in.

Not a type 4 but I'm sure it still will help 4's with detangling

But ORS Replenishing is a very good major slip giving/detangler

I use it just for that

Lots of conditioner. Any type really but I love V05 and Pantene (when I don't mind some cones) and because it is so cheap I can use as much as I like. I detangle in the shower while cowashing and I only get one or two uses out of each bottle! But it only takes me a few minutes to detangle my wholw head.

Henna has also helped make detangling easier. Every time I rinse me henna out I am amazed at how the tangles just fall out. Henna has made my hair less velcro-ey and makes all my products work better.

Are you pre-pooing? I find that also really helps with detangling.

Yes to Carrots!!!

I know I'm not a type 4 *runs out of thread*

:lachen:
haha Poka

I just tried this yesterday

and your raves were right on girl

I'm listening to everything you say now:grin:

this was good! I will probably now use both the ORS and yes to carrots

only this one I got to leave in.........love it!

This is why you can't just put water or use a mist with water and then that's it. Water needs a to hold in the moisture. Hair will just be soaked up by the water.

Best,
Almond Eyes

I stopped hennaing months ago when I found my first gray (turned it orange) I probably have an inch or two of henna ends still.

I pre poo with coconut oil. :yep:

Yes to Carrots!!!

Type 3's are welcome if you think you can help, of course :bighug: I love you all type 3's! (or 2's or whoever else is out there) lol

I was primarily wondering what people with similar texture use though. My hair shrivels to one inch and behaves like velcro on the ends everytime I wet it, not something I imagine happens to curly hair :perplexed

but yeah, I do value EVERYONE'S opinion. :) I've learned so much from all hairtypes here. Was just looking for semi-specialized advice.

It's so interesting that you'd say that. The ingredients remind me of Kiyafizzle :yep:

Spring Water and (Dead) Sea Water , Silt (Dead Sea Mud) , Magnesium Chloride , Matricaria Recutita (Chamomile) Extract , Cetrimonium Chloride , Jojoba Oil , Olive Oil , Calendula officinalis Oil , Almond Oil , Carrot Seed Oil , Carrot Juice , Organic Extracts of: Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Melon, Orange & Honey , Fragrance , Dimethicone , Wheat Germ Oil , Imidazolidinyl Urea

There is probably salt in the silt too...
Very interesting...

The Tresemme Moisture Rich has been an absolutely wonderful find for me too - right out the bottle but even better a little diluted. It's great as a leave-in too (but not cone-free).

Algae extract works wonders on tangles.

Komaza's Moisture Spray and their Leave-in Conditioner from the Califia line (for type 4 hair) contain a lot of algae, and they're very slippery. I've been taking down my very tiny individual braids with the Moisture Spray, and the knots just melt away.

Knot Today also works well for detangling.

(These are both cone-free)

Aussie Moist
Suave Tropical Coconut

and the winner by a long shot - Amla Oil. I prepoo with it. I'll mist my hair with water in sections, then apply the oil to my scalp and work it through my hair. After it's sat for a min it makes my hair really soft and fluffy - kind of reminds me of hair grease but it rinses clean and I can use it to detangle outside of the shower w/o making a huge mess. :yep:

Oh! I don't know how you feel about commercial products - but I used to DC with Silk Elements Moisturizing Treatment under a heat cap and the tangles would melt RIGHT out. I was relaxed/texlaxed then though...I haven't tried it since going natural.

:grin:Great Iris!!!! It really does melt tangles away!

I just tried their mud mask today and :lick::lick::lick:. Great stuff. My hair melted to butter.

I'm not natural yet (10.5 months post) but Giovanni Direct Leave In is a great detangler for me :yep: I already know it's a product I'll stick to as a natural.

I have been reading a lot about Giovanni products...where can I get these products? Do i have to go to Ulta or something?

Firstly Neith, I just have to tell you that your hair is so beautiful. :yep:

There are two detanglers that have been wonderful for me:
1. Knot Today (in fact, I just bought some yesterday), but as good as it is, it pales in comparison to...
2. THE VERY BEST ONE I'VE EVER USED IN MY LIFE (second to the QB's gone-but-not-forgotten Olive Detangler) - Alba Botanicals Detangler. I'm talking about powerful detangling and phenomenal curl definition! :yep::yep:

You know what? I noticed that both of these contain marshmallow root. I really think that plays a big difference. Other excellent detangling conditioners that I've used (namely, Jessicurl Too Shea and Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment) also contain marshmallow root. I hope this helps! :yep:

Thank you! :hug2:

Doesn't thank kinky curly stuff everyone loves so much have marshmallow too? *goes to research marshmallow root* :D

Thanks for posting this link! Looks like she gives very helpful tips :yep:

This is such a helpful thread, I'm taking notes.
Though I have a satisfactory regimen I still keep an eye out for products with glowing reviews - I don't rush out to buy but figure out if there is a place for it in my reggie, tweaked or otherwise. Co-sign with adding castor oil to conditioner or using it on it's own.
I find that adding oils to my dry hair helps immensely, except coconut oil. It makes my hair brittle.
Currently I use Ojon restorative treatment as a pre-poo overnight and it softens and detangles really well. I believe the main ingredient is palm kernel oil.
BTW: Thats a weave in my siggie pic. ;-) Need to change it!

I tried that once, but was turned off by the smell. :nono: I might try it again, though. :yep: I'm like you - I like my regimen and I have pretty solid staple products, but I love tweaking it for maximum effect. :yep:
