will the braids harm my hair and should I use human hair for them?

haha!! I was going to start a thread just like this! I wouldn't get human hair. but that's just me. I plan to use some kanekalon braiding hair, which is very reasonably priced.

As for it damaging your hair, it's all in how you take care of it. First when getting it done make sure that your edges aren't braided too tight. You want to still have edges when you take them down. Also just because your hair is braided/twisted doesn't mean it still doesn't need to be taken care of. You still need to cleanse, condition, and moisturize like you normally would.

I hope you don't mind if I piggyback on your thread OP... :look:

I was going to be getting some twists similar to the pic that OP posted, I plan to keep them in for a 4-6 weeks at a time. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to do an Aphogee 2 step protein treatment before I put the braids in and between each new install? Or would it be better to step up on my DC'ing?

Also, the few times I have had twists or braids before I would always have problems with the ones in front staying in :perplexed Within the first week of having them installed several will fall out. What am I doing wrong?

I plan on having my hair in braids from Oct 22 till probably end of Jan... I use kankelon hair.. and I really dont have any harm done to my hair when I get them done...I generally keep the length moisturized and clean my scalp with a cloth and water... maybe wash with some clarifying poo to keep build up to a min.... other then that..everything is everything... I would say your hair should be fine.. as long as u take care of it

Just be careful not to attempt tight pony tails and styles that bring stress to your edges! I had them about a year ago and my edges suffered but the rest of my hair flourished!

I showed this hair style to hubby and he said I would look nice with my hair done like this. So since he'll be paying for I'm gonna to get this style for my winter protective styling.

Human Hair is safer when wearing braids, being as though very few strands of Your hair are used per individual braid or twist, and because synthetic hair is 20 times stronger than human hair, when pulled tight because its plasticy(not a word, I know) but in any case, essentially it will act as a razor, and You will lose a lot of hair, figured that one out through trial and error, been there done that, invest in human hair, better safe than sorry.

Really? I've done the crown and glory for years in the past and never heard of this never mind experienced it (thank God). I don't doubt you're telling the truth, it's just news to me.

I had that exact same hair style and I loved it. I had kanekalon. Just make sure your edges aren't too tight and don't pull it into a tight ponytail. Basically I'm just repeating everything everyone else said :)

Senegalese Twists are one of my all time favorite protective styles hands down.

One of my favorite things about it is the cheap kanekalon hair works wonderfully with it, whereas if you got braids you have to use pricey human hair. Because they're twists theres not much if any stress to your hair, I don't experience breakage and I retain nicely. When I do this style on myself I'm always sure to use less hair around my hair line to prevent damage and if I wear it up (rare) I do so loosely.

I find the kanekalon hair to be very bouncy and light. This style was key to my transition, I was thinking of doing it again pretty soon myself. The takedown is a breeze. One of my favorite things about this style is the way I get to play with new colors, its the best.

Yea, some people are safer with Synthetic hair then others, I guess I'm with the others, of course I am relaxed too, so that didn't help, anyway, if You have some Synthetic on hand, take a strand or two and pull it tight, it actually stretches very far before popping, but right before it does, it becomes really sharp, like if You were to swipe it across Your skin it would slice. Just food for thought! They do make synthetic hair a lot better then they used to, it's alot closer to human then it was, also if Your Natural your hair is a lot stronger, that's a Good thing.
